To not go to A and E?

MN224 · 13/07/2024 15:14

Persistent headache day 5 along with light headedness, heavy eyes, general lethargy. Have been taking regular pain relief nurofen and paracetamol, this has taken edge off but pain returns.

called into pharmacy this morning he told me to to A and E. phoned Out of hours doc she told me I needed checked and to go to A and E.

AIBU to not go and wait to see my GP on Monday? Obvs feel rubbish and wish pain would do one but I think there are so many more people worse off than me and hate taking up NHS time!

You have already used nhs time by visiting a pharmacy and calling out of hours doc.

both have given you the same advice. It’s up to you whether you take it. Your post is utterly pointless. Stop being a martyr and take charge of yourself you are a grown woman. If you are unable then suggest you seek urgent therapy to address your low self esteem and needy behaviour

hope you feel better - there’s no need to suffer

There’s no need to be so harsh. I had a migraine for two weeks. Went to a&e. Got turfed out. No treatment but co-codamol. After paying. It turned out I had a heart condition causing the migraines. Unfortunately a&e don’t want to know these days.

That’s me home, scan and bloods all clear thank
goodness so stronger painkillers prescribed that I’ll start tonight. A and E consultant couldn’t have been nicer and he too was relieved the scan was clear. All done in under 4 hours - gotta love the NHS ❤️

Thanks for all the advice x

Good to hear someone praise the NHS for once.

Good to hear someone praise the NHS for once.

I will sing their praises for the rest of my life, they saved it three times and without them my children would be without a mother.

Glad all is well OP. It's always worth getting checked out with neurological symptoms that are unusual for you. I say that as somebody who got the shock of their life when I finally had an MRI after years of migraines. It's better to be safe than sorry.

A&E don’t do anything for headaches unless you have an uncontrolled nosebleed, are at risk of dehydration from vomiting or have stroke symptoms.

You’d be better calling 111.

Personally, I’d get some ibuprofen lysine (Nurofen Migraine Pain and Boots do an own brand version). Much better than paracetamol and standard nurofen.

I got sent to A&E with a persistent 10 day migraine. Nothing I was taking was shifting it. I was given 3 aspirin then a cannula put in and given IV paracetamol and anti sickness medication plus chlorpromazine for the dizziness. They put me on oxygen too. My oxygen levels were fine but the Dr said sometimes the extra oxygen can help with a migraine.

I feel like Mumsnet can be another world sometimes. I cant imagine going to a&e for a headache.

My sister died from a brain abscess. Maybe if she had gone to A&E about her 5 day headache, she would be still here. But who would go to A&E because of a headache, eh?

Oxygen defo would help with mine. I always get hypoxia early doors. Like the start of an asthma attack. I did ask my GP about an inhaler but he said no.

You can buy an inhaler online.

Four hours all in is utterly amazing

Greenlittecat · 14/07/2024 09:09

That's brilliant! They obviously were taking it seriously due to the short amount of time you were there.

So relieved the scans all came back clear.

Hopefully it goes soon ❤️

Except in this case they clearly did 🤣

Are you medically trained?

Two people who are medically trained have listened to the OP's symptoms in real life and advised her to visit A&E.

I'd have thought their opinion was more specific listed and important than a random person in the internet.

Sometimes people just want a reality check. I mean people do it all the time on here. If you find it so 'wet' just read another thread. It's ok to ask for help and many people are willing to give it. You don't want to? No problem. Just let those who do want to help post and stop policing the thread.

Yeah I get it, it can be hard sometimes - low self confidence, low self worth, difficulty in using critical thinking skills… I am glad op took support from all the posters (myself included) who encouraged her to follow the medical advice she had been given and go… hopefully any next time she will feel less of a burden

NamelessNancy · 14/07/2024 09:33

"Can't imagine going to A and E for a headache" FFS some of these threads are bordering on dangerous with the insistence that nobody should ever go in. Glad you went and got checked OP. Hope you feel better soon.

Mukirinessly · 15/07/2024 05:15

I was a bit breathless. Mumsnet would have told me to get fit. The practice nurse told me to go to A & E. I went and a scan showed multiple blood clots on both lungs.

"Difficulty in critical thinking"
The insult really isn't necessary.

Many people, when genuinely ill enough to warrant emergency treatment & serious intervention may have their ability to think things through clearly compromised, either through fear or the medical emergency itself.

Yes hence the “difficulty” in critical thinking … not the absence of it

Friend had same thing. Ignored it and now she has a brain tumour and year to live.

Not saying that you a tumour but for gods sakes get it checked. Friend wishing she had......

@BestDIL
