To wish Sir Keir and his wife would not hold hands when working

They've arrived in Washington DC on official business clutching hands like the Macrons, the Obamas and the Sussexes.

AiBU to find it a bit cringey?

And before anyone asks, yes I do have bigger things to worry about but I fancy a chat.

If that's the worst habit they have, I don't care. Holding hands with your partner isn't bad it's quite normal.

Not while you're working, especially in a very senior position.

And as has been said 500 times on this thread already, it is normal for world leaders to hold hands with their spouses on these occasions. You may not like it, but it is. When you're a new world leader on the stage, you go along with the conventions.

ZiriForGood · 15/07/2024 19:06

Unelected spouses are part of the protocol - they typically have a charity oriented program, and their presence/absence frames some meetings as more worked focused and some as more social focused.
On top of that, being top representative of a country often means lots of traveling, so they are less separated when they take part of their home with them.

Queen Camilla just reached for King Charles's hand at the State Opening of Parliament. I'm guessing they didn't as your permission OP? So I'm reporting it to you for your approval or otherwise. Terrible isn't it?

It’s rather sweet.

prettybird · 17/07/2024 14:00

It’s rather sweet.

....but according to some on here, unforgivably unprofessional Hmm

Can we sack them? Wink

prettybird · 17/07/2024 17:53

This is from today: outrageous behaviour from someone "working, especially in a very senior position." (to quote @marshmallowfinder ) Shock

Maybe they'll re-adjust their opinion now and cut Starmer (and Obama and Biden and Macron and, and, and.... Wink) some slack Wink

Tory HQ Labour critics seem to have gone rather quiet the past couple of days.

Honestly I've no idea why folk can't spot the difference. This hand hold isnt a Sussex style/ott romantic hand clasp one does whilst on a date is it?! It's more of a supportive gesture imo. I mean it isn't as if KC has had major surgery and treatment recently is it? Oh wait..

Labour critics 🥱. Have you rtft hun? It has been said repeatedly that whether Sunak or Keir whilst representing the country it isn't the time to hold your dps hand. Female politicians don't seem to to do it. Maybe they do I just can't recall Theresa May or even Thatcher dragging their beloveds along behind them.

I don't think @IClaudine is German...

No, 'hun' is used on mn in a friendly way for those who miss the point. You must've seen hun on sm? Do you think everyone who uses it thinks people are Germans? How odd. Not that there's anything wrong with being German obvs <short for obviously>.but 'hun' in that context referring to Germans would be offensive tbh. What about lol? Lots of love? ?Think there's an abbreviation help list if you Google.

You prefer celtic what? Confused

Anyway. As many have said whether TORY OR LABOUR or any other political parties hand holding on official business looks daft.

KC <post cancer treatment> and QC holding hands in that manner looks completely different.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 17/07/2024 21:14

I think it’s nice. I think it’s a good shift in the way world leaders behave.

Gen X world leaders are the best too (Keir is older end of Gen X I think but his wife is younger)

You obviously don't know any Scottish folk!

Think there's an explanation of the significance of the term you used in relation to Scotland if you Google. Sweetie.

Starmer is a Boomer! He was born in 1962, end of Boomer generation is 1964

prettybird · 17/07/2024 22:17

Has anyone managed to find a picture of Starmer or any world leader for that matter Wink "holding hands" with their partner actually in the NATO meetings during formal proceeding or during their smaller formal meetings with other world leaders? Hmm

If they can, I'll revise my opinion Wink

Quite, I'm early Gen X and I was born in 1968.

BIWI · 17/07/2024 23:01

'hun' is never used in a friendly way on Mumsnet. And @Janiie knows that full well.
