"Prime Minister Keir Starmer recommits to £3 billion a year of military support for Ukraine until 2030/31 and for as long as needed"

That's a huge amount of money for a war that's not going to end anytime soon.
3 BILLION a year!
3 x 1 thousand millions!
Where is this money going to come from? This is in addition to almost £12.5bn in military, humanitarian and economic support already given for Ukraine since Russia’s illegal and miscalculated full scale invasion in February 2022.

UK to stand with Ukraine for as long as it takes, PM to tell NATO

The international community cannot waver in the face of relentless Russian aggression, the Prime Minister will tell NATO today.

We should have referendum on this..

PopSockette · 11/07/2024 22:52

Crazy amounts of money to continue a war that is being lost and they are talking about conscripting 18 years olds.

Who is talking about conscripting18 year olds in the UK? Do you have a link please?

https://www.reddit.com/r/UkraineRussiaReport/comments/1dzpuqp/uapovexusambassadortonatoivodaalder/ - it's in Ukraine he says there should be total mobilization from Ukrainians before any other country should need to have boots on the ground.

Something more reliable than a Reddit link that tells me there is mature content that I can't access without using the app (which I don't have) would be helpful! Ta.

Eta: I managed to read a bit of it. Nothing about UK conscripting 18 year olds. So not sure of relevance to a thread about UK's funding of Ukraine?

Ex US Ambassador to NATO Ivo Daalder exhorts Ukraine to think about how important this war is for them, and to start mobilizing 18 year olds. He states that NATO troops will never be deployed in the future if Ukraine does not first mobilize it's youth for war.

We also need the food the Ukraine provide to Europe.

I never mentioned the UK NATO seems to be pushing Ukraine to total mobilization of their people including their youths. As the ex US Ambassador to NATO says it's currently being fought by soldiers with an average age of 40 years.Old people pushing teenagers into the slaughter, not a good look.

Well I agree with you there 100% about not sending teenagers to war, but what you posted appears to be about what an Ex US Ambassador to NATO has said? So this is not coming from NATO itself? - but it is hard to properly comment without having access to a reliable link.

DucklingSwimmingInstructress · 11/07/2024 23:27

You mean like Putin pushing over 500,000 of his people into the slaughter, young and old?

He was quite clear on the Twitter link he wants total mobilization from Ukrainians before he says we can consider sending our own children. But it appears many Ukrainian men quite understandably don't want to fight.

But it his personal view that Ukraine should conscript under 25s not NATO's view?

blueshoes · 11/07/2024 23:49

Why do we care what the Ex US Ambassador to NATO says? Are we scraping the bottom of the barrel to find something negative about NATO and Ukraine?

Good point. This is not NATO's view at all.

We should have referendum on this..

We should never have another referendum again, IMO. We have a Parliamentary Democracy. We just gave KS an enormous majority and it's for his government to make the decisions.
Putin sent his goons to murder people in Salisbury. It's only by tremendous luck that the toxin didn't end up in the water supply killing thousands. They also murdered a man in cold blood in a London sushi restaurant. He needs to be reined in.

duckfordinner · 12/07/2024 08:58

@beguilingeyes KS didn't get "enormous" majority - only 33.7% voted for him. In lots of places Reform came second. His mandate is weak.

BrigadierEtienneGerard · 12/07/2024 09:24

Thoroughly sound idea.

His mandate is fucking enormous! It's seats in the House that count. All other figures are meaningless.

The "popular vote" figure is of no more relevance than the number of left-handed red-haired Welsh who voted Labour.

Only a 291 seat majority. Looks like a very weak mandate to me. 🤦‍♂️

Coming second in a FPTP system means you're nowhere.
Reform have a measly 5 MPs. Their vote share hasn't really improved since they were UKIP or the Brexit Party,.or whatever Farage's latest scheme is.

Wow.. What a pile on! Haha..I expected it from vigilantes.. Apparently, only your opinion is right, isnt it? Ignore everyone else at your peril.. Even on mumsnet 47% are voting against it but you keep staying in your echo chamber.

Which makes it a majority of people in favour of supporting Ukraine. How does that grab you 🙂

Not least because so many other political parties, including the one that came second, also favour financial support to Ukraine.

Watching people who are in the minority on the issue whine impotently about it is funny, though.

Nice try..but doesnt grab me at all.. .53 vs 47 are not that different. Still 5 days and 20 hours to go?
