To do beans on toast once a week?

MollyAndMuck · 12/07/2024 22:39

Doing a different work pattern soon and two nights a week will be a lot of pressure to pick up DCs (infant age) from after school, feed them and not end up putting to bed too late.

I can't cook from scratch these nights and realistically don't think I'll be organised enough to batch cook for both nights.

AIBU to give my kids beans on toast every week for one evening meal? I know it's UPF but at least it's some kind of veg and very quick. They'll be having a hot lunch at school and are pretty good at eating it.

@StrangerOnThePlane i was replying to someone who had quoted me as having 2 slices and in this conversation and context the number was relevant.

I know. I'm saying none of it matters. If someone wants to have 6 slices of toast and 3 tins of beans and call it a snack, then it's a snack. 🤣

You can’t possibly call it a snack if it hasn’t got grated cheese on top 🤪

Yes of course. We have a jacket potato plus stuff evening once a week and the favourite is beans and cheese.

Jacket potatoes aren't a quick meal in our house though as I really dislike ones that have been anywhere near a microwave, whether for the full amount or just part of it. Changes the whole texture of the potato!

Fully oven baked, skin crispy with salt, is the only way I will have them - which means a lengthy time in a low ish oven, so no quick fix tea here,

Yes! Crispy with salt and drowned in olive oil 🤤🤤

If you use good bread and add cheese, apparently BoT is one of the most nutritionally balanced meals you can have! Carbs, protein, fats, beans are 1 of your 5 a day.....

Winner!

Baked beans are awesome. I'm not keen on them on toast, due to the soggification. But I adore them on a jacket potato, next to or semi covering chips, potato waffles, any potato basically!
I also just discovered tinned bean salad, it's great if you drain it and add a bit of oil and lemon.
Beans are fantastic!
I used to love the ones with mini sausages when I was a kid 🤤

I have 3 sons. When they were young dh and I both worked full-time. Thursday nights were a nightmare. Cubs, Beavers, football etc. Beans and cheese on toast was our Thursday tea for years. My youngest is now 30 and he still loves beans and cheese on toast. It will do them no harm and will save your sanity

I can't tell if this is a joke but at least it's proved that there's never a good MN batshit food thread without reference to the 'cucumber antidote' where you can assuage your guilt at failing to meet MN nutritional standards by randomly adding cucumber to what you've served despite it not going with the rest of the meal.

You laugh - but my dd did once ask for beans on toast with eggs, cheese, and - wait for it - broccoli for lunch. Luckily I had some frozen in the freezer, but what kid asks for broccoli as a side to toast 😅

Anyway, yanbu OP. I'm baffled by potato waffles in the toaster though, do PP's just bung them in frozen? How long do they take?

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 20/07/2024 16:46

Potato waffles in the toaster are great. Yes, you just bung them in straight from the freezer and toast till nice and hot and a touch brown. I usually put them through twice to achieve optimum crispness. I suspect if you did it often it might be an issue for the toaster but potato waffles are an occasional treat for me these days, so I have no qualms.

As always on mumsnet, people go the extremes and get a bit ridiculous.

It can be a snack or it can be a meal. It r depends how big it is and how big the person eating it is. Sometimes I have peanut butter on toast as a snack. Sometimes it’s a full meal. Let’s not worry about it. I think op knows her child and we’ve decided that it’s a perfectly fine dinner for a small child who also gets a hot meal at nursery. If he/she is still hungry, maybe they can have seconds?

Bodeganights · 20/07/2024 17:24

Beans or spaghetti hoops or beans and sausage, scrambled egg or tinned tomatoes or shakshuka on;-
Toast, crumpet, baked potatoes, bagels, pitta <<messy but possible, foccacia, wraps<<better with scrambled egg, Hawaiian rolls, just pick something random from shop.
Cheese on any of the above, cheese and beans on any of the above.
All fine meals.
Or in this heat, just a sandwich.
Food is food, quick food is also food.

Try pitta pizzas too. If you use a wholemeal pitta and spread with tomato purée and add grated cheese and any toppings they like it’s so tasty, speedy( 10 mins in oven or 5/6 in air fryer) and healthy.
