To wish Sir Keir and his wife would not hold hands when working

They've arrived in Washington DC on official business clutching hands like the Macrons, the Obamas and the Sussexes.

AiBU to find it a bit cringey?

And before anyone asks, yes I do have bigger things to worry about but I fancy a chat.

On the rare occasions I have taken any notice of how leaders and their spouses conduct themselves on joint appearances I have seen that most of them do hold hands. Just out of interest did Melania hold Trump's hand when they did appearances as President and First Lady ?, I always get the impression that she loathes him. She was nowhere to be seen during his recent court troubles and even when he was in office she seemed to be doing things under duress.

I'm showing my age a bit here 😁but does anyone remember a TV series called Hart to Hart? It starred Stefanie Powers and Robert Wagner as a married couple working as detectives? Anyway, that's what comes to mind whenever I see these couples who work together and go everywhere hand in hand 😆

I was just saying today that they should do a remake of this with Grant Shapps and Penny Mardaunt, pootling around the Home Counties solving crimes with their faithful shaggy mutt Bojo.

I bet his wife thinks she’s in some parallel universe! I know I would, one day working in the NHS the next meeting fellow puppets of the most powerful
people in the world! I mean who really runs the world?!

Oh FFS, can we stop pretending this is a Cinderella rags to riches story.

I find it nice. Not at all cringey.

When Trump held Theresa May’s hand that was proper cringey.

I quite liked it when Trump tried to hold Melania’s had and she slapped it away. 😆

She slapped it away. There are multiple occasions on video.

Did Melania just slap Donald Trump’s hand away?

This video apparently shows Melania Trump slapping her husband's hand away as he tries to grab it in Israel.Subscribe: http://trt.world/subscribeLivestream: ...

It looks ridiculous at their age. Harry and Meghan were the only royals holding hands during the late queen's funeral etc.

If Victoria Starmer is still employed by the NHS I hope she's not getting extra paid leave because of being PM's wife.

BIossomtoes · 10/07/2024 12:49

It seems that half the posters on this thread live in a cupboard. These international leaders’ events always include spouses and almost all of them hold hands when walking from A to B. How can so many of you not seen this before?

lemonmeringueno3 · 10/07/2024 12:49

I'm sure they're told to do it. Like leaders are told to take their tie off and roll up their sleeves. But I still like it. Like seeing love in the world.

My parents held hands into their 90s. It looked delightful and moving, not ridiculous. Love is never ridiculous.

Rightsraptor · 10/07/2024 12:51

It isn't 'seeing love' though. It's playing to who they imagine their audience to be.

Youcannevertelltownfromtown · 10/07/2024 12:51

I find it a bit irritating because I think it’s overdone at this point. It’s like the photo ops where politicians have rolled their shirtsleeves up to show they are getting stuck in and down to business and are hard at work. Or have a hard hat on.
But it kind of makes me laugh because it makes me think of the aliens in the Simpsons who take over the bodies of Bill Clinton and Bob Dole and then confuse everyone by walking around holding hands all the time.
Speaking of which, I’ve never assumed anything about a politician’s marriage based on how they present themselves in public because of the Clintons.

Hayliebells · 10/07/2024 12:52

I don't understand why it's cringy? It's not like they're colleagues, they're husband and wife. Married people hold hands sometimes.

whynotwhatknot · 10/07/2024 12:54

is se still going to be a nurse?

Not at work they don't. It just looks silly. They aren't teens on a date.

What's the age at which one should stop holding hands with their spouse in public, then? Just for reference.

pikkumyy77 · 10/07/2024 12:57

OverheardInLidl · 10/07/2024 12:27

Agreed. My mum used to say, couples who act overly affectionate in public constantly are usually trying to hide the fact that there are problems in the marital home.

True but also so very british! Who is to say what is over vs under?

I think it's lovely and sets a good example particularly to men.

I agree.

Zara and Mike Tindall were holding hands too.

I thought this was a thread about political figures?

Yeah, it was nice. Married 65 years and still holding hands can’t be bad.

Likewhatever · 10/07/2024 13:06

I agree with you. It just looks weird and unprofessional to me. if being PM is a profession. Not losing sleep about it though.
