To not go to A and E?

MN224 · 13/07/2024 15:14

Persistent headache day 5 along with light headedness, heavy eyes, general lethargy. Have been taking regular pain relief nurofen and paracetamol, this has taken edge off but pain returns.

called into pharmacy this morning he told me to to A and E. phoned Out of hours doc she told me I needed checked and to go to A and E.

AIBU to not go and wait to see my GP on Monday? Obvs feel rubbish and wish pain would do one but I think there are so many more people worse off than me and hate taking up NHS time!

No true, headaches are symptomatic of many things.

Op you've had two separate lots of medical advice, I'm not sure what you want from Mumsnet. A group of strangers to say you should ignore advice and go to GP tomorrow? Seems like you already think that so I'm with the PP in saying this is all a bit pointless.

It is true. A&E don’t treat headaches unless something like dehydration or a nosebleed pushes you into the emergency category. They will just send you home with the headache ongoing.

PragmaticWench · 13/07/2024 16:22

This isn't true. My GP sent me to A&E with a persistent headache, I was admitted for a week and am now being treated by specialist neurologists a year later. A&E was absolutely where I needed to go.

Your case is unusual. I have had a persistant headache for 30 years and haven’t even been treated when I’ve gone to the A&E with cluster headaches or migraines.

SoftandQuiet · 13/07/2024 17:02

Yes but A&E will be able to do a full assessment and any tests to rule out anything serious. THEN if its ‘just’ a headache, they’ll send you on your way.

Wrong thread sorry

Yeah - feeling blunt I guess… I spent many years working in countries with very poor medical services and where people could often not afford to buy basic antibiotics etc

so not much tolerance for martyrish bleating!

I don't think this is martyrish bleating! The fact is she'll probably go to A&E where she'll sit on a plastic chair for hours making her feel even more ill and then she'll just get sent home!

I had this where I had pain in my chest as part of other symptoms. I was told to go to A&E - I queried it as knew it wasn't a heart attack. There was a couple of things it could be linked to my other symptoms. Anyway GP insisted I went to A&E. I was so unwell I'd been in bed but now I had to sit on a hard chair for hours which just made me feel more unwell. When I finally saw the doctor he was baffled why I was there. Checked I knew the symptoms of a heart attack and this wasn't it. I said I know it isn't and I didn't want to come. He was nice about it but yeah, I completely wasted their time.

cloudy477654 · 13/07/2024 17:19

If both A&E and out of hours have said go to A&E then I think you should, it's not wasting their time , that's what they're there for. There's no guarantee you'll see the GP on Monday and if it is something serious you don't want to be waiting another 2 days.
You don't know that this is just a headache or migraine, it could be a number of things.

Andthereitis · 13/07/2024 17:23

If you're not going to A&E then leave a note to explain why to help the coroner.

My point is, just use your adult brain and look at all the information and make an informed decision.

if you don’t want to go to a and e and sit on a hard chair, absolutely your perogative. So make a plan that works for you based on your situation and what you want to happen.

i just find it so wet to come on here and be like ooh I don’t know, I don’t want to waste peoples time even though two medical sources have advised me to do X…what should I do hun x

Mukirinessly · 13/07/2024 17:26

Go to A & E FFS.

I was sent last week. I didn’t want to go, I thought I’d just got unfit. I went and a CT scan showed multiple blood clots in both my lungs.

BirthdayRainbow · 13/07/2024 17:32

Yep, I had a headache for two weeks though it wasn't horrific I just had to stay in bed. Finally went to hospital. Misdiagnosed. Crap treatment. Went to see OOO GP another day and ended up in hospital for a week with something else and all in all poorly for 11 weeks.

No one knows if she will just get sent home and hopefully if she does that means it's nothing serious. She will need to advocate for herself if she's not happy with their assessment.

Krumblina · 13/07/2024 17:51

Do you have a history of headaches. Is there a reason you don't think this is a concern?

Greybeardy · 13/07/2024 18:14

StormingNorman · 13/07/2024 15:19

A&E don’t do anything for headaches unless you have an uncontrolled nosebleed, are at risk of dehydration from vomiting or have stroke symptoms.

You’d be better calling 111.

Personally, I’d get some ibuprofen lysine (Nurofen Migraine Pain and Boots do an own brand version). Much better than paracetamol and standard nurofen.

guessing you've never seen the utter devastation that ignoring a sentinel bleed headache can cause.... or heard of meningitis... or raised intracranial pressure... or carbon monoxide poisoning... or quite a lot of other things it's not at all uncommon to see and manage in ED.

BippetyBoppetyBooHoo · 13/07/2024 18:25

I feel like Mumsnet can be another world sometimes. I cant imagine going to a&e for a headache.

No history - out of hours doc wanted me to to due to symptoms.

Even if two medical professionals had deemed it necessary?

Yes go. If this is something completely new, 5 days is a long time and if pain killers aren't touching it. Get it checked

People are advising her to go based on the fact 2 medically trained professionals have told her to go to A&E

If you’re talking about the ED you don’t understand the utter shite that is the NHS. They’ll will fob you off before they treat you in most cases.

ThinWomansBrain · 13/07/2024 18:35

Friend of mine had a week of headaches and dizziness, and was taken to A&E when she was faint and dizzy while out.
Still in hospital, almost a week and a couple of MRI scans later, about to be transferred to another with a neurological unit.

Hopefully whatever is causing your problems is less serious & you feel better soon, but crack on with seeking medical advice and rejecting it in favour of random opinions on the internet.

MN224 · 13/07/2024 18:48

That’s me in A and E now, bloods done and waiting for the doc 👍

Excourtclerk · 13/07/2024 19:02

2 people have told you to go to A&E one of which was NHS 111 if you choose to go against this advice that's up to you not a forum to help you decide. Depends how much you value your health personally if I had been advised twice to go to A&E I would be going otherwise why seek advice on the first place to ignore it.

You can't possibly know it's true. I've been admitted 3 times with headaches, all symptomatic of extreme infection and all requiring urgent treatment and admission. You have no idea whether a headache is just a headache or not.

But you did see that I actually advised to call 111 and then when OP said she had, I advised to go to A&E?

MN224 · 13/07/2024 21:25

Just had a CT scan ……so yep feel like a dick for considering not coming over here 😢
