Despite a shocking number of posts wishing DT had been killed I'm relieved to see so many posters are horrified by the idea of political assassinations.

It doesn't matter what you think of Trump we can't condone the murder of people we politically disagree with.

I agree. Apart from the fact that murdering anyone in cold blood is heinous, it also doesn’t help your cause (whichever side you support). This will just create more vitriol and more sympathy and support for Trump. The risks will also put off decent people from standing.

Whilst I wouldn’t be sad if Trump died from an accident or natural causes (and there are few people I would say that about) attempted murder is never ok.

Outwiththenorm · 14/07/2024 10:00

In Peril At End House by Agatha Christie a woman sets off a fake gunshot and nicks the top of her ear with a pair of scissors for maximum blood/drama/distraction. Just sayin.

LordPercyPercy · 14/07/2024 10:01

Again, why? Why would someone who is voting for Democratic policies change their mind, why would an attempted assassination reframe Trump’s policies as something to vote for?

It's not that, it's that it will increase voter turnout and influence swing voters. Clearly commited Democrats are too busy making comments about how it's a pity the shooter didn't manage to kill Trump.

Buffypaws · 14/07/2024 10:01

I would have hoped mumsnet was more civilised than this.

Childrenofthestones · 14/07/2024 10:02

Where the fuck are the mods? If this shit was getting posted after an assassination attempt on Biden, let alone Obama....

I don't like Donald Trump but that's very harsh. 😮

And the actual dead people?

Does the woman also kill a member of the crowd around her, and injure more? “Just sayin”. Morons abound on this thread.

I thought that was in A Murder is Announced?

I know that book but can't see how this could possibly be the same.

To be fair if it had been Biden, trump and his supporters would have definitely suggested it was a hoax. Without a shadow of doubt that's what they'd have been saying. They claim most incidents are a hoax, eso if they involve guns killing innocent or people getting hurt.

I'm not saying it's a hoax btw, just responding to what I believe trump supporters would be spouting right now had Biden been the victim of the attempt.

Statements without proof will only further stir up strong emotions. Nothing good will come out of it.

So an attempted assassination would influence a swing voter not the policies the parties are offering, it is about the person?

Ladyslip · 14/07/2024 10:06

JuliesName · 14/07/2024 01:15

Well, no, I'm not advocating someone goes out there and does it, and I'm obviously not the one who DID.

But I'm also not going to pretend to be upset or 'praying for Trump' or any other disingenuous shit. My first thought when seeing a message he was shot was relief - that's how many women who currently live in the US feel, especially those of us with pasts his followers disagree with.

This isn't 'just political disagreement' - it's the lives of millions of people that he threatens every day.

I don't she'd a tear for rapists and strongly believe the world would be a better place if they were all dead.

Talk about missing the point. This isn’t about Trump.

It’s about caring about democracy. We don’t live in a functioning democracy if political candidates are assassinated. We don’t have a democratic culture if citizens don’t care about or condone or celebrate political candidates being assassinated.

Pipsquiggle · 14/07/2024 10:06

God it's just awful isn't it.

I really REALLY don't like Trump but would never want him or any other democratically elected leader (or standing for election) to be assassinated.

This will probably cement his vote and victory unfortunately.

I wish him and Biden would both just retire and enjoy the rest of their lives

There will be some voters who are on the fringe and I think it would have made them double down and vote Republican. Biden is clearly not a well man and his health is clearly getting worse over time. In my opinion he’s not fit to govern and needs to step aside for someone else. It’s probably contributed towards Trumps lead in the polls.

Also, a murder is announced. Though how to you explain the dead and critically injured?

TheRozzers · 14/07/2024 10:07

Any theories on why he didn't have his shoes on?

DP thinks the secret service took them off after he was shot to stop him running off

Also, I’m not American but why would a ‘committed democrat’ be aligned with the extreme idea of eliminating your political opponents?

Yes, just what I thought. Staged as hell.

Are people still peddling this nonsense

Did you miss the death of a bystander

You should add "full of hate and vitriol " to your name.

Tracker1234 · 14/07/2024 10:10

To be people who say it was staged. Shame on you. One person died and one nearly did. If you don’t like him don’t vote for him but some people think this is OK because the target is someone whose beliefs they don’t share.

Windymoore · 14/07/2024 10:12

Some many on this thread: no caveats needed, what I may or may not think about Trump, Biden, Starmer,Farage or anyone doesn't matter: Violence against politicians,or ANYONE stating a political opinion, fir stating a political position, IS WRONG,and will kill democracy. It's that bloody simple. And we're too far down this path not to recognise it

Scary

Can't believe they missed, what a shame

Don't worry, they managed to kill an innocent bystander.

You’ve probably made that poster feel a bit better that at least one Trump supporter has been murdered and their family of Trump supporters are living with the pain of loss and grief.

They probably like to post #bekind a lot too.
