What is so weird is how crap the security was.

This is what I can’t I understand.
They had all these secret agents with their dark glasses and state paratroopers and someone actually managed to shoot at Donald Trump
One would have thought that security would be top notch particularly since Trump is such a divisive figure

I think that may be where the conspiracy theories have come from that it was a a staged event - that and Trumps’ behaviour after he was hit, fist bumping and waving to the crowd as they were trying to get him into the car. One bystander said he reported seeing the shooter crawling on a barn roof to one of the security detail but they didn’t seem interested.

I know!!!!He said he could see him bear crawling and was pointing him out to secret service. There would be better security in our non gun toting land for an ex PM. His guards there looked sooo amateur.

I’m not sure it has done him any good to be honest. It must be shaking the confidence the average American has in national security if that is the best they are supposed to have.

I wouldn't jump to conclusions right now. Humans can be, and are incompetent. They cut corners, cut costs, and people would often rather believe in a conspiracy than believe that.

I'm not taking his first bump to mean anything either. He was sheltering on the ground for a little while before that if you watch the full clip, and people behave in different ways when they're in shock. Also, not everybody even feels the same way when it comes to things like that - some people are able to remain much calmer than the average person under great stress.

Speaking as a non-Trump supporter here who thinks both of the candidates are highly embarrassing for the U.S

The security for Eurovision Song Contest was even better than this. Weird.

You are part of the problem.

Some people like to listen to multiple perspectives before they make up their mind about something. It's a far more mature way of forming opinions than simply choosing which colour rosette you prefer.

I consume media with both a right and left wing bias in the hope of reaching an informed opinion.

Of course you do. It’s funny how people who write posts like this are always so balanced and impartial and need to convince others that listening to fascists makes you unbiased.

On another point, I think Trump has gone beyond the point where people merely disagree with his policies. A lot of commentary at the moment is focussed on how dangerous it will be for the whole world when (not if) he pulls US support for Ukraine.

The US is in the biggest mess ever. I can only hope something happens to restore rationality and safety.

wateringcanface · 14/07/2024 11:06

Startingagainandagain · 14/07/2024 09:13

I think the shooter achieved the exact opposite of what he wished to do...

Trump is vile, dangerous and he will be a disaster again for America and the world as president but this has massively increased his chances of winning.

Because him standing back up after being shot, raising his fist and shouting 'fight!' is perfect PR for him. That pic with the flag behind him is what the media dream of and he will be able to spin the narrative of the establishment trying to silence him.

Especially if Biden does not do the right thing by standing aside for a more inspiring candidate to take over for the Democrats then Trump will win.

Scary times.

Or perhaps the shooter got exactly what he wanted. He was reportedly a republican, potentially wanted to martyr trump, bring on civil war and die for the cause. Really not a far fetched concept with the amount of die hard right wingers in America who say they'd die for the cause.

MasterShardlake · 14/07/2024 11:07

Just seen the BBC video of the immediate aftermath of the shooting, Trump says he has to put his shoes on.

I need to know why he'd taken them off. No doubt someone will find a conspiracy theory that helps to explain this.

Hatfullofwillow · 14/07/2024 11:08

Hateam · 14/07/2024 10:36

And all the people who would support his assassination.

Not necessarily. I'd personally much rather Trump was subject to justice served by the courts. However Trump has stacked the supreme courts with acolytes, sought to undermine & demonise the judiciary since his candidacy & seen the Supreme Court give him immunity from prosecution for crimes committed, or to be committed, as part of his "official" duties.

They might see democracy in the US as failing to support the values it purports to espouse and think killing Trump is the last hope to avoid the US undermining Western liberal democracy.

Some might also agree with Trump that rapists should get the death penalty (although I think he was just referring to 5 black men, later found to be innocent) and think it's not much of a loss in the scheme of things in a country where 1 in 315 deaths are from assault by a gun.

"Don't listen to other points of view, they are obviously wrong and you're a bad person for doing so."

Yeah, Farage isn't the fascist here.

Mycatsmudge · 14/07/2024 09:44

For the posters on here who have condoned the attempted assassination of Trump do you really believe it’s ok to just kill people you don’t agree with? I thought in a democracy we were better than that🤷🏻‍♀️

It's become clear to me ever since the Brexit referendum that a good proportion of 'educated' people, mainly on the left, think that democracy is only for the likes of them and not for those they consider too stupid to use the privilege wisely.

nomoretoriesforme · 14/07/2024 11:11

@wateringcanface The shooter made donations to democrats in the past as reported by CNN

Both Peril at End House and A Murder is Announced

I believe there is a faked bullet through a hat in Peril at End House.

Tracker1234 · 14/07/2024 11:13

Emman - are you really writing this garbage. Surely we all need to listen to others and then decide. Not believe what you do.

You really are part of the issue as others have said.

Crucible · 13/07/2024 23:49

If someone shot his ear then someone behind him would have been seriously injured or killed by the bullet
What a load of shite.

But they were, were they not? One killed and at least two more injured?

The leave voters got what they wanted. Higher food prices, no change in immigration (according to them) and er, blue passports.

tobee · 14/07/2024 11:14

The poster wasn’t advocating listening to fascists. They were advocating listening to all sides in order to reach a balanced view, rather than dismissing people by reputation without understanding what they’re saying and why they hold that opinion. Throughout history there have been people who were ridiculed or reviled, but ultimately proved right. Not saying Farage is necessarily in this category but not everyone will hold the opinion that he’s a fascist. I really dislike Jacob Rees Mogg, but l’ll admit that when l saw him on Newsnight last week l agreed with some of what he said. Doesn’t make me a Tory any more than it makes those who agree with Farage on certain points a fascist.

In Peril At End House by Agatha Christie a woman sets off a fake gunshot and nicks the top of her ear with a pair of scissors for maximum blood/drama/distraction. Just sayin.

And did this story also include murdering another person and seriously injuring two others at the same time?

Growsomeballswoman · 14/07/2024 11:16

@violetsoup That is a sick thing to say.

Was he wearing loafers? Maybe they came off when the Secret Service pulled him to the ground?

He’s dead isn’t he ? As is an innocent bystander so you might want to rethink this post. Cue deletion!!

Dymaxion · 14/07/2024 11:17

We currently have no idea and may never know the real motivation of the shooter.

What really concerns me is the possibility of copycat attacks, all those saying they wish the shooter had been successful, would you be OK if another lone shooter decided to take a pot shot at any other politician ? Everybody on both sides needs to condemn violence, and yes, that includes Trump.

AInightingale · 14/07/2024 11:17

plainjayne8282 · 14/07/2024 11:13

You can see a guy to the right of Trump (left on footage) bending down over someone and trying to assist them - was this one of the people who was fatally injured or critically injured?
