To do beans on toast once a week?

MollyAndMuck · 12/07/2024 22:39

Doing a different work pattern soon and two nights a week will be a lot of pressure to pick up DCs (infant age) from after school, feed them and not end up putting to bed too late.

I can't cook from scratch these nights and realistically don't think I'll be organised enough to batch cook for both nights.

AIBU to give my kids beans on toast every week for one evening meal? I know it's UPF but at least it's some kind of veg and very quick. They'll be having a hot lunch at school and are pretty good at eating it.

What sort of bread, how many slices, how many beans? All that turns it from a snack into a meal and back again.

Quite a few, normal bread, tiger bread whatever breads in the house and a tin of beans. My teen definitely sees it as a snack

Boys stomachs are bottomless 😁

LuckySantangelo35 · 18/07/2024 13:58

A whole tin of beans, 2 slices of bread and cheese on top or whatever is most definitely a meal and not a snack for anyone regardless of their age or sex!

It is if they eat it as a snack. 🤷🏻‍♀️

greengreyblue · 18/07/2024 16:39

That’s not a snack!! Jeez! It’s weird how it’s ok for teen boys to eat huge amounts. I grew up with two brothers over 6ft and they ate like the rest of us. Unless they do lots of sport it’s just setting them up for bad habits. My DH is 6ft 4 exercises most nights and eats larger portions than me but it would not be ok for him to hoover up more than his fair share!

Presumably your husband isn't going through puberty and still growing?

I'm on my 3rd teen and they've alo eaten like this while going through puberty, the 13 year old is now 6"2, still growing and still eating more than us

Both the older ones stopped eating so much once they'd stopped growing so I'm not worried about bad eating habits

greengreyblue · 18/07/2024 17:24

i wasn’t given extra food when going through puberty!

Kids going through puberty need extra nutrition as they're growing. Just because you weren't given 'extra' doesn't mean kids don't need more than they needed before entering puberty.
Fairly obvious really.

Don't forget Alphabeti Spaghetti!

greengreyblue · 18/07/2024 17:38

Probably more important that it’s nutritious than extra. But like pregnancy, people over compensate.
My DM cooked good home meals, we always had boiled eggs or porridge for breakfast and a packed lunch , peanut butter on toast after school then a proper meat and two veg dinner.

@greengreyblue

i agree. Plus the food shop bill must be enormous!

irishmurdoch · 18/07/2024 17:40

Absolutely fine! Most days my dd has a cooked meal at school, so I just give her a sandwich with the ubiquitous cucumbers and cherry toms for tea

Newsenmum · 18/07/2024 17:45

LuckySantangelo35 · 12/07/2024 23:00

@JC03745

why? Why can’t they just have beans on toast?

This 🤣

op why would there be anything wrong with beans on toast? If they’re having a hot meal at school every day then a sandwich is fine. Crikey.

Needmorelego · 18/07/2024 17:46

@Justkeeprollingalong only if you're prepared to spell out rude words.

greengreyblue · 18/07/2024 18:08

I love beans on toast but I find it’s very filling so would have it for lunch or breakfast.

Surely at one point you stopped eating child sized meals!

Yeah, swarm in and eat everything in sight

How ridiculous. As a pp said, if someone eats it as a snack, then it's a snack. It's odd to have such rigid ideas about what can and can't be a snack for someone else. 🤪

This is mumsnet, so maybe not. 😬

Well the poster had a snack of peanut butter and toast as well , but some how that's different to a tin of beans and toast 🤣🤣

Enormous? For some extra bread and tins of beans? Mine also has lidl weetabix sometimes or pasta so no, it doesn't make the shopping bill enormous

greengreyblue · 18/07/2024 20:52

@Newsenmum Of course I went from child size to adult size meals but I’m talking about teens being given masses of extra food. I’ve heard of these teenage sons that drink 4 pints of milk by the fridge and a family pizza as a snack between meals. Nobody needs that.

That's not what we are talking about on here though , we are talking about toast and beans and you said you were never given any extra food during puberty , no one mentioned pints of milk or whole pizzas
