The BBC are reporting that there are Labour mps calling for the new government to scrap the limit of 2 children on child benefit

I'm working class and have family members who have had, 7, 5 and several 4 kids. Neither parent worked and the fact that each child got benefit encouraged them to have more, even though they really could not afford it.

so Labour mps want to encourage people who struggle, and those who don't actually, to have more kids...with the impact on the state, housing in the future and the environment..discuss

There's no point having workers come here who cost us more money.
That is financial destitution for a country.

Agree although there is a way to use migration policy to benefit a country. Some countries do it well

Indeed, so people need to support parent friendly initiatives to make having families a more attractive option instead of moaning about the cost and then crying again when we import people to fill the gap became refuse to fo the first thing.
This country is anti family to a self destructive degree

Do you actually know what happened in parliament yesterday? You may want to look it up. The current government made the right call yesterday. Isn’t it great.

In what way does this relate to my last post? Please only quote me if you want to have a discussion.

Is this right? There is no cap on child benefit but it sounds as though there is :
The two-child benefit cap, which prevents parents from claiming child tax credit or universal credit for more than two children.

The optics on this are not great. No one, absolutely no-one wants to see children in poverty but the number you have is entirely your own choice.

That isn’t what happens. Immigration tends to be fiscally positive.

I mean. This is debatable. And even so, you ignore any cultural or societal effects.

It’s not even debatable because it factually incorrect.

Immigration is net drain this country’s economy. It costs the people here already more than it adds to the economy.

Where are you getting those figures from? Which metrics are being used to measure the impact on the economy?

Never read such a load of old cobblers. Labour MPs want to keep the 2 child limit.

Seven (count them, seven) Labour MP support an SNP motion (note: SNP not Labour) to remove the 2 child limit. Labour opposes this.

I can only assume you are a Tory Party hack trying to stir up shit.

boomermama · 24/07/2024 10:27

There is a misunderstanding about this benefit cap .Child benefit itself is not capped .It's only the UC and Tax Credit Element that is capped and it is tailored to claimants circumstances to take account of high housing costs as outlined below .

This is from Martin Lewis .

There's no set amount you can earn before you stop getting Universal Credit – Because Universal Credit is tailored to your circumstances, there's no hard 'cut-off' point for eligibility. A single person living with their parents may only be able to earn up to £18,000 before they stop being eligible, whereas a single parent of two children, renting in an expensive city, may be able to earn up to £50,000 before they are no longer eligible.

This table shows the amounts you can claim up to each month, depending on your personal circumstances:

Outside London
London
Single
£1,229.42
£1,413.92
Single parent
£1,835.00
£2,110.25
Couple
£1,835.00
£2,110.

FeralSpoonie · 24/07/2024 10:37

Can you explain what you mean by a Labour fuck up? Because the 7 Labour MPs who voted for the SNP amendment seeking to abolish the two child cap have had the whip suspended for six months.

Even if Labour do ultimately decide to abolish the two child cap, it’s not a fuck up simply because you don’t agree with it. Abolishing the cap would reduce child poverty by half a million. Not only is that a good in and of itself, it’s a cost effective way of tackling the issue of child poverty. The tiny minority of people who might have kids solely because of the child benefit they’ll receive are statistically irrelevant.

I thought it was over a million?

No I'm a working class kiddie from one of the most ignored, under privileged parts of Bristol who's worked hard and reaped the benefits, but is annoyed that the middle class guilt of lots of Labour supporters will lead to people having children with the expectation of the state paying for them.

I have family members who are down in the forth generation of unemployment, in an area which basically has had full employment for the last 30years...they feel they don't need to work as the state provides housing, money, health care and anything they need

So you depise your family and then accuse the Labour government of encouraging people to have more children, by not actually getting rid of the 2 child cap, since they aren't are they. So this thread is stuff of nonsense 🙄 oh my, do keep up OP moan about things that are happening if you like but typically Tory , make things up.
