"Prime Minister Keir Starmer recommits to £3 billion a year of military support for Ukraine until 2030/31 and for as long as needed"

That's a huge amount of money for a war that's not going to end anytime soon.
3 BILLION a year!
3 x 1 thousand millions!
Where is this money going to come from? This is in addition to almost £12.5bn in military, humanitarian and economic support already given for Ukraine since Russia’s illegal and miscalculated full scale invasion in February 2022.

UK to stand with Ukraine for as long as it takes, PM to tell NATO

The international community cannot waver in the face of relentless Russian aggression, the Prime Minister will tell NATO today.

As someone in receipt of disability benefits and really hates that it's necessary, I'm all for supporting Ukraine in its fight to remain free and in fighting against the Russian attempts to destroy the better aspects of the West.

£3bn is about 30 hours of UK tax revenue. That ignores local taxes - council tax and business rates.

Ukraine will only lose this war if the West withdraws its support. If the West withdraws its support, we confirm that fighting to keep democracy is not worthwhile. Then, we lose everything.

For those who need to, wake up and smell the coffee. China now has troops in Belarus. China, Russia, NK and Iran will work together to test the West’s resolve over the next three years, all the while strategically building their forces to threaten the West. The US may have to fight on two continents simultaneously, but may choose not to.

It’s time for Europe to focus on defence. It’s time to rearm as the realistic way to hold peace.

Not only that but China is now involved in security and policing in Hungary.

Chinese Police Officers Will Soon Be on Patrol in Hungary

Hungarian and Chinese police officers will carry out joint patrol duties, Sándor Pintér agreed with the Chinese Minister of Public Security in mid-February.

maybe spend what we can actually afford because the principle is good but we cannot be allowing the country to plunge further into debt. This is typical labour behaviour. Didn’t take long for them to start living beyond their means in order to make political statements. God knows what financial state we will be in in a few years if this is setting the tone of their approach!

Exactly, the tories have left the nation in a fine state, now Labour are scuppering it. Bloody lefties.

Good for him !!

Might be just a tad biased as just had our second year anniversary with our fab Ukrainian 'guest' (now firmly part of our family.)

We know in a daily basis what is happening there .. if NATO allies don't support and Putin succeeds Latvia and Estonia will be next. He is a despot and a bully . Never let him win.

I believe Putin is open to negotiation but the West have refused?

Negotiation on what, he had invaded a country which he had no right to, with no provocation. What would the negotiation be 'you can half of OUR country if you stop this war now!

It's very different to the gaza conflict where hammas provoked Israel and still have some of their hostages. Israel have said they will agree a ceasefire if all hostages taken last year are returned unharmed. However, I doubt Hammas will or can do this.

Russia isn't interested in just the Eastern areas of Ukraine @@TreadLight

"Russia needs to prepare to seize the entire territory of Ukraine after Moscow and Kiev sign a peace treaty and conclude the war, said Deputy Chairman of the Security Council Dmitry Medvedev.
Even after signing the papers and taking the defeat, the remaining part of the radicals [in Ukraine] after the regrouping of forces sooner or later will return to power, inspired by the Western enemies of Russia. And then the time will come to finally crush the shit, - Medvedev wrote in the telegram channel.
According to him, at this point, Russia will have to "bend a long steel nail into the lid of the Bandera quasi-state" coffin, as well as destroy the remains of its bloody heritage and return the remaining lands to the fold of the Russian land.
But the enemies of Russia will not go anywhere after that. They will save strength and wait for a new convenient reason for the destruction of our country. We must be ready for future battles to protect the Fatherland," Medvedev stressed."

But wants to cut down on the disabled bill in the uk wow

The 'disabled bill' and national security are not mutually exclusive.. it doesn't work like that..

The disabled bill is enormous because the Tories fucked the NHS ..

Get someone in need of a couple of knee replacement fixed and they are no longer disabled.

Get someone who needs an autism diagnosis through the system and they can seek work with reasonable adjustments.

Instead of selling parts of the NHS off to private American companies for profit .

THIS IS WHERE THE MONEY GOES .. (to their shareholders) .obscene

Where’s the support for Gaza?

Why only Ukraine?

Israel isn't Russia in this false equivalence.

@hamstersarse What negotiations would these be?

Give me half your country and I'll stop murdering you?

It would be funny if it wasn't so fucking tragic

This is nonsense. It’s a falsehood that continues to circulate however many times it’s shot down.

Labour since WWII has inherited better economies than it has left. That’s the false basis of the claim.

I have been a conservative voter my whole life, up until Brexshit. I was surprised to learn that Labour have not necessarily inherited stronger economies and in fact, it is the other way around in many instances. I suggest you conduct further analysis of your figures.

Backwoods57 · 11/07/2024 16:29

Yet more money and people being thrown into the meat grinder for no good reason. Why is NATO getting involved

ACynicalDad · 11/07/2024 16:32

This isn't about Ukraine, it's about keeping Putin in check and frankly I'm far from convinced the Western powers shouldn't put boots on the ground.

Scammersarescum · 11/07/2024 16:32

Not a Starmer fan, in fact I intensely dislike him but he is right to commit to Ukraine.

For all our sakes.

For anyone who thinks that Russia isn't trying to attack:

https://edition.cnn.com/2024/07/11/politics/us-germany-foiled-russian-assassination-plot/index.html

US intelligence discovered earlier this year that the Russian government planned to assassinate the chief executive of a powerful German arms manufacturer that has been producing artillery shells and military vehicles for Ukraine, according to five US and western officials familiar with the episode.
The plot was one of a series of Russian plans to assassinate defense industry executives across Europe who were supporting Ukraine’s war effort, these sources said. The plan to kill Armin Papperger, a white-haired goliath who has led the German manufacturing charge in support of Kyiv, was the most mature.
When the Americans learned of the effort, they informed Germany, whose security services were then able to protect Papperger and foil the plot. A high-level German government official confirmed that Berlin was warned about the plot by the US.

A delve back into historical data shows that Labour has largely had positive returns when it's in office.

It is a disproportionate and unnecessary amount.

I don’t buy the domino theory so often used to support Ukraine. Yes, if we had allowed Putin to invade Ukraine at little cost, he might have thought of venturing further. But, right now, he would happily settle for 20% of Ukraine, at least some of which is more Russian than Ukrainian in terms of language and culture.

The great powers (the U.S and China) may need a more global view, but we don’t, especially if Europe won’t come along for the ride. The nations who should be investing a lot more are Germany (especially) and Poland, not the UK.

I find the grandstanding of the establishment over Ukraine quite nauseating when so many are dying here through lack of basic medical care and schools are falling apart. We might still be a rich (ish) country on paper, but that is because of the super wealthy. On a median income basis, we are really quite average.

We should pay our fair share on Ukraine, but no more.

Can I remind you of a pp PizzaHearts point:

Ukraine hosted nuclear weapons at the moment of Soviet Unions collapse and then agreed to transfer them to Russia in exchange for assurances from Russia, UK and USA to respect Ukrainian independence and sovereignty in existing borders. UK is part of this treaty. UK promised to guarantee Ukrainian independence and sovereignty.

Had we and the USA not convinced Ukraine to hand their nuclear weapons over to russia Ukraine would not have been invaded.
We guaranteed their sovereignty, under those circumstances how can anyone believe we are doing too much. We really aren't doing enough.

blueshoes · 11/07/2024 20:57

I'd be happy for £3 billion of military aid to go to Ukraine every year, many times more in fact. And pony up more taxes to fund it, if necessary.

I would rather pay any amount than for my son to have to fight the Russians on UK soil.

Isitsixoclockalready · 11/07/2024 21:02

Putin won't stop with Ukraine.

WinterMorn · 11/07/2024 07:37

Ukraine needs our support. The cost of a Putin victory will be far more than financial. Should he decide to turn his attention to a NATO member then all bets are off. Funding Ukraine now is an investment in all our futures.

Agreed!
