To not go to A and E?

MN224 · 13/07/2024 15:14

Persistent headache day 5 along with light headedness, heavy eyes, general lethargy. Have been taking regular pain relief nurofen and paracetamol, this has taken edge off but pain returns.

called into pharmacy this morning he told me to to A and E. phoned Out of hours doc she told me I needed checked and to go to A and E.

AIBU to not go and wait to see my GP on Monday? Obvs feel rubbish and wish pain would do one but I think there are so many more people worse off than me and hate taking up NHS time!

It is true. A&E don’t treat headaches unless something like dehydration or a nosebleed pushes you into the emergency category. They will just send you home with the headache ongoing.

This is not true. They will investigate if there is any emergency reason for the headache. They will take bloods. They will give you pain relief. They may prescribe something to help if this is necessary and you are safe to go home.

HousedInMySoul · 13/07/2024 21:39

Sorry I see the thread has moved on! Hope everything turns out OK, op, and nothing serious!
Good job you didn't listen to the person saying A&E won't do anything 😳

Boopeedoop · 13/07/2024 21:55

Hope all is ok. Seems that the medical professionals are taking it seriously.

Hope you feel better soon.

nonevernotever · 13/07/2024 22:12

I'm so glad you went to a and e. Sending you good wishes

ButterflySkies · 13/07/2024 22:17

I just wanted to say I understand why you asked this from recent A&E experiences but you've absolutely done the right thing and I hope - I'm saying this nicely - you are sent away with some targeted pain meds and told to get to some rest. Let us know how you get on. X

FluffyJellyCat · 13/07/2024 22:24

Good luck OP. The last time I had a five day headache I ended up admitted for five days.

Yes it was negative x

My husband had the same symptoms as you for 3 days before he tested positive

Don't feel like a dick ❤️ you've done the right thing.

Hope you are ok xxx

Noseybookworm · 13/07/2024 22:31

I would probably listen to the 2 medical professionals who have told you to go to a&e and get it checked. It's probably nothing sinister but I wouldn't wait till Monday.

Cuppapuppa · 13/07/2024 22:32

I feel like Mumsnet can be another world sometimes. I cant imagine going to a&e for a headache.

Yeah, the general consensus on here is don’t go unless you’re definitely dying but I would think the 2 medical professionals who advised the OP know a tad more that you?

Noseybookworm · 13/07/2024 22:33

Oops just seen that you've had a CT scan! Hope you get well soon OP and glad you're getting taken care of 💐

Demonhunter · 13/07/2024 22:34

I find it odd when people come and ask for the opinion of random unqualified strangers rather than the opinions of medical professionals.

Fair enough when it's chronic illnesses and sometimes anecdotal advice can help but not when it comes to something acute.

justasking111 · 13/07/2024 22:36

Good wishes OP

My point is, just use your adult brain and look at all the information and make an informed decision.

if you don’t want to go to a and e and sit on a hard chair, absolutely your perogative. So make a plan that works for you based on your situation and what you want to happen.

i just find it so wet to come on here and be like ooh I don’t know, I don’t want to waste peoples time even though two medical sources have advised me to do X…what should I do hun x

Sometimes people just want a reality check. I mean people do it all the time on here. If you find it so 'wet' just read another thread. It's ok to ask for help and many people are willing to give it. You don't want to? No problem. Just let those who do want to help post and stop policing the thread.

BirthdayRainbow · 13/07/2024 22:42

We hear all the time that the NHS is broken and waiting in A and E will be literally hours. No wonder people don't want to go.

I feel like Mumsnet can be another world sometimes. I cant imagine going to a&e for a headache.

A friend’s brother died of meningitis. His only symptom prior to unresponsiveness and death was a severe headache, which he refused to go to A&E with because he also couldn’t imagine going to A&E with a headache.

Enough with the irresponsible posts, please! She’s been advised to go to A&E.

CopperNanoTubes · 13/07/2024 22:51

Hope you’re doing ok op 💐

Moier · 13/07/2024 22:53

Just watched an old Casulty 24/7 ( Barnsley hospital) bloke had same symptoms.
Turned out to me meningitis.

I feel like Mumsnet can be another world sometimes. I cant imagine going to a&e for a headache.

This is a very stupid thing to say. Hopefully no one reading the thread will take any notice of this.

Rustytoasty · 13/07/2024 22:54

Hope you’re ok OP. Are you staying overnight? X

I feel like Mumsnet can be another world sometimes. I cant imagine going to a&e for a headache.

Thankfully, when I worked on a medical assessment until, someone did come in with a headache for 5 + days. They had a bleed on the brain and were blue lighted to the nearest neuro hospital. They probably would have died, had they not questioned it, gone back to the GP, and been sent in. Perfectly fit and healthy, young person.

UnhappyAndYouKnowIt · 13/07/2024 22:58

For the worst headaches I use migraleve alternating with ibuprofen and a cold pack on my head. Plus lucozade and some sort of clear sweet. The codeine in the migraleve is what does it

MollyButton · 13/07/2024 23:06

I went to A and E with my ex with a headache - it was viral meningitis. There was a woman there at the time with a headache - uncontrolled migraine.
Of course there are also plenty of worse things it could have been.
There are headaches and headaches - some do need A and E, others a couple of paracetamol

VJBR · 13/07/2024 23:07

Hope you are okay. Sounds like they saw you quite quickly.
