Why are you assuming the gun-toter was right wing?

The rhetoric of 'left wing = good, right wing = bad' that the media wants you to believe was put to bed years ago.

100% some left-wing crazy did this!

The shooter was a registered republican.

Sorry I can't help. I've looked back over my posts and can't see any direct responses to you.

Don't worry, the question has been answered elsewhere on the thread. I wanted an explanation of the Agatha Christie reference. I've never heard of the book and didn'y know the plot so I didn't understand the reference. I thought it was some weird sort of code!

Who had also made a donation to the Democrats. So let's just wait and see, shall we?

It's become clear to me ever since the Brexit referendum that a good proportion of 'educated' people, mainly on the left, think that democracy is only for the likes of them and not for those they consider too stupid to use the privilege wisely.

Seriously. If Trump hadn't spent his entire political career; trying to undermine democracy, defend the convicted insurrectionists he's going to pardon, stacking the Supreme Court with bent judges, attacking the judiciary, his political opponents and threatening them with jail etc. Then you'd have half a badly thought out argument.

Besides, joking about a violent attack on an opponent is what Trump and his Magganauts would want us to do.

"Trump said he would “stand up to crazy Nancy Pelosi“ if reelected president, asking a crowd of supporters, “How’s her husband doing by the way?” and saying a “wall around her house” didn’t do a “good job” of protecting her 82-year-old husband from an intruder who fractured his skull with a hammer during a break-in last year—prompting laughter from the crowd.

You wouldn't be saying that if he had donated $15 to the republicans when he was 17 and was now a registered Democrat.

Yes the registered republican isn’t a certain indication, and money also donated to democrats

“Crucible · Yesterday 23:49

What a load of shite.”

One person was killed and two more spectators injured.
Perhaps you should do a little investigating before you respond with your “shite”.

The shooter was a registered republican.

A few years ago during the Corbyn years my father , a conservative voter, joined the Labour Party to vote for him as leader, he thought it would make them unelectable. A lot of other people thought it was an hilarious jape.

It’s not hard to imagine that someone who wanted to shoot a republican would join the party to get campaign info and get into the rallies

TwigletsAndRadishes · 14/07/2024 11:54

How do you know what I would or wouldn't have said? He's only 20 years old and so far, in the space of a few hours he's been labelled as both a democrat and a republican. As I said, let's not jump to conclusions, but let the police do their job and then we will know.

If he is a Republican then he hasn't done a very good job of covering his tracks if he wanted to pose as a Democrat, has he? It's possible he registered as a Republican to get insider info on the rally, as someone else said.

Certainly in terms of motive it seems more likely that he's a Trump hater than, as some have theorised, someone who wanted to martyr Trump and martyr himself, or deliberately cause a near miss with the aim of boosting support for Trump. That seems a stretch to say the least, but anything is possible I suppose.

RationalityIsHard · 14/07/2024 11:57

SunnieShine · 14/07/2024 11:50

Yes, he has.

I'm not so sure. This has certainly shown the direction of travel when Trump is involved in the Presidential race and I'm fairly sure that there will be plenty of people who look it and now realise that it will be even worse if he is elected.

It may well galvanise undecideds to vote against him rather than for.

Especially as this near miss will no doubt make him even more convinced of his infallibility and sense of destiny.

There are also different types of Republicans. Not all of them admire Trump; some factions trend further to the centre.

wowzw · 14/07/2024 10:17

this is where conspiracy theories are forming. Questioning why the secret service waited for him to shoot before they shot at him. How he was able to climb a building which overlooks the rally etc..

I know but I am not a conspiracy theorist, I am just stating what happened. They interviewed eye witnesses who saw the sniper and repeatedly alerted security but nothing happened. I don't believe it was staged or that security was in on it. I am just questioning the poor level of security and why they didn't check it out

Hatfullofwillow · 14/07/2024 12:06

Ladyslip · 14/07/2024 10:45

Yeah, only the right sort of people deserve to live, right? I believe there was an entire movement about that in the 1900s. Unfortunately, it fell out of favour after WW2 for some reason. You should look it up, seems to align with your type of thinking. It began with E and rhymed with ‘bubenics’.

Er, it's Farage that believes only the right sort of people should have rights. His subscribers don't even have the right to vote for their leader.

If you're supporting a bloke who agitated for violence against certain groups, or for people to be left to drown in the channel, then if that's what seals your fate, it's going to temper my sympathy. That's not eugenics (a belief in which half of our last government subscribes to)

The comments on this thread show how batshit crazy the ‘progressives’ are. The liberal left are genuinely threatening, violent and intolerant. Wonder how they square this with their fake morality.

Really? Did the 'liberal left' break into Capitol Hill and initiate an insurrection?

JustAVeryWeirdWoman · 14/07/2024 12:17

This has now settled the election without a doubt. Even if the Democrats see sense and replace Biden as a candidate, Trump will still win because he's just become a martyr to his supporters (and likely also to some people who were sitting on the fence).

I fear that this incident will be remembered over the years as a defining one, like the Franz Josef assassination before WWI. Many dictators and dictator wannabes had "close calls" (some of them accidental) that could've changed the course of history. Let's also not forget the fatalities that did happen, 1 person killed and 2 seriously injured. It's an awful event all around.

I'm fine thanks. I've never called for the overthrowing of a democratic election by any means. I haven't attacked anyone, set fire to any hostels, shot up a synagogue, nail bombed a gay pub, killed 77 people at a summer camp, killed 9 people in a church in Charleston etc. I just made a joke about a convicted felon, a rapist, fraudster, racist and danger to the free world.

Meanwhile a second shooter has been arrested trying to shoot Trump's heart. In Mar-a-lago, where it's kept in a lead lined box in a basement along with several boxes of classified files.
