To wish Sir Keir and his wife would not hold hands when working

They've arrived in Washington DC on official business clutching hands like the Macrons, the Obamas and the Sussexes.

AiBU to find it a bit cringey?

And before anyone asks, yes I do have bigger things to worry about but I fancy a chat.

I'm not entirely sure you'll be able to handle this but when I've gone to see DH at work and vise versa we've kissed each other hello and goodbye 🤭.

Ok yes you've said a few times now that you disagree wirh me, just stop quoting me perhaps and ignore me?

However. Image counts. These leaders have got to look the part and he does not. Think even Corbyn looked like he was made of stronger stuff than dear Keir.

Confused Are you sure you know who Starmer is???

He looks prime ministerial.

What an unkind thing to say. I had great role models and a happy marriage. My DH is quite tactile in the house. I just personally think it's as if it's done for effect. When I was younger and saw people hold hands, I often thought it was quite possessive. I walked home with a couple holding hands when I was about 20 and felt uncomfortable.

But it is not done for effect, why would you think that?

It is fine not to want to do it yourself, but it is rather strange to project a negative interpretation onto others.

Houseplanter · 11/07/2024 09:21

I wonder if Lady Starmer will hold his hand to take him to see the football on Sunday.

When he's finally finished jetting around maybe he'll crack on

Do you want the UK leader to be the only one not attending?? It is not 'jetting around' to attend a NATO summit. Embarrassing if you don't understand why he is there.

BustingBaoBun · 11/07/2024 19:03

Should he not have gone to the NATO summit? Should he not be on the world stage with other Leaders of countries?
Some posters on here talk like it is a fun freebie holiday. He is representing our country as PM, I appreciate that's difficult for some to stomach.

BeaQuiet · 10/07/2024 10:28

this is a you problem not a them problem

Do you speak like that in real life?

No hang ups. Happy to hold hands with DH now and then but not at work.

If DH and I worked in the same building / vicinity and therefore travelled there together, we'd likely hold hands without thinking while walking in. Some couples do actually just hold hands when out and about.

If we worked in the same place we'd probably not be all over each other but we wouldn't just stop having that affection for one another.

Janiie · 11/07/2024 19:26

'Some posters on here talk like it is a fun freebie holiday. He is representing our country as PM'

Exactly. Hold hands on fun freebie hols not representing our country as PM.

I don't suppose Victoria eats very much anyway.

Why on earth not? Are you implying an eating disorder?
She looks a normal size.
Dear god, can women NEVER be left alone from criticism of their bodies?

I feel like couples that do this are over compensating for something… a bit like those “happy” couples that plaster their entire relationship over social media only to break up a week later.

Holding hands...which is for the couple, and a sign of affection, is rather different from posting on social media, which is for show only; no pleasure for the couple at all. Media, promotion, for public consumption.

CarolinaInTheMorning · 11/07/2024 20:20

It's not political.

Of course it's political. I think the original post was meant to draw criticism of the Starmers from their natural detractors. I saw a lot of this with the Obamas. Criticism for minor things (sleeveless dresses, bare legs for her, tan suit, feet on desk, jacket off in oval office for him) that really was designed to start pile-ons from people who didn't like their politics.

Where government leaders are concerned, it's almost all political.

Shame all the other leaders and past PM's do it too then. I know I know you don't like any of them doing it.

It's a nothing criticism. It'll carry on happening and doesn't matter.

Spirallingdownwards · 11/07/2024 20:24

You do you then and let others do what they want. I don't find it cringey. I find it more cringey that a middle aged women feels the need to have a chat about this. But again you are entitled to do you.

And yes people do frequently use the phrase this is a you problem in real life. Maybe you have no real life friends hence needing to chat on here.

I agree it is political.

It is about dragging them down for the little things.

So @Janiie , did you think Boris Johnson looked Prime Ministerial?
I need a good laugh, so looking forward to your answer.

Yep he looked like a leader, he might have had messy hair not quite Keir's carefully brylcreamed hairdo but he certainly didn't look scared of his own shadow.

That's a bit mean. Who cares if she's just chilling online having a chat? Isn't that what we are all doing?

BustingBaoBun · 11/07/2024 21:14

I think we must be talking about two different people... he doesn't bluster or come out with endless soundbites or nonsense Latin phrases or Peppa Pig twaddle like Boris... I'll give you that, but frightened of his own shadow is a highly amusing criticism.

Johnson doesn't look scared of a seven course meal, a few bottles of wine and a large back hander from some dodgy Russian, either.

Thanks for the laugh, by the way.
