I think you need to meet people outside your bubble. My parents are racist but i would never hate them. I have been subject to alot of racism growing up. The world is not black and white and any kind of idealist, morally superior mentality is dangerous. That's how the Nazis started.

But if someone votes for a party who advocate for hatred and intolerance, it's a bit rich of them to throw that back at those who call them on their shit.

Okki · 07/07/2024 20:17

Well it's all a bit shit for France really. 3 years of nothing to come. A parliament made up of far right and left with a centrist (almost) President. No one is going to agree on anything.

rumnraisins · 07/07/2024 20:15

Two cheeks of the same arse if you ask me.

But I’m biased: some of my family were sentenced to die in Auschwitz and some were tortured to death in communist prisons not long after the WW2 ended.

@rumnraisins has just put it so much better than me 👏👏👏

This - they haven’t told anyone to ‘fuck off’, to get this result a lot of candidates had to tactically withdraw. Ignore Le Pen’s popularity at your own peril, it’s how we ended up with Brexit (not Le Pen but smearing people with concerns as racist and trying to ignore the whole sorry mess)

LOL. Yes, Brexit is definitely the fault of the people who voted AGAINST it. Not the fault of the tories for holding the referendum and the Brexiteers who lied about it and those who believed them and voted accordingly. Nice try!

Quelle surprise 😲 Allons Citoyens! 🇫🇷

CreateUserNames · 07/07/2024 20:18

The left needs to recognise the danger of this all and stop pressing hard on people.

ClawedUkelele · 07/07/2024 20:18

DeerOhDear · 07/07/2024 20:12

I can't understand why anyone would be happy that the hard left is potentially in power.
Surely everyone is now aware there isn't much in the hard left and hard right.

Horse shoe theory is dubious at best.

Viviennemary · 07/07/2024 20:18

Why should the Uk be bothered about what happens in France. They are nothing to do with us.

Oh give over, I hate this reframing the far right as "they were really left wing because the party was called the national socialist party" they literally put communists and socialists in death camps.

"First they came for the Communists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Communist
Then they came for the Socialists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Socialist
Then they came for the trade unionists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a trade unionist
Then they came for the Jews
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Jew
Then they came for me
And there was no one left
To speak out for me"

@Sakura7 I know what you mean. It's great news. I'm overjoyed with the Labour landslide but it's tempered with the news that ghastly Farage made some progress. One just wishes the far right would fuck off altogether in a puff of sulphurous smoke. Probably won't happen though.

I find the far left ‘ghastly’ too, and one just hopes they don’t take over the Labour Party…..

Horse shoe theory is dubious at best.

Only if you mean that overall the commies have killed a lot more people than the ‘far right’.

Fupalover · 07/07/2024 20:21

2 sides of the same coin I agree. Look at Mussolini.

I'm delighted but complacency would be foolish. It took a lot of candidates falling on their own swords to make this happen. Unless parties sort out immigration they are only kicking the can down the road.

Hopefully the UK and France can work together on the boats issue. A solution that is more humane and less costly than flights to Rwanda.

rumnraisins · 07/07/2024 20:21

More than I mean it's a theory that has extremely little academic support.

rumnraisins · 07/07/2024 20:21

75 million dead from the far right starting world war 2 is a pretty hefty number in any language.

This is fabulous news. Off to read

rainymcrainrain · 07/07/2024 19:48

Amazing how people who think they are progressive and tolerant are just as hateful and intolerant as the people they hate

Well, I think it was a good thing for France and the world that DeGaulle and others were NOT tolerant of the fascists and their collaborators.

Not all political views are equal. (And indeed, DeGaulle's, like Churchill's, would not have been mine in many respects. No matter. The difference between the far right and everyone else overrides most other political differences.)

Let's hope that the decent people of France and elsewhere in Europe can stop resurgent fascism, long before it reaches the point that it did in the 30s and 40s.

Vive la France!

RhetoricalRectangle · 07/07/2024 20:25

Nothing really to celebrate! The French now have a hung parliament with a big right wing presence. Another thing is I doubt Macron or any of the centre left will listen to the french people.

I have a few friends that live in France and they tell me noone trusts politicians at all regardless of what party they represent.

Anonym00se · 07/07/2024 20:26

@rumnraisins The Nazis didn’t start a socialists, they started as the German Workers Party, then added the ‘socialist’ part to try and get more support. Then they sent the socialists and communists to the camps. There was bugger all left about the Nazis, they were far right.

It’s also worth mentioning that both Marx’s grandfathers were rabbis, and the Nazis burned his books because he was of Jewish descent.

biscuitandcake · 07/07/2024 20:27

I also dislike this moral superiority over other people’s countries and feeling entitled to a say in their democratic processes. Why aren’t you starting threads about the South African election? Is it just Western countries capable of bad electoral decisions in your eyes or are non-Western countries held to the same scrutiny?

Its because they are our neighbours. They have a history that is the same as ours but different. And a political/legal situation that is completely different but sort of the same. I am sure people in Zimbabwe etc are discussing South Africa without feeling guilty. Its not like anyone is suggesting we invade France to impose our will.

They are! They’re 20 miles away from us - and not only are they our closest trading partner but their government and ours work closely on migration issues (among many other things), so they’re pretty important to us.

LordPercyPercy · 07/07/2024 20:28

Read up on Mélenchon. He's pro-Putin. Horseshoe theory actually is a thing in this case.

Have you been paying attention for the last five years? Starmer has well and truly seen off that threat.
