The BBC are reporting that there are Labour mps calling for the new government to scrap the limit of 2 children on child benefit

I'm working class and have family members who have had, 7, 5 and several 4 kids. Neither parent worked and the fact that each child got benefit encouraged them to have more, even though they really could not afford it.

so Labour mps want to encourage people who struggle, and those who don't actually, to have more kids...with the impact on the state, housing in the future and the environment..discuss

Did they all have fancy mobiles and sky tv too op ? ?!

Don't forget the multiple AI holidays, free car and not-a-CRT-because-they-haven't-been-made-for-years TV.

AzureAnt · 11/07/2024 20:23

Sure, keep the already bloated welfare state getting even bigger. Why bother getting off your arse and working to feed and clothe your kids when some other gormless fucker ie: the British tax payer can pay for it

It's not a cap on child benefit, child benefit can be claimed for all children.

It's something to do with universal credit. But I'm not sure of the amounts.

Child benefit is capped at 2 children. It was a Tory flagship policy.

I think you are allowed more if the child is a product of rape.

How kind.

Yes but only the bare minimum they have to.

If you think this is the first labour fuck up, YABU. Announcing they want to release a load of prisoners to me was a bigger fuck up.

Removing the cap on child benefit is the least of our problems in this country if you ask me.

And that is to try and address another Tory mess…discuss @G123456789

I have had hard times but what I didn't do was bring more children into the world when I had no money to support them

What do you want existing children to be in further poverty? How much is CB these days anyway I can't imagine it's a lot .people often have kids regardless the "cap" hasn't stopped bigger families.

Yes but only the bare minimum they have to.

So you are saying anybody who works and gets benefits is doing the bare minimum. Do you have links for that?

So only the rich should have large families?

Shit happens, people get pregnant, adults make dumb choices sometimes BUT children suffer - by the way it applies to CB, UC and CTC - a lot of those are paid to working families - who maybe could afford their 3 kids before the cost of living crisis.

Everyone should limit their families, but if you can't afford to give your children a decent life then that should also inform your choices, not assume someone else will support them. And yes shit happens.

Oh god, I was going to say this.

Also it’s not a fuck up, some MPs think one way, some another way. No policy has changed although it might in the future.

Personally, I believe it’s society’s responsibility to take care of all of its citizens, including those whose parents were maybe financially irresponsible in deciding to have them. Whatever the circumstances, the children have been born, they need taking care of now they’re here and deserve all the chances in life of everyone else.

TheHateIsNotGood · 11/07/2024 20:33

Nope, not yet, have I seen a Labour Govt F up. Mostly because they've not been in charge for long enough to F up anything yet.

I'm sure they will at some point, after all I've yet to ever meet the Perfect Person, mostly because none exist. Meanwhile I'm quite happy for this Labour Govt to schlepp along and make a sow's purse out of the pig's ear that is the basketcase UK of today.

KindleLindle · 11/07/2024 20:33

I mean, if people are willingly having children purely for the £25 a week, I think they have bigger problems personally. Kids cost a hell of a lot more than £100 a month ...

Weetabbix · 11/07/2024 20:33

Yes it sounds like an absolutely terrible idea to try and reduce poverty amongst children who never asked to be born in the first place 🙄

I am glad that this is high on Labour's priority list. It's a cruel and pointless policy which hasn't had the intended impact anyway.

(Like many Tory policies!)

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 11/07/2024 20:35

How on earth can you construe a perfectly valid internal debate about policy as a fuck up? Regardless of the rights and wrongs of the child benefit policy, the Labour government hasn't actually done anything yet.

Are you just a bit short on analytical skills and desperate to find a reason to criticise?

Bobbotgegrinch · 11/07/2024 20:35

"Discuss"

No, shan't. You can't make me.

Instead, I'm going to discuss "Bad Boys 4: Ride or Die", because I saw it yesterday. It was distinctly average, not a patch on the first one, but and improvement of the 3rd.

I laughed, even chortled at parts of it, found parts of it deeply weird, and got bored by two overlong action scenes.

Martin Lawrence appears to have more than two children in the film, but lives in an absolutely huge house despite a police officers salary. So he doesn't seem to need any additional benefits.

Shit, I'm not talking about that am I.

There was a giant albino alligator in it. Someone got et. This was considered a good thing.

Cuppapuppa · 11/07/2024 20:35

Are you saying that you had relatives that had extra kids so they could get less than 20 quid a week for them???

Exactly, nonsense!

Needmorelego · 11/07/2024 20:35

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow Child Benefit is NOT capped at 2 children.

DanielGault · 11/07/2024 20:36

AzureAnt · 11/07/2024 20:29

I have had hard times but what I didn't do was bring more children into the world when I had no money to support them

Which is a simplistic and childish argument tbh. I used to think like that in my early twenties. Then I grew up. I realised that not everyone fully realises the consequences of their actions, people are products of their upbringings, shit happens to even the best prepared people. I only had the one because it was all I could afford, but I was never caught out either. So I won't cast aspersions on others.
