First Labour f up

The BBC are reporting that there are Labour mps calling for the new government to scrap the limit of 2 children on child benefit

I'm working class and have family members who have had, 7, 5 and several 4 kids. Neither parent worked and the fact that each child got benefit encouraged them to have more, even though they really could not afford it.

so Labour mps want to encourage people who struggle, and those who don't actually, to have more kids...with the impact on the state, housing in the future and the environment..discuss

Erm, a more favourable environment for young, fit migrants who contribute more than they take out of the system

And generous benefits don’t equal population growth

Look at Sweden. Their birth rate is basically the same as ours for all of their family friendly policies.

See also Russia. Russian women get the equivalent of 2 years salary as a bonus from the government for every 2nd or subsequent child and they still have one of the lowest birthrates in the world.

No, i'm not buying that women have babies for the money, sorry. That said, I still things child benefit should be universal, not means tested.

If you think this is the first labour fuck up, YABU. Announcing they want to release a load of prisoners to me was a bigger fuck up.

Removing the cap on child benefit is the least of our problems in this country if you ask me.

What else are they going to do? There's only a few spaces left thanks to years of mismanagement.

TheOneWithUnagi · 11/07/2024 20:08

One again, it isn't child benefit that has a 2 child cap. It's related to UC and similar benefits.

Moonshiners · 11/07/2024 20:06

What does working class mean? Discuss

I would, but I'm down't mines guv

LivingDeadGirlUK · 11/07/2024 20:09

Last time we had a labour government they lifted hundreds of thousands of children out of poverty, it would be amazing if we could do that and reverse some of the damage that has been done by the last government.

As you say yourself OP, the cap in child benefits hasn't stopped your family having more kids, so what is the point in punishing them.

DdraigGoch · 11/07/2024 20:10

DanielGault · 11/07/2024 19:50

There's something particularly irritating about people who end a post with 'discuss'.

Indeed, I'm not a schoolkid and I won't write an essay on command.

FeatherBoas · 11/07/2024 20:10

We don't want to encourage people who can't support them to have more children. Have as many as you like if you can support them and if you're not worried about over populating the planet.

Do you keep yourself well informed about current affairs? I don't think over-populating the planet is a problem.

ghostyslovesheets · 11/07/2024 20:13

Not sure if you missed the election but it was raised repeatedly - in questions from the public and by a range of charities including Gingerbread and CPAG

Lots of people feel it should be scrapped - it impacts on 1 in 10 children and if scrapped would lift half a million out of poverty.

I support it's scrapping - seeing it's impact daily on the families I work with in children's social care.

I would cost less to do than Mr Sunak's National Service plan

SundayTulips · 11/07/2024 19:52

I’d describe this as a difference of opinion on policy, not a fuck up!

So would I
Of course there are going to be MPs who'd like the 2 child cap removed. It's been made clear that it's not a fiscally viable option at the moment
It's not a f up.

That says a lot about the quality of BBc reporting then as there is no 2 child limit on child benefit.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 11/07/2024 20:15

So explain to me how attempting to lift children out of poverty is a fuck up?

Because l just don’t understand. They’ve only been in power 6 days..

I'd go with the later

So only the rich should have large families?

Shit happens, people get pregnant, adults make dumb choices sometimes BUT children suffer - by the way it applies to CB, UC and CTC - a lot of those are paid to working families - who maybe could afford their 3 kids before the cost of living crisis.

Hedgeoffressian · 11/07/2024 20:15

Dont forget the 1.5 million houses to be built on green fields, and earlier release of prisoners.

Children aren’t a right though are they? I would loved to have had a third but I didn’t because we couldn’t afford it.

I'm sorry - what?

You know that child benefit is £16.95 a week* *for children after the first child?

Are you saying that you had relatives that had extra kids so they could get less than 20 quid a week for them???

I am not buying that.

Edited

It's not a cap on child benefit, child benefit can be claimed for all children.

It's something to do with universal credit. But I'm not sure of the amounts.

Its a little more complex than that, our birth rate is now only about 1.5, its needs to be 2 to keep the population level, and as the whole pension and economy is based on a pyramid scheme then we require an expanding population and not a reducing one, and as the majority of the UK wants less immigration then we need to encourage people to have more kids to increase our future work force and tax payer base, without two workers paying NI then there will be no state pension, in fact its worse than that, with the Tories halving NI technically it will now take 4 workers to cover someones pension payments.
Now if everyone agrees they do not want a state pension and they want to pay huge rises themselves to cover the national debt already accrued then we can shrink the population, but as that's not going to happen then we need more kids.

ghostyslovesheets · 11/07/2024 20:18

also define 'fuck up' ? Some MP's having an opinion? It's hardly the Covid PPE scandal or the Rwanda omnishambles is it?

No they are not a right, but they have a right to be properly fed and housed and clothed. This is what the benifit cap takes away from them.

bombaybicycle · 11/07/2024 20:19

Is the OP coming back for the rest of their article?

PoppyCherryDog · 11/07/2024 20:19

DancingPhantomsOnTheTerrace · 11/07/2024 19:58

What's the fuck up? Backbench MPs have called for something you don't agree with, and that there is no sign of the government actually doing?

This. When I watched Starmer’s first press interview this was asked and he very clearly said it wasn’t a priority to address this right now as he wanted to focus on some other things such as NhS and prisons first.

ghostyslovesheets · 11/07/2024 20:19

Hedgeoffressian · 11/07/2024 20:17

I did because we could - then when she was 4 month old my husband left me for another woman - as a working single parent TC's where a godsend -I wouldn't have been able to return to work without them.

Oh. Well you said child benefit in your OP.

Could you maybe come back when you have the facts of what you are actually asking? Because you don't seem to know what you are even asking, or you're at least not making it clear. Then we can give you accurate opinions
