To like Keir Starmer?

Unlike Tony Blair, he comes from a working class background - his siblings would still call themselves working class.

As a very bright lawyer, he could have sought a path which made him rich quickly but instead chose human rights which isn’t an easy route to take and he’s defended ‘the little guy’ against corporations. He’s also anti-death penalty.

Ok, he’s a Sir, and I’ve heard people (perhaps not unreasonably) question why the leader of the Labour Party would have a title like that. But he earned it through work for the criminal justice system.

On the face of it, it seems as though he deserves a chance.

I would much rather have him as PM than a former Bullingdon club member who used to burn money in front of homeless people for the fun of it.

Macron seems to like Starmer

Maybe Starmer's just promised France another £50 million to "help stop the boats".

Emmanuelll · 11/07/2024 10:54

I think people need to exercise caution in their Starmer worship and not think he’s wonderful just because he’s the only recent one to have met the bare minimum.

Even his opponents have said that he's a good person and a very capable one. They were gracious about him winning.

I think the Starmer hero worship on here is a bit weired tbh.
I get posters are pleased Labour won the election but this endless fawning over a
somewhat bland and unremarkable man Is strange.
We don't need to see lots of photos of people meeting Starmer as he is doing what every leader has done and will do.
Everything he does and says is admired as if it's something remarkable.
He's been in the job less than a week, he's achieved nothing so far (clearly you would not expect him too yet) yet posters are gushing about him as if everything is done and all is lovely.
And if I read one more time about grown-up being in charge I will scream.
Disclaimer: I did not vote Tory and I am.not a 'Tory bot'

He's not unremarkable though. His achievements are earned. It used to be that people with high networking and connected parents could get into the best universities without the academic ability that others needed to show. I know this has changed in recent years. But for people my age and older, this was the case.

“You think the VAT issue makes him ruthless? Taxing HRT payers more isn't ruthless.”

@Emmanuelll - yes being a specialist in Human Rights laws and proposing a policy which is in breach of those laws, knowing that full well, does make a person ruthless. And hypocritical.

Comes with the politician territory though.

The Daily Telegraph quotes a right wing economist who says it's "likely" in breach of human rights laws and you go all chinese whispers and misleadingly assert that it is. If it is it will be stopped in court. You can stand down.

BIossomtoes · 11/07/2024 11:48

How anyone can call Starmer unremarkable with a straight face is beyond me. He took a joke of a political party that had its worst election results since the 1930s and transformed it into one that won a landslide in less than five years. He was the most successful DPP the country’s ever had and he glided through a gruelling election campaign without a single misstep. I can only hope he carries on being increasingly unremarkable for the next five years, it’s clearly a winning strategy.

YANBU I really like him and I think he’s going to be good for us he understands the working class a lot better than any of the others and his wife works for the NHS. Neither of them where born with a silver spoon in their mouths and as far as I can tell he’s made no empty promises.

same here. I like Starner more and more in government and the calmness and purposefulness of him and his team. Thank god we as voters might finally start to see that we need grown ups who can handle complexity in charge of running our country. Rather than internally competing, incompetent, self serving, showboating, dangerous sociopaths.Or professional wind up merchants like Farage.

Yeah this. ^ I really like Starmer, and think he is the best person for the job. ! am really looking forward to the next few years with a Labour Government! (And good riddance to the shower-of-shite Tories!)

What a tedious and predictable comment. 🙄

Makes a change from 'are you his mother' I suppose. Wink

Since when has stating facts been defending anyone?

Champagnesocialismo · 11/07/2024 12:04

He’s pretty smart and the Gov are busy setting a narrative about competence. That is coming through well. It’s fair comment actually that’s it’s a low base because the Conservatives have been so insular that they stopped having external candidates who can carry this competence message.

You can see they are clearing the difficult stuff fast. Thames Water into special measure. Prison capacity and policy changed overnight. Get a spending review done, then start the blame on the Conservatives for all their incompetence.

The facts that his finances are a matter of public record - as all public servants’ should be.

ScribblingPixie · 11/07/2024 12:59

I didn't vote Labour but, honestly, if a decently paid professional family man in his 60s wasn't smart enough to climb London's property ladder to the height of a terraced house in a pleasant-enough area I'd definitely not trust him with the country's finances.

Iffx · 11/07/2024 13:20

Starmer is an intelligent and accomplished adult. As I said before, this should be the bare minimum. But has not been in recent years.

Despite him being the best option this time, I do not agree with some of his policies (particularly the potentially illegal private school VAT) and I also think his ideology/principles are so deeply ingrained that they are inflexible.

It was disturbing to hear that he’d let a family member suffer on a waiting list and not get them a private appointment. Having been there with my teen ds with a testicular lump, terrified it’s cancer, hideously embarrassed and on the way to not being able to function mentally over this issue - I got a private scan. I find Starmer’s attitude either very ignorant or ideological to the point where he would allow his teens to suffer for a prolonged period of time even though he had the means to get a scan.

But the thing is, if he had gone private, you'd probably be here saying that he's a hypocrite and doesn't follow through with what he stands for. Sometimes politicians can't win.

Probably because it is staged. 🙄

Araminta1003 · 11/07/2024 14:31

I wouldn’t underestimate the significance of football. If we do end up winning, it is a massive feel good factor for many and helps a new Government’s popularity indirectly. Everyone would remember when Labour got in and we won the football!

I find his attitude untruthful. He will say whatever he thinks people want to hear at the time, as usual.

Either or, isn't it? Either untruthful or questionable priorities. I presume he just gave a duff answer. It'd have been better to have said nobody should have to make that choice.

He clarified it by saying, "He would not jump the waiting lists on normal procedures."

Anyone, even if you had to go into debt, would find the money if it was life and death and treatment wasn't forthcoming locally

Yes. The poster I quoted said it might be questionable priorities. I disagreed and said I thought it was untruthful.
