To think it’s a lot of mental effort to keep up with gender these days?

My 18 yo daughter recently started work at a pizza place and she’s been telling me how much more she likes this place than the last pizza place she worked at.

She didn’t want to bring food home from the first place, partly because she didn’t trust the industrial pizza dough that came on pallets, but mostly because it was all teenage boys working there and they didn’t wear gloves to prepare the food. The new place is better because they do wear gloves to prepare the food and it’s not all teenage boys.

I was a little confused, because all the names she’s mentioned, pretty much, are boy’s names, Milo is the only one I remember, but it’s all been boy’s names except for one person with a girl’s name, who she calls her work best friend. I comment and she’s, like, OMG, don’t make assumptions, it’s a very gender diverse place. But she does agree that females tend to be more hygiene aware, and we leave it like that.

But it leaves me uncomfortable. She clearly knows that these ‘boys’ are in fact girls, but can’t bring herself to say it, although she acknowledges by saying that these ‘boys’ are clean whereas she didn’t trust the ‘other boys’ to wash their hands.

What kind of mental gymnastics does that take?

This is why kids these days are so great, they’re so accepting of each other and understand that we’re all on a spectrum. It’s us oldies who get confused, but it’s good to have an open mind and be positive about progress and kindness.

You're confused. We're not.

The whole gender identity thing is irrelevant here.

Some people have better hygiene than others. There’s plenty of clean men and grotty women.

Gloves are no cleaner than clean hands; and can actually be dirtier as they give a false sense of security so people wash hands less frequently.

The point is she was, in essence, telling me how great it was not to have to work with teenage boys because females are more hygienic, in her opinion.

So the gender identity thing is totally relevant.

I can't decide whether it's actually kind to support people's delusions.

I don't understand it. Its not that my mind is closed, its full.

Catza · 10/07/2024 18:22

It takes exactly zero mental gymnastics. I don't need to use any pronouns when I speak to the person directly. I use their name. The rest is none of my concern and has no influence on my life whatsoever. Seems like your daughter took a similar approach so you are creating a problem where there isn't one.

YouJustDoYou · 10/07/2024 18:01

Because teenage boys

If they can't be trusted to wash hands and keep things clean a pair of gloves will make zero difference 🤷‍♀️

RedToothBrush · 10/07/2024 18:24

Talking bollocks doesn't require mental gymnastics. It's require a lack of willingness to speak the truth.

JustTalkToThem · 10/07/2024 18:26

Your daughter seems cool. You should be proud.

It’s a bit odd to be open minded about gender identity but so closed minded about gender stereotypes. Perhaps one type of empathy is more fashionable.

Either way I wouldn’t waste any mental gymnastics on it.

Sorry you're confused ☹️ have you tried looking at some KS1 biology books? There's a Prime day on Amazon coming up, they might have some on sale.

I don’t give it a moment’s thought really, but I appreciate this comes from a position of privilege where this nonsense is not a part of my life at all (no children to be indoctrinated in school, a non-woke workplace etc.)

Men are men, and women are women.

I would rather piss myself than use a unisex toilet (nice try calling it ‘gender neutral’…).

That’s it.

My daughter is super cool, and I am very proud.

Still confused at her mental gymnastics to call girls boys while acknowledging that they are girls for hygiene purposes.

Super easy - hope that helps!

You're confused. Not all sexed stereotypes are bad, some happen to be true for the majority of people.

GinAndBeerIt · 10/07/2024 18:45

As far as I'm concerned, there are only two sexes.
Male and female.
That's it, no gymnastics here.

Revelatio · 10/07/2024 18:45

I would say grubby teenage boys are definitely a gender stereotype.

Riapia · 10/07/2024 18:49

If they are trans boys/men they will have to stand around with their hands down their pants to be authentic. So the need for gloves.

PersonallyVictimizedByReginaGeorge · 10/07/2024 18:49

Yeh even if I bought into it, I'd find it hard to remember. I had to laugh at johnnie ligan being interviewed about barbie vampire before the eurviision. He kept calling her 'her' and was educated by the interviewer and he said something like 'sorry I can't remember to call her they" 😅

CollyBobble · 10/07/2024 18:52

My children have left home but I certainly wouldn't entertain that nonsense under my roof.

If any of mine started talking about makes as if they were females or vice versa they would be taken to task about it and told in no uncertain terms that they are wrong.

Thankfully no one in my family believes in all this bullshit about woke gender nonsense.

maddening · 10/07/2024 18:53

BarHumbugs · 10/07/2024 17:51

So your daughter works with a bunch of people with boys names who she calls boys and you're confused as you're convinced they're girls because they wash their hands... It does sound exhausting to be you.

No the daughter said she doesn't work with boys however they all have boys names. So they are girls who pretend they are boys. And changing names does not impact traits seen in one's sex so as these are girls they are more observant of hygiene standards even with short hair, a bound breast and a boys name.
