We did tell them to fuck off. The only way to do it was to rally under one banner. with one goal: defeat the far right. We French have always voted tactilely; this is not new.
RN is a fascist party; Jean Marie Le Pen was a torturer, during the Algerian War of Independence. My late father ( a conscript in the same war) hated him with a vengeance because he knew him for who he was. A vile human being.

You don't need to convince me that the RN are horrendous.

Genevieva · 07/07/2024 21:51

Maybe you haven’t looked past the headlines. Mélenchon makes Le Pen look like a moderate. He is a far left extremist. He supported Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014 and he has been a vocal supporter of leaving NATO. He has communist ideas about the redistribution of private savings and the taxation of home ownership.

Nazis started as socialists and if you care to read some history books

the irony of someone regurgitating this old trope and then pompously advising others to read some history books. Good Lord.

No the Nazis were not socialists, despite the party name, just as North Korea isn't a democracy despite the country's official name being the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

Hope this helps.

You judge the standards of 1933 Hitler as a benchmark for far right n 2024??

https://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/italy-giorgia-meloni-brothers-of-italy-youth-fascist-salutes-video-rcna160108

?? I am not sure you read my post. I said there was no comparison between today's "far" right Meloni and Le Pen and Hitler/Nazis
There is no comparison, so no benchmarking! And I didn't refer to 1933 either.
What point were you trying to make?

Where are you seeing hard left?

It's how some of our media reporting has framed it. Although I see from other answers only some of the coalition is hard left, others are more moderate. I suppose it will boil down to who ends up with the most control. Seems too early to tell at the moment.

dizzydizzydizzy · 07/07/2024 21:57

Phew! Brilliant news!

@rumnraisins@rumnraisins@ElizaMulvil why have you reported that post!

Really, terrible immigration problem due to our geography? Don't think so. France is diverse due to its past as a coloniser.
According to Wikipedia, 10% of French residents are foreign born, compared with 14% of British residents being foreign born....
40% of French foreign born live around Paris, and Paris doesn't tend to vote National Front.

TwigletsAndRadishes · 07/07/2024 22:00

The dog's dinner they've been left with is not going to be any better though, trust me. This hastily thrown together left wing alliance has Jean Luc Melanchon leading it and he's a Marxist who will bring the French economy to its knees. The financial markets are going to plummet, The euro is going to fall, investors are going to pull out of France. The rest of Macron's presidency is going to be spent doing battle in every direction and getting nowhere on anything. There is going to be a huge amount of social and political instability that could potentially bring France to the brink of a civil war.

Plus JLM is very EU sceptic, so I don't think any metropolitan elite, pro-EU centrist types should be sleeping too soundly tonight. If you are breathing a sigh of relief thinking that France has been pulled from the clutches of a monster, then you should know that all that's happened is that it's fallen into the clutches of a different monster. Don't be congratulating anyone just yet. It's an epic mess.

They were national socialists and there is an element of that in some of their domestic policies but other aspects of their domestic policies and their foreign policies were inhumane and heinous, is the point, I think. @rumnraisins I think your bits of info are random and out of context, there may be snippets of truth but they aren't relevant to the bigger picture, in my opinion.

This is an immense relief for foreigners in France, whose lives here would have been made difficult or impossible by the discriminatory laws that the RN would have passed. At least tonight's result buys us two more years.

Cherrysoup · 07/07/2024 22:03

RaspberryIce · 07/07/2024 19:43

I think even the far right in France don't want to leave the EU. So they've learned from us that it was idiotic to hold that referendum and bumble out of the single market.

Actually, le Pen thinks France should leave Europe (and NATO) She’s all about France for the ‘real’ French and self rule without interference from Europe. Trouble is, despite her glamorisation of the party, new name, fresh faced Bardella, denying her father’s ‘there was no Holocaust’ rhetoric, she is fundamentally determined to have ‘zero immigration’.

Given the horrific events since 2016 (just thinking of the ones that probably stick most in people’s memories), it’s understandable that her share of the vote was high, but history repeated itself today with the 2nd round again bringing out the liberals. She’ll be running for president in 2027, tho.

Fawful · 07/07/2024 22:03

@OvaHere, the PM will not be from the hard left, that is clear from listening to French sources

Hedgeoffressian · 07/07/2024 22:05

How is anti-immigration far-right? I see nothing wrong with wanting control of the borders and not allowing a country to be flooded with people from all over the world. I think there is a far-left uprising and this is evidence of it.

"I've reported this post"

Did you report it for the line about the parasitic capitalist class? I found that really unacceptable to read. I hope the OP was trying to say that was the Nazi's view but it came across as if it were the OP's view/known fact. OP needs to be much more careful with their use of language, I can't imagine being Jewish and reading that post..

I suspect the maneuvering and the standing down of so many candidates is going to leave the right-wing voters feeling very frustrated and fuel their discontent. This wasn't some glorious victory and there will be more trouble ahead.

Totally agree.

@Cherrysoup what horrific events since 2016?

Wishfulthinking1977 · 07/07/2024 22:10

I personally wouldn't be celebrating at the moment! If you look across the globe what you consider 'far right' is gaining momentum. Most countries seem to have been pretty much centralist for a while. Fwiw I know people that are far right and far left and none of the parties in any country really align with their views. If what you consider a far left party ( as some do consider labour in this country) don't address the many issues within their own country then the side may switch. In 5 years time ( if things don't improve) people may feel a switch to another end is needed? As in they will vote to the other end of the considered spectrum. The labelling on both sides is a dangerous assumption and may end up reversing on itself. Just my opinion obviously!

@Cherrysoup what horrific events since 2016?
