Voting labour for the first time. Anyone else?

Labour are far from perfect, but I like Keir Starmer and I think they are the best party to turn things around from the awful mess the incumbents have got us into.

He’s not glossy or witty or funny, but he seems decent - (he clearly has a wonderful wife and that only reflects well on him!)

Anyway, just curious - anyone else voting Labour for the first time? I’m 40 by the way and in the south east.

Realigning with the EU will be an interesting prospect when so many of its members are swinging to the hard right.

That old chestnut when you have no arguement! I have been here for 15 years pal, I am in no way a 'bot' thanks!

You won't engage, because every single thing I have said is the truth, and the one thing Labour voters don't seem to like is the truth.

Starmer has confirmed everything I have said, in their own manifesto and Starmer has covered this multiple times in the debates.

All your claims are stated in the Labour manifesto, are they?

I’ve read it, but didn’t spot them. Perhaps you can help - I’m sure you can point to the parts of the Labour manifesto which, for example, say that Labour is going to raise all taxes in every way possible?
I’m sure you can identify the paragraph where it says that thousands of private school pupils will be flooding the state system?

I can only assume that you have wealth on a par with Michelle Mone (maybe you are her..?) and are terrified that Labour might actually make you pay a fair proportion of taxes. No middle earner has a chance under the Tories. As shown by the last 14 years.

Neighbours87 · 04/07/2024 08:15

i actually like that Keir is boring and lacking charisma. We’ve had the strong characters and look at the state they got us into. We need someone who can quietly get on with the job

I suspect the people voting leave would be even higher now. After all they had a campaign of terror to try and keep us in, the country apparently would fall apart and we would all be eating gruel. It just didn't happen did it.

Everywhere in Europe is changing. People do not want to be governed by a bunch of corrupt, faceless gangsters in Brussels. Starmer is so behind the times already.

You say ‘people’ I don’t know anybody that thinks leaving the Eu was a good idea and the people I know, DH and I are all in positions the generate wealth for lots of people - so when you talk of ‘people’ you are not speaking for anyone in the population that is a majority so just quit it!

Do you pay any tax?? I guess for you it is a non issue, but for the rest of us working hard. Hiking up the taxes even more is going to be a real issue, yes.

I am not sure why you are struggling so much to understand what Starmer is saying, but he has been crystal clear.

But they were the majority! Isn't that the point.

Starmer is going to reopen the brexit wars, I suspect as a cover for what he hasn't been able to change and improve - and there will be ten more years of fighting. I am not keen on that myelf, no, i would rather spend a decade investing in the country, improving people's quality of life - increasing people's life chances. Not just union fights, brexit wars, tax hikes and Angela Rayner embarrassing us on the world stage.

I’m voting Tory 🤮 to protect my daughters from the sc*mbags who want them pregnant, barefoot and tied to the kitchen sink and to protect everyone else from a party that has proven time and time again (historically) that it cannot be trusted with pocket money let alone a country’s economy.

My daughter managed to get excellent GCSE and A level results from a bog standard comprehensive during the last Labour government.

Ahhh, so you think all of us voting Labour don’t pay tax? You implied on another thread that we probably claim benefits.

You also said we were “lucky” to have food banks and that “even people who don’t work for a living” are able to have a good quality of life under the Tories.

You are deluded, and not worth engaging with.

And? She somehow stood out for that because no one else did?

Goldenbear · 04/07/2024 08:21

No thanks to more and isolationism, no thanks to make our world smaller and smaller, who we can talk to, what group we are aligned with - it is so suffocating and hateful! What’s next let’s build a big fucking wall in the see around the British isles!

No. I usually vote Labour/lib Dem but am voting for party of women to register my discontent with all of the parties in protecting women's rights. If that wasn't sn option I'd spoil my ballot. I can't understand a single woman voting for labour.

Because women are many things and not just women. You can’t vote on a single issue

I do pay tax. I’m a higher rate payer so I pay a lot of tax. And most of my taxes have lined the pockets of Tory donors for the last 14 years. Billions going on track and trace, billions going on defective PPE equipment, billions going to the likes of Rees-Mogg who bet against the pound and made a fortune from brexit (whilst confining the country to generations of hardship as a result).

Starmer has repeatedly said he is not raising income tax or NI. If he goes after the super-rich with inheritance tax and CGT, good on him. If he taxes the super-rich pensions, crack on. I have no assets and no pension thanks to living through austerity with the Tories.

I’ m still waiting for you to pop down the relevant paragraphs in the Labour manifesto that you say backs up your argument about their policies, because pretty much everything you’ve said is contradicted by that manifesto,

There are net contributors in society
There are net recipients in society

There is a world of difference between the two in society in terms of contribution, and that is why we see some people championing high taxes on here to the hilt, because it benefits them (they hope)
Not breaking news is it.

Genuinely mind boggled over the people claiming that women’s rights is a their single issue vote and then voting Tory

I assume they're established Tory voters who are looking for an excuse to still be voting for them.

Tactical Labour vote for me. #SNPout

GruntledGoblin · 04/07/2024 08:25

Absolutely not. If he'll lie about people being able to change sex then how the hell can we trust him. Lifelong Labour voter, but I'm spoiling my ballot.

JFDIYOLO · 04/07/2024 08:26

I'm politically homeless and still wavering, but I think it will have to be Green despite our own MP pityingly telling me 'but they're not male people' when I asked what their policy was re male sex offenders in women's prisons. Climate change is one of my top concerns.

The last quarterly figures show the UK growth highest among the G7 nations, no?

Brexit has decimated the economy by 2-3% compared to if we’d remained in the EU (which is a conservative estimate, some put it at as high as 5%). The number of high profile Tories who backed Brexit in itself is ample evidence of their economic idiocy and should keep them out of power for a generation.

I’ll spell it out for you - a lot of people don’t just vote in their own best interest. Some people vote for the most vulnerable in society, and even though they may not be mega rich, they don’t mind paying extra tax in order to benefit society as a whole.
