To do beans on toast once a week?

MollyAndMuck · 12/07/2024 22:39

Doing a different work pattern soon and two nights a week will be a lot of pressure to pick up DCs (infant age) from after school, feed them and not end up putting to bed too late.

I can't cook from scratch these nights and realistically don't think I'll be organised enough to batch cook for both nights.

AIBU to give my kids beans on toast every week for one evening meal? I know it's UPF but at least it's some kind of veg and very quick. They'll be having a hot lunch at school and are pretty good at eating it.

Beans on toast is lush, not to mention pretty healthy. What’s the problem here? It’s a ball ache to cook a hot home cooked meal every single fecking night. Beans on toast is perfect.

Sleepytiredyawn · 14/07/2024 18:39

My son had it for his tea one night and for his lunch today so more than once a week. Don’t stress over it, fed is best.

Bolognaise freezes really well and pasta is quick make for a quick tea, that’s one of my go too’s. Freezing down mash works well too for a quick tea, sausage and mash or fry off some chicken and frozen veg quick.

DeeDoyle · 14/07/2024 18:40

Beans arent veg.......but yes perfectly fine, throw some cheese on top to add another food group.x

‘Fed is best’? It’s not like formula vs breast. They’re not babies anymore, beans on toast perfectly healthy. Healthier than sausages!

Omelette I can see, but risotto is definitely not a quick meal for me!

40 min from scratch and most of that is just sitting simmering while you get on with other things.

SummerTimeIsTheBest · 14/07/2024 18:56

Won’t they be hungry?

StopInhalingRevels · 14/07/2024 18:57

Stir a big chunk of butter into the beans. A squirt of BBQ sauce, and a sliced pepperami.

Utterly fabulous filth.

kitsuneghost · 14/07/2024 18:57

Fajitas or tacos?

Why would they be hungry?

Baked beans have high levels of protein and fibre and are available with low sugar. They form part of a healthy diet.

Xmasdaft2023 · 14/07/2024 20:33

We have a night like this, likely 2 after the summer.. our go to meals are: (just incase it helps!)
soup
goujons in wraps
beans on toast/muffins
sandwiches/toasties
pizza naans (6 mins in an air fryer)
French toast
bagels
Probably loads more but those are the easy ones ☺️

twoboystwodogs · 14/07/2024 20:58

Don't over think it, this is absolutely fine. My youngest won't eat toast so he has beans on plate 😋

ODFOx · 14/07/2024 21:39

Beans on Toast with a fried egg on top was a weekly supper at school and a Saturday brunch in the holidays at home.
I was 23 before I admitted to myself that I'm not keen on beans and egg together. But apart from egg I don't think that there is much that beans doesn't go with: when DS was at his fussiest and would only eat things with 'dip' I served cucumber sticks and toast fingers with blitzed baked bean dip (cold) and it went down a storm!!

ghostyslovesheets · 14/07/2024 21:53

I had half a tin of beans with cheese for my tea Thursday night - I was shattered and CBA making anything - it was lovely

DD3 is currently obsessed with what we used to call 'chucky eggs with soldiers' - she's having two every night - with white toast and salted butter - just delicious

I agree the UPF panic needs to shhhhhh a little!

Yes, but OP has minutes to throw a meal together and get it eaten before it's time for bath and bed. Risotto is great for a day when there's more time.

Tell me more about pizza naans, do you do tomato sauce (passata?) and cheese and toppings? Or just cheese and toppings?

I think we might live quite different lives if 40 mins is a super quick meal for you! Simple, maybe, quick, no.

Have also seen them with a curry sauce and then chicken and cheese. We prefer them as if they’re pizzas!

Mackerel on toast, peanut butter on toast, eggs on toast, cheese on toast... toasties! Love a toastie. All good and acceptable for tea

Back in the 1980s Findus sold 'french bread pizza'. If you have an air fryer you can use any bread / crumpet / pita bread and even pastry with pizza toppings.

I have even done it with a piece of fish but in the oven because it was before I got an air fryer.

A quick way to cook eggs is in the microwave. Oil or spray oil ramekins, depending on the size of ramekin put one or two eggs in.

BREAK THE YOLK, this is important as there is more fat in the yolk so it can cook quicker than the white and explode. Just piece with a knife or cocktail stick so the yolk can expand.

Put on half power for 2 mins, then check, they may need longer - serve on toast.

I think this should go in classics, not because it is funny but I think everyone needs to know a few quick meals.

Bjorkdidit · 15/07/2024 07:39

A word of warning for anyone considering making pizza in the air fryer. If you use grated cheese or lighter toppings like sliced mushrooms, they get blown everywhere, or they do in ours at least. Crumble is also problematic.

But ours us quite a basic one and I haven't actually studied any of the settings to see if the fan speed is lower on any of them.

These people that 'throw stuff together in minutes' clearly never have my problems of peeling a reluctant onion and garlic, taking ages because the skin is getting under my fingernail and sticking to my fingers, then the chopping

It isnt seconds, it takes quite a while to chop up veg, particularly carrot and celery, plus if you're going to cook something like a ragu/risotto whereby anything that needs the onions cooking down, I cook the onions down for around 40 mins before adding anything else in, Im certainly not seeing that as quick cooking, thats for a whole day batch cooking
