Unlike Tony Blair, he comes from a working class background - his siblings would still call themselves working class.

As a very bright lawyer, he could have sought a path which made him rich quickly but instead chose human rights which isn’t an easy route to take and he’s defended ‘the little guy’ against corporations. He’s also anti-death penalty.

Ok, he’s a Sir, and I’ve heard people (perhaps not unreasonably) question why the leader of the Labour Party would have a title like that. But he earned it through work for the criminal justice system.

On the face of it, it seems as though he deserves a chance.

I would much rather have him as PM than a former Bullingdon club member who used to burn money in front of homeless people for the fun of it.

I was very happy to see a focus on solar energy in the Observer today, but not sure why they can't add panels to existing buildings in city centres where the need for power must be pretty high? Looking out over the rooftops of central London, there are hardly any that I can see. I can understand why covering agricultural land in solar panels is unpopular, but would anyone object to them of roofs of office blocks?

Maybe they could do this as well.

I wonder if there's a reason that won't work.

TessTimoney · 14/07/2024 11:02

Once again the sheep have voted for the wolf! He is ruthlessly ambitious for power. If you know how he treated his former mentor, Jeremy Corbin, you'll realise he is not to be trusted.

HRTQueen · 14/07/2024 11:05

what are you talking about Jeremy Corbyn was his mentor

😆

so what he is ambitious he is also extremely intelligent, hard working, diligent and dedicated

His name is Corbyn.

I’m ruthlessly ambitious for him to have power too. It’s high time we saw it used for the benefit of the country.

I don't understand why new schools, hospitals offices prisons, and leisure centres etc aren't built with solar panels.

I don't know much about the Labour Party but you sound as if you know even less. "Mentor"?!

I have a suspicion that the economics are against it. There’s not a lot of sunshine in the UK, relatively. And the sunk costs of panels and equipment plus the costs of service and repair may be prohibitive.

Happy to be wrong though.

verdantverdure · 14/07/2024 12:38

My parents have them on their place in the New Forest and they pay for themselves over the life of the building.

It's a long term investment that keeps paying off.

My dad says it works when there's daylight, and there's daylight every day.

I'll tell you my opinion in 10 years @verdantverdure. I hope SKS will be a great success, and lift us all. But I'll wait for the proof.

FinalCeleryScheme · 16/07/2024 21:31

Oh, but thank god the chaos is over! No more resignations of those in charge of countries for a start…

oops.

They just need sunlight. Electricity is still produced on cloudy days and during winter - obviously, maximum efficiency is reached when the sun is shining. Over the course of a year many installations will produce excess for the national grid.

You’re so right: the spin doctors for Labour never stop on here.

I can't decide whether I want the US election over sooner or later. Trump/Vance ticket? No thanks. Biden/Harris... I don't like the look of that either. An upper age limit is needed for the Presidency. I'd suggest 65 should be the oldest eligible age. I want the candidates to have a vision for the future, so young enough to have to live with the world they envision for 20 years, yet be experienced enough to see the pitfalls and problems. IMO, the perfect age to be president is 45-60.

Emmanuelll · 16/07/2024 21:42

Re: solar panels, doesn't it take ages before they've paid for themselves and start saving you money?

Yep, totally agree. I mean my dad is 78 and his cognitive decline is worse than Biden's I'd say. People get older, it's completely natural. But you really can't have Biden introducing Zelenskyy as Putin.

I don’t envy the United States. What a choice. It is no choice at all. How have they got to this terrible point?

Both sides must have better candidates. Is it the last flash of a dominant generation who had their young in the 1960s? It feels like it is the end of a particular era for politics; Biden should not run.

Emmanuelll · 16/07/2024 22:32

IKR? A massive country and they don't have better candidates? I absolutely don't believe it.

@EmmEmmanuelll

The problem with the reelection of Trump is that people seem to forget he is a sociathpath with an axe to grind and people to avenge.

There is also the fact that he has hinted at altering the law, so he stays in power, and his children take over from him.

Do I think he would. Yes! Oh, the people of the U.S. wouldn't allow it. How exactly would they stop it. He doesn't care. We have only to look at 06/01/2020 for that.

As for Biden. I like him. Do I think he should be running again? No! However, he is. Trump and Biden are the same age roughly. Neither of them should be running on age alone.

Trump can't open his mouth without lying. CNN checked him last night. He told 30 lies in his speech.

Biden has scores of advisors and a team behind him. They will do more than we know. I would rather Biden and his back team than Trump in any way, shape, or form.

For those of you who don't know, Biden speech can be problematic and always has been. He was born with a severe stutter that he has worked on all his life.

BTW, if you had seen the clip straight after Joe Biden called Zelenski, Putin, he corrected himself.

Yes, JB has slowed down. He is not as quick as he used to be or as nimble as he used to be. He gets his words muddled, etc.

He also has to have regular physical and cognitive tests. However, I would rather JB of him and Trump.

Trump running mate JD Vance is as bad, if not worse, than Trump.

What happens in the U.S. affects us all. Another 4 years of Trump terrifies me

Have a look for Jesse on YouTube, who has a YouTube called Ring of Fire. He is a solicitor and talks about politics in the U.S, if you want to get the viewpoint out there

Biden doesn’t just get names wrong, though, does he? He loses the purpose of a statement and can’t recover it. He can’t keep a train of thought. He’s seriously, bed-wittingly senile and everyone can see it.

Nobody wants Trump. But in an elective democracy you have to oppose. Biden has failed to oppose. The Dems have failed to oppose.

That’s the trouble in cheerleading for professional, nothing-else, insulated politicians like Biden: they won’t step down, and no one can persuade them to. They want nothing less than the highest office and will hang on to it like Gollum.
