To wish Sir Keir and his wife would not hold hands when working

They've arrived in Washington DC on official business clutching hands like the Macrons, the Obamas and the Sussexes.

AiBU to find it a bit cringey?

And before anyone asks, yes I do have bigger things to worry about but I fancy a chat.

Been together 35 years and still hold hands. What’s wrong with it?

Grin

Nothing is wrong with holding hands, nothing at all! However, If you read the thread the point actually is when on an official capacity (Labour, Tory, Green, snp any old political groups for the 'Tory HQ' parrots at the back), on work related duties it looks silly to hold your beloved's hand as if you're out having a lovely wander about together.
Females leaders don't tend to do it do they?

IClaudine · 18/07/2024 10:01

The hand holding is of zero importance. What matters is what Starmer does in office. He is already looking far more impressive than the last five PMs.

newnamethanks · 18/07/2024 10:22

The State Opening of Parliament is work for the King and Queen. Complaints about the low standard of behaviour, ie hand-holding on a state occasion, by the Monarch and his Queen should probably be addressed to Buckingham Palace rather than bitched about on MN. I'm sure a letter of apology will shortly be arriving through your letterbox.

Edited

He is 'looking far more impressive'. How? Tidier hair do? He is a wet lettuce who will be walked all over by his own party nevermind world leaders. Doesn't look or sound like a man who will be running any shows going forward.

RishisLeavingDo · 18/07/2024 11:13

He is hosting European leaders at Blenheim Palace for the European Political Community today

RobinStrike · 18/07/2024 11:21

@Janiie I don't think anyone who has risen to being DPP and running the CPSfor years, and then when he decides to become an MP at 50 ends up leader of his party and Prime Minister Minister within 9 years can be considered a pushover. Politics is a cutthroat world. He's also managed to force Jeremy Corbyn and his acolytes out of the party. I understand that for some reason you think he looks wet, but I think you will find you are wrong. As for Angela Rayner I think becoming Deputy PM is an amazing achievement. But it isn't one that Keir Starmer has necessarily supported. The Cabinet apart from her is very much Starmer's choice and she will be outmanoeuvred if she tries to force anything through.

Your view of him as weak is really odd when you look at how he’s taken control of the Labour Party and remoulded it (whether in a way you like or not). It’s Tories who have been walked over by party factions.

prettybird · 18/07/2024 11:31

As I suspected: complete and utter double standards Hmm

What I can't work out is if they're completely unaware of it, or if they're being deliberately obtuse, or if they are so blinded by their hatred of all things Labour that they can't think clearly (which goes full circle back to the first option) Confused

I see the grapes have not sweetened.

Never will, they’ll turn to vinegar.

Janiie 's law of permissible handholding in a simple diagram.

I actually think he comes across as quite intelligent and thoughtful. He may be quiet but not necessarily a bad thing. (And I wasn’t sure about him for a long time)

How funny to actually go to the trouble of doing an odd child like diagram.

If you read the thread you will see it isn't just Starmer it is any politician holding hands whilst on official business, you must have missed it (!)but i include Sunak etc in this. Do keep up.

That 'hand hold' by KC and QC is certainly not the average handhold we are talking about it is. Is that how you and your dp walk about??🤣

It's a Venn diagram. Nothing odd about it.

If the King and Queen are allowed to hold hands on a formal state occasion, so are other world leaders. Anything else is rank hypocrisy.

Nanny0gg · 18/07/2024 12:45

BeaQuiet · 10/07/2024 10:28

this is a you problem not a them problem

Do you speak like that in real life?

No hang ups. Happy to hold hands with DH now and then but not at work.

I agree with you

However - I'm old school. Could never imagine Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip holding hands and I'm glad the new K&Q and the Wales' don't either

(The 'hand-holding' at the State Opening of Parliament isn't bloody hand-holding, It's escorting (chivalry) and entirely different!)

I think it's another US import but I'm not sure when it started here.

Ah right a Venn diagram! Gotcha.

He is in his late 70s. Has had major surgery which even though months ago at that age can leave one wobbly. He has recently had chemo. Maybe he needed a supportive hand hold. Even if he didn't I repeat that their handhold was nothing like the ones we are talking about. I await your next 'Venn diagram' in excitement Confused.

newnamethanks · 18/07/2024 13:03

Well, sometimes, but we generally leave the robes and jewels at home. They're really heavy, as our late Queen knce remarked.

pointythings · 18/07/2024 13:05

@janiie you can repeat your hypocrisy as much as you want. Doesn't make it fact.
You can whinge about world leaders holding hands as much as you want. Doesn't make it not the convention.

prettybird · 18/07/2024 13:21

It would appear that chivalry is not for commoners Hmm and yes, I do know the origin of the word but it's not how it is used in the current day Wink

Don't expect logic to be applied. Confused

pointythings · 18/07/2024 14:03

I don't. I do hower find it amusing to see the increasingly Olympic standard contortions some posters go through to argue why holding hands is fiiiiiine for people they approve of but never for our PM.

They're not 'holding hands' FGS

Retired65 · 18/07/2024 14:15

The King and Queen's hand holding was not a bit like Sir Keir Starmer's hand holding with his wife!

prettybird · 18/07/2024 14:18

Grin @pointythings True Wink

That's why I felt the need to add the comment about knowing the origin of the word "chivalry" before one of them tried to use a "gotcha" on me. Halo

prettybird · 18/07/2024 14:25

Given that Charles and Camilla are never off duty Wink, the following article is disgraceful Shock Can we sack them? Wink
