"Prime Minister Keir Starmer recommits to £3 billion a year of military support for Ukraine until 2030/31 and for as long as needed"

That's a huge amount of money for a war that's not going to end anytime soon.
3 BILLION a year!
3 x 1 thousand millions!
Where is this money going to come from? This is in addition to almost £12.5bn in military, humanitarian and economic support already given for Ukraine since Russia’s illegal and miscalculated full scale invasion in February 2022.

UK to stand with Ukraine for as long as it takes, PM to tell NATO

The international community cannot waver in the face of relentless Russian aggression, the Prime Minister will tell NATO today.

But wants to cut down on the disabled bill in the uk wow

Impossiblethree · 11/07/2024 07:33

Absolutely ridiculous.

WinterMorn · 11/07/2024 07:37

Ukraine needs our support. The cost of a Putin victory will be far more than financial. Should he decide to turn his attention to a NATO member then all bets are off. Funding Ukraine now is an investment in all our futures.

broccolienthusiast · 11/07/2024 07:47

You do realise that if Ukraine falls we are all fucked right?

rewilded · 11/07/2024 07:52

That is a worry for sure. It will stoke things up and as our own defence is weak will also make us a target.

For what reason do you think that?

For what reason do you think that?

Because Putin is unlikely to stop at just Ukraine.

Unfortunately, it seems that many people, including the OP, don’t realise that at all. They can’t see beyond their own back yard or limited self interest. What the recent election has shown is the woeful grasp that a sizeable chunk of the populace have when it comes to geo-politics and the concept of a world behind the UK. It’s very worrying.

FinalCeleryScheme · 11/07/2024 08:01

Supporting Ukraine is a bigger priority than anything else.

Starmer’s willingness to continue support is a very good thing.

Xhakalaka · 11/07/2024 08:01

If Putin gets Ukraine he'll move further west and our democracies and lives are fucked. We're not just protecting Ukraine's sovereign state we're protecting our own.

With respect, do you not think we are a target already, given all that’s gone on over the last few years? The announcement from Starmer will be water off a ducks back to Russia. The mindset there is totally different.

WinterMorn · 11/07/2024 08:03

@FinalCeleryScheme Yes! I don’t know why people can’t see this. If Putin really decides to up the ante then the NHS, potholes, inheritance tax and the like will be the least of our worries.

First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist.
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

We are a few years off WWIII. If we support Ukraine to win we might avert it. If we were invaded we would want and need the same support.

Glitterybee · 11/07/2024 08:07

Where’s the support for Gaza?

Why only Ukraine?

MrsKwazi · 11/07/2024 08:08

We need to support Ukraine. It costs a bomb (literally) but they are the buffer and bleeding for it.

It is an insane amount if money and we (and our children) will pay for it. Blame Putin.

I was waiting for this. It’s a thread about Ukraine.

PregnantWithHorrors · 11/07/2024 08:08

Assisting Ukraine militarily is in the UK self interest. YABU OP.

Arewealljustloosingtheplot · 11/07/2024 08:09

Beyond ridiculous and it’s only going to get worse. We can’t afford this.

So what would you suggest we do then?

so true.

Ukraine is losing, they're not going to win so we're just pouring money into a hopeless cause.

Thankfully those making the key decisions feel otherwise

Ukraine is losing, they're not going to win so we're just pouring money into a hopeless cause.

Or we’re buying time to build up our armed forces, which is exactly what government ministers have said from the start.

God I wish people wouldn’t just react to a single headline and actually read more broadly. This same thread is posted daily now.

MySocksAreDotty · 11/07/2024 08:12

We cannot let Ukraine fail, for the sake of our own safety. At the moment all we have to give is money, compared to money and our kids lives if we were in a real European war.
