What a brave lady.

Whilst I am not an ardent Labour supporter, I completely support you and how you have stood up to the bullying, racism, violence and hatred sent your way.

Sad that your family could not be there to see your victory but under the circumstances you made the right choice.

That this country is allowing this type of intimidation and behaviour - we should be ashamed of ourselves.

No. For me it's because she is a rampant TRA.

…and this if the problem with Single Issue Politics. One mob baying over Gaza, another over Gender.. when we all know life (particularly as a politician) isn’t as simple as that. You are there to represent a mixed community

TriesNotToBeCynical · 05/07/2024 16:18

Being half Indian would make you not Islamophobic how??

So objecting to the heckling and abuse and threats of violence that JP has received is Islamophobia now? Ok then. 🙄

Misinformation?

The story is always more nuanced than the tik tok style information being passed around

Christ it's exhausting. Pps just deliberately missing the point

Hummingbird75 · 05/07/2024 17:12

I am so sorry you are in fact being subjected to terrible racism yourself. Have you considered reporting these crimes to the police? Spitting is assault.

I haven’t lived in her constituency but know central Birmingham well and can concur with this and previous posts of the reality and failure of Birmingham as a multicultural city.

It would be a waste of time reporting the assault to the police. They haven’t got time, are misogynistic anyway, and will avoid challenge, especially when 10 witnesses will appear to say the accuser is lying.

What has happened to Jess Phillips is frightening. She has been intimidated by TRAs and their allies to silence what she knows to be true, and is at risk of losing her seat due to the religious tribalism of a voting sector.

Indeed.

As a female who grew up in this area also and was spat on and verbally abused regularly just because of my white skin, I wholeheartedly agree with your entire post.

But then again both myself and others in my position have never been allowed to talk about or complain as I will be labeled a racist or right-wing. 😡

Yep and this thread is proof of how you wouldn't be listened to. Tribalism and binary approach must end

That discounting People and justifying criminal acts against them based on single issue politics is continually divisive

All of those reasons are precisely why I like her.

I first discovered Jess P when she read the name of every woman that had been killed by (I think) their partner in the house of commons over the past year- She went over time and was (from memory) reminded at the end by the speaker that there is a time limit.

Harrowing to listen to.

Didn't know much else but shall drop a follow on the socials and looking forward to learning more about her and her leadership.

I don't think wider global issues should be allowed to infiltrate our politics here. It will be never ending hot bed that is impossible for any MP to manage, IF this is allowed to continue.

MPs should be standing solely on local issues. They can not and should not be getting involved in politics all over the world, that has NOTHING at all to do with the area they work in. It should be a zero tolerance policy that MPs represent local issues only surrounding their area and nothing else.

The minute we start to deviate into global politics then this will happen constantly and takes away all of the time, oxygen and energy from the very local issues they were being appointed for, because everyone has a different view on everything worldwide.

We allow PEACEFUL protest in this country, but this is at risk if it becomes uncontrolled mobs and thugs abusing our MPs and others, and not the peaceful protest at all.

Edited

I understood it in 2005 election over Iraq because of our direct involvement and Blair's role specifically at the front and centre of an illegal war.

To the average UK voter Israel-Palestine isn't really a factor for voting intentions and there's nothing we can realistically do anyway beyond calling for a ceasefire (which Jess has). Domestic policies are what people are bothered about in our own elections. But there's large sections of communities in some constituencies who are pathological about it as the be all and end all.

Sorry if this has already been posted, but it gives a good indication of what Jess Phillips had to put up with last night. I find the men filming her very sinister, and I think at the end one yells out “baby killer”. (You may have to get through an ad for Corrie first!). I’d really like to know why they weren’t immediately thrown out.

Hummingbird75 · 05/07/2024 17:31

Kolbie · 05/07/2024 16:55

Sorry but don't use 'we' as there is nothing civilised in backing the terrorist genocidal state of Israel and Israel has been actively terrorising since 1948. Israel is an occupying force.
Civilised people call for a ceasefire. Now. Genocide supporters are not civilised.
'We' as a nation call for a ceasefire as 'we' are civilised. The stats back this.
Don't discuss the killing of over 50,000 people by Israel, 70% of whom are children and women in trivial terms either. We all know this is a genocide. We all know the Israeli army are terrorists. The elephant in the room can no longer be ignored.
Disgusting.
Listen to the testimonials of Israeli army soldiers who have defected, a movement known as 'breaking the silence' to fully understand the terrorism purpotrated by the Israeli army in Gaza and the West Bank for decades.

Israel is not an 'occupying' force, if you look at the history - Palestine at the time was not a state at all, it was loosely run by various different nations including the UK at the time. It was a mistake, I think most people can accept, in hindsight it was a mistake to place so many traumatised people in that particular place, but they have been there now for 80 years and some working solution will need to be found so that both states can live peacefully side by side.

This is the only thing that can work.

Hamas killing babies, murdering and raping Israeli people will not work
Israeli people retaliating with similar brute force will not work either.

I would avoid making up numbers of dead on either side, it is impossible to verify.

But this has nothing to do with Birmingham. Or anywhere else.
This has nothing to do with Jess Philips.

We can not be drawn into politics all over the world, at every election just because YOU think we should be.

We will remain a tolerant and calm nation, listening and respecting all sides and showing some understanding that there are no winners here. It is lose lose for both sides.

If you wish to remain living in a peaceful, democratic and safe country you need to stop this behaviour immediately. It will not be tolerated, and it is breaking the law.

You are entitled to your view, I am entitled to mine and they are equal.
You are not entitled to spit, intimidate, scream and threaten ANYONE in this country over ANY issue. Do you understand?

We will not accept this, and more draconian laws will be needed to deal with this otherwise.

I’m sorry but this is not the vicitmhood olympics.

She and her team have been abused and intimidated. At a meeting held by Shabana Mahmood (Labour MP in neighbouring constituency), the meeting was interrupted by masked men. People’s tired have been slashed. They are filmed and followed.

She has stood there on TV, in front of a crowd, while these men continue to heckle and abuse her.

And she didn’t cower. She said exactly what she thought.

Yea she’s very bloody brave!

This is the UK general election, not a bloody referendum on the beliefs of the residents of Birmingham on the Palestinian-Israeli situation.

Edited

This.

Absolutely shocking how many apologists are on here.
I was going to mention Shabana Mahmood too.
Having a gang of masked men enter your meeting is terrible.
I don't understand why there hasn't been more reporting about this.

I don't care whether you agree with someone's politics or not, intimidation should not be a part of political campaigns.
Disappointing that security didn't remove the perpetrators sooner, but, OTOH, possibly not, as a few more people might have been made aware of what Jess Phillips and others have to put up with regularly.

I go to Birmingham a few times a month and have a good friend who lives there. Ladywood is truly awful and Sparkhill worse. It’s been completely taken over with men hanging around the streets and god knows what going on behind closed doors.

I've said this on other threads but I think the effect of Reform and the Gaza 'Independents' on the results is incredibly worrying for the direction of UK politics. I also think the media should have given equal focus to the comments and behaviour of the Gaza lobby as they did to bigoted Reform candidates and workers.

About twenty years ago I worked in Birmingham and there were Muslim preachers who would harass women on the streets, with particular ire directed at women whom they suspected to be Muslims wearing 'western' dress. One of my colleagues, a Kenyan Muslim, used to get shouted at every day for not covering her hair. Another colleague, a Pakistani woman who had also lived in Abu Dhabi, said she had never felt pressure to cover her face and hair until she moved to Birmingham.

It's just very concerning that religious extremism and sympathy for totalitarian regimes has found an 'in' into mainland UK politics, especially at the same time as Farage and other Putin sympathisers are on the rise in Europe. Mainstream politicians need to stop claiming that there is nothing to see here.

User135644 · 05/07/2024 17:33

Labour and the other main parties need to be clear after this episode that these global conflicts have no place in local politics.

But then that might mean backing away from Labour Friends of Israel.

Imustgoforarun · 05/07/2024 17:35

Blimey that acceptance speech has opened my eyes. I didn’t appreciate what was going on re single non local issue independent. That is really frightening. Chances are they will get voted in next GE. If there is anything to make me vote reform that does. I won’t of course but many will and have done clearly. Labour, and all those in power, need to stop this immediately before it spreads to other cities. This is threatening democracy.

radiatorbed · 05/07/2024 17:35

Humtum · 05/07/2024 17:22

gaslighting... 😂

I didn't say that at all. I actually agree with her. But being half Indian probably makes you more likely to be Islamophobic, not less. Hindu Indian anyway. If she hadn't mentioned it I wouldn't have commented. As I say, I actually agree with what she said. Supporting genocide in Gaza is despicable, but we have no right to harass and threaten even despicable people.

radiatorbed · 05/07/2024 17:37

crochetmonkey74 · 05/07/2024 17:22

Nope she can hold contrary ideas to you and still have a good idea.
We HAVE to stop discounting people on one thing

She was also associated with PIE. Or do you forgive her that also?

Misogyny and PIE - not something I am ready to discount, sorry.

TriesNotToBeCynical · 05/07/2024 17:37

mrshoho · 05/07/2024 16:29

You sound like you agree with the bullying men that were abusive to her? Intimating she deserved the threats and abuse. Well this is the UK where we respect the democratic vote. If we don't agree we have the right to peaceful protest that does not include abuse and threats.

I sound like I agree with their politics. I absolutely don't agree with them threatening and abusing people.

CaravaggiosCat · 05/07/2024 17:40

Boomer55 · 05/07/2024 16:52

This isn’t a man vs women thing - this was about Gaza. I don’t know why anyone thought we needed it in a British GE, but there you go. 🙄

This..its fucking ridiculous.
