To think that dogs shouldn't be in toilets?

LittlePearDrop · 13/07/2024 08:28

I'm currently camping.

There's signs on the toilet / shower block door clearly indicating "No Dogs". Not small signs. Very obvious.

Went for a shower first thing this morning and a woman brought a dog into the toilet next to me. It poked its head under the gap and had a sniff. I just ignored it.

Took my daughter an hour later and whilst I'm waiting for her, another woman brings another dog in. This time, thinking maybe she has missed the sign, I said, very politely and calmly "Oh it's no dogs in here".

She immediately became defensive, saying there's no one else to look after him (there's a fence outside she could have tied him to) and that he would "cry" if left outside. Errm, so what? Dogs whine. It's not the end of the world.

AIBU to think that if the signs say "no dogs" then it means "no dogs" and not, "Well ok your dog can come in because it might whine if left alone for a minute"?

@FinalCeleryScheme if you can be arsed, ask your local police force how dog theft is recorded. I deal with this every day. You have no idea.

There’s a commons library paper that covers the stats and their collection. It accepts limitations in them but there’s broad agreement about the scale. It just doesn’t seem to be true that the stats are “meaningless”.

No idea, that's not my problem. It's not an excuse to blatantly ignore 'no dogs' signs though.

Justforthisthread24 · 14/07/2024 20:27

A commons paper? Written by the government, collected from the police and their utterly useless statistics? Right. Which part of “dog theft is not recorded as dog theft” is not clear? You have spent 2 minutes and googled. I have spent YEARS dealing with this shit, speaking to police forces across the country, every day. Dog theft IS NOT recorded as dog theft in a lot of cases, it is recorded as theft of a possession. My own dog was recorded as theft of a possession, the majority still are. Therefore, there are no meaningful statistics on dog theft because a lot of police forces have never recorded it as a separate crime. I’m not quite sure on what basis you say “I don’t believe that” but you are, quite simply, wrong.

@Calliopespa you would think so but the last dog I met there was a massive golden doodle, with his friend the Giant Schnauzer 🥰 Very well behaved and bothered no one, even in the loo 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Tbh I always take my dogs in public toilets. I don’t see an issue with it, they’re literally in there for minutes and make no mess. I would never leave my dog tied up outside, there’s way too many dog thefts nowadays

CommeUneVacheEspagnole · 14/07/2024 21:03

Dogs have to be under control at all times in public spaces. They can't be under control if you're not with them. I would think anyone who left a dog unattended and unwatched was a bell end of ultimate proportions.

Also, if someone came up to my dog without me there, he would 100% bite them. People can't be trusted not to touch and not to steal.

I solo hike and camp, campsites say that they are dog friendly, but there's no way of knowing until arrival how friendly. Is my dog allowed in the cafe/facilities block? If my dog is not welcome, neither am I. I do take my dog in the facilities, neither he nor I want him tied up outside. He makes less mess and causes less trouble than many adults or children.

You not seeing an issue with it doesn't mean there isn't an issue with it. 🫣

CommeUneVacheEspagnole · 14/07/2024 21:23

@Munter the dog wouldn't be sticking his head out. If someone sticks their head in, I think me and the dog would be within reason to bite it off - but he wouldn't.

I have once taken the dog in the toilet with me and it was fine. I'd always make sure I didn't just walk out etc, I'm aware not all people like dogs and don't want them around them. Otherwise, he is firmly left with a responsible adult so I can wee in peace.

You not seeing an issue with it doesn't mean there isn't an issue with it. 🫣

But has anyone actually articulated WHAT the issue is? Apart from being irritated that “ entitled” people are getting their own way?

Do dogs steal their food off their plates at cafes? Do these people like to eat bits they have dropped on the floor and think having dogs in there makes it more unhygienic to do this? Or that the dog will beat them to it? Do they not like dogs seeing them naked in shower cubicles? I’m just not managing to see what the substantive issue with it is. Is it simply intolerance?

Yes, I replied above.

that is someone else’s opinion that there is an issue. Other people don’t have an issue. Both are opinions and not facts. I see more of an issue with leaving dogs outside on their own than letting them in a toilet. Other humans are more of an issue in toilets than dogs

Dogs aren't more important than humans.
Respect signs.

WiddlinDiddlin · 14/07/2024 22:06

The issues appear to be:

Someone with a horrible allergy might also need to use the facilities/venue/location.

Someone with a terrible dog phobia may need to use the facilities/venue/location.

It's not allowed, theres a sign that says so, so dog owners who ignore the sign are awfully entitled and their dogs are all disease ridden, child eating, slavering mutts from hell??

I can only see you saying that just because others don’t see an issue doesn’t mean there isn’t one?

Ah I see. Why are these highly allergic dog phobic people at dog friendly campsites?

Look harder.

WiddlinDiddlin · 14/07/2024 22:08

Ahhhhhh my bad..

Thats the issue.

That dog owners believe their dogs are more important than people.

Thats the one.

Nice twisting there.
No wonder people are sick of entitled dog owners.

PuttingDownRoots · 14/07/2024 22:08

It would have been banned due to irresponsible dog owners allowing their their animals to damage things, or make a mess.

For me the issue is people ignoring the rules.

At this point I'm going to put this on my headstone but if a sign says no dogs it means no dogs!

Not a clue. Some sort of holiday scheme for horribly dog allergic, dog phobic people?
