The BBC are reporting that there are Labour mps calling for the new government to scrap the limit of 2 children on child benefit

I'm working class and have family members who have had, 7, 5 and several 4 kids. Neither parent worked and the fact that each child got benefit encouraged them to have more, even though they really could not afford it.

so Labour mps want to encourage people who struggle, and those who don't actually, to have more kids...with the impact on the state, housing in the future and the environment..discuss

I mean, capping benefits didn’t stop your relatives from having large families, did it? I’m not sure there’s much to be said for punishing the children who didn’t ask to be born.

There's something particularly irritating about people who end a post with 'discuss'.

SundayTulips · 11/07/2024 19:52

I’d describe this as a difference of opinion on policy, not a fuck up!

Peterbeardwy · 11/07/2024 19:53

Did they all have fancy mobiles and sky tv too op ? ?!

RubyBirdy · 11/07/2024 19:54

Oh behave, picking holes already in the government wanting to make sure children aren’t in poverty, after the absolute clown shoes that have just left the country in such a mess and huge numbers of families using food banks. Bore off.

Berga · 11/07/2024 19:54

Are you working class OP or a late to the party bot?

Sirzy · 11/07/2024 19:54

A lot of people who work around child poverty have been calling for this to happen for a while though.

I can see both sides of the argument to a degree but overall don’t think a policy change to help prevent children from starving is a fuck up!

This was bound to happen in the interest of their biggest supporters. They all have 2+ kids. There will be more changes made to our laws just to please them :(

RishiIsACuntWaffle · 11/07/2024 19:55

The two-child cap prevents parents from claiming universal credit or child tax credit for a third child,

It isn't child benefit that's affected...

CatrionaBalfour · 11/07/2024 19:56

Sounds like a desperate attempt to criticise the government. Obviously been scratching around for something - discuss.

.

AquaFurball · 11/07/2024 19:57

Wouldn't it be more helpful to your post to include statistics as to whether it's working or not? Are less people having 3 children since the 2 child cap came into effect 7 years ago or not?

ByCupidStunt · 11/07/2024 19:58

I don't think child benefit should ever have been means tested.

I'm not sure that many women are having loads of kids because the government gives them £20 a week for them.

DancingPhantomsOnTheTerrace · 11/07/2024 19:58

What's the fuck up? Backbench MPs have called for something you don't agree with, and that there is no sign of the government actually doing?

Ponoka7 · 11/07/2024 19:58

There is no cap re child benefit. There is if UC has to be claimed. It's a tiny minority that chooses to have children in a poverty situation. It's the families were they lose one parent (for whatever reason), lose their employment, parental disability and then make a claim with all three children already in exsitance. We need people to have children, we have to start supporting families. Poverty and disadvantage leads to poorer outcome which costs the country more than throwing parents a bit more money each month.

CatrionaBalfour · 11/07/2024 19:59

Exactly, @Ponoka7

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 11/07/2024 20:01

Well we have a declining population. Dont we need more children?

I hope they do reintroduce it. The Tories were grinches.

fieldsofbutterflies · 11/07/2024 20:01

Why should children be forced to live in poverty because of the choices made by their parents?

What is your solution to the falling birth rate and child poverty? What do you think that spending should be directed towards?

Antsinmypantsneedtodance · 11/07/2024 20:01

If you think this is the first labour fuck up, YABU. Announcing they want to release a load of prisoners to me was a bigger fuck up.

Removing the cap on child benefit is the least of our problems in this country if you ask me.

BarcardiWithGadaffia · 11/07/2024 20:02

Which limit on child benefit? You can get it for an many children as you have

MyMauveBiscuit · 11/07/2024 20:03

Ponoka7 · 11/07/2024 20:01

Erm, a more favourable environment for young, fit migrants who contribute more than they take out of the system

And generous benefits don’t equal population growth

Look at Sweden. Their birth rate is basically the same as ours for all of their family friendly policies.

orangesandlemonssaythebellsofstclements · 11/07/2024 20:04

I'm sorry - what?

You know that child benefit is £16.95 a week* *for children after the first child?

Are you saying that you had relatives that had extra kids so they could get less than 20 quid a week for them???

I am not buying that.

Moonshiners · 11/07/2024 20:06

Maybe we need to look at more innovative ways to help children, I know way too many parents who smoke, drink and do drugs, then use foodbanks and moan about benefits and no money, perhaps we need to look at giving some of the UC and CB to the schools to run breakfast clubs and evening child care and meals. with the savings of reducing money to parents then the schools for much less could easily provide three meals a day cheaper and even run programs to provide free child supervision for working families, you would only need a few quid removed from each child to fund a teacher in school to be available for the additional hours and the cost to introduce CB back to all kids could be easily used instead to buy the food for those three meals, then ALL kids would be getting enough food regardless of parental choice, I live in flats with three bad mums, they would not look after their kids properly even if you gave them £2000 a week.

fieldsofbutterflies · 11/07/2024 20:01

Why should children be forced to live in poverty because of the choices made by their parents?

Yes this - the cap has had no demonstrable impact on family size but has had a huge impact on poverty, including families where parents are in work. It's a cruel policy.
