As an interesting mind game though you have a time machine and can get to the cradle carrying a baby Adolf Hitler - what do you do ? There is a line and Trump is on the right side of it. Putin I'm not so sure.

Warn people? Tell his parents to get him psychiatric help? Make sure the world wasn't caught unawares?

As an actual human being, there is no way I would or could kill a baby. Never.

Hardly an interesting mind game, more like 'find the fascist'.

TheFirmBiscuit · 14/07/2024 07:32

Calliecarpa · 14/07/2024 07:27

Stephen Fry once wrote a novel (titled Making History, IIRC) with that exact scenario. Someone with a time machine made Hitler's father sterile, so that Hitler was never born. When they woke up in the present day, they'd made everything far worse, because Germany ended up winning the second world war (Hitler didn't found the Nazi party, so in the novel, in the world where he didn't exist, someone else became their leader and was more competent in military matters).

And Dr Who rules are you are not allowed to alter history in any meaningful way - Superman though and the rest don't follow such rules ! Being President of the USA though is probably the most danggerous job in the world - because guns.

The same in UK where they have rampant knife crime but they aren't banning knives....

It's illegal to carry a knife in the UK "without reasonable excuse".

The relevant charge is being in possession of an offensive weapon, and there are around 20k prosecutions for carrying a knife or similar every year.

WildLemur · 14/07/2024 07:33

Calliecarpa · 14/07/2024 07:10

I feel the same. People are dead and seriously injured, and on MN a group of six-year-olds are giggling about Donald Duck. FFS.

I loathe Donald Trump, but we absolutely should not be normalising the (attempted or otherwise) assassination of politicians we disagree with.

Yes, this is the crux of it.

I loathe and fear Trump but violence against politicians is extremely dangerous. It's a very dark day.

I was going to say something similar. Not ok to murder politicians, absolutely agree. The nearest we've had here in the UK was the murser of Jo Cox and David Amiss, which was awful and rightly, and roundly, condemned.

Where do we stand on Putin? Or Kim Jong Un? At what point does a politician turn into a political despot, a dictator, someone so dangerous that they become a legitimate target?

Oh please, don't be so naive! Any victims of this would be collateral damage in the eyes of the ones who orchestrated this shooting. "for a good cause". Do you honestly, truly believe Trumpists care less about one death, when they can solidify his chances and make him look like a hero? Truly? You were born in the last shower! These gun nuts see school kids as collateral damage. Shooting rampages in shopping malls or schools, STILL they won't ban guns. It's all collateral damage to them when the ends justify the means. I can't believe you are this naive.

American gun law is a completely different issue from conspiracy theories about the event this thread is on. I don’t think you will find a single European able to fathom why gun controls are such a contentious issue in the US. That’s irrelevant to my comment that conspiracy theories are unhelpful.

The FBI says it was a real assassination attempt. I doubt very much that the 20 year old with the gun was a sufficiently skilled marksman to clip Trump’s earlobe and not kill him, especially as he also missed completely and killed someone in the crowd. Occam’s razor is helpful here. There is really no point in dwelling on conspiracy theories that have been made up on the hop in the immediate aftermath of an event by keyboard worriers. If you are American and don’t want Trump to win the election, then vote for someone else. If that’s not enough, volunteer to do some campaigning for the person you want to win. That is the sum of your say in the matter, because the whole point of a democracy is that no one gets more than one vote, however morally superior they think they are.

Well I imagine he possibly was asleep when it happened - seeing as it's nighttime!

But he'll be told as and when is necessary to be told.

I'm not sure of what intention or meaning your comment had?

I was just curious if they'd wake up Keir to tell him

RishiIsACuntWaffle · 14/07/2024 07:40

Wtf do they keep calling him "president trump" on the BBC.

He's a very dangerous man.

And the per-capita knife crime stats are far worse in the USA anyway!

It's just the American right wingers trying to promote the idea that the UK is overrun with knife crime for their own political purposes.

Once elected you never lose the title - a bit like Queen in the UK though it may have mother or consort added to it depending on circumstance.

Atethehalloweenchocs · 14/07/2024 00:33

Was coming on to say I would not put it past him to have set it up - but see I am not the only person who had that idea.

Yea I'm waiting for it "I took a bullet for this country"

Why does this even matter?

Of course they’d wake him up. My husband woke me up.

Seriously, you think the PM should wait until he wakes in the morning to read it in the newspaper with his cornflakes?

TooTiredOfThisShit · 14/07/2024 07:48

CormorantStrikesBack · 14/07/2024 07:29

Well I think this will increase his votes dramatically

I can see that people who are already trump supporters will glory in the violence of the thing, there are some powerful photos already out there, and I suppose it's the closest you can get to being a martyr for your cause without actually dieing.

But I don't think this will convince people who are undecided towards him. In fact, it may well negatively affect his remaining campaign rallies (whether he shows it or not, he will surely be terrified to get back up on a public stage) and those huge rallies are trump's biggest (only?) skill.

I get it - I very much don't want another 4 years of trump as president, but I don't see that this somehow hands it to him on a plate. Joe Biden's total inability to string a sentence together will be a bigger factor.

Agree!
Very convenient how nobody else was shot in such a packed place

I think you’ll find that one person was killed and others injured

BruceWillissDribble · 14/07/2024 01:22

There are some truly disgusting comments on this thread. Anyone calling fake or saying he deserved worse should have a word with themselves.

I don't think it's fake but I think he will use it to his advance.

Also if someone had shot and wounded Biden and killed people in the crowd, trump would have been shouting that it's a fake and the dead people where actors

tttigress · 14/07/2024 07:52

Personally I blame the media for whipping up a frenzy against Trump.

Look at the coverage he got (and continues to get) vs Biden, who has clearly been facing problems with some sort of dementia for years, but the media have only started to talk about it on the last month.

You see the problem with disgusting comments like this is that it’s a slippery slope. If we are allowed to think it’s ‘ok’ for those political figures we don’t agree with being shot, it’s a good thing Jo Cox was shot, correct?
