Voting labour for the first time. Anyone else?

Labour are far from perfect, but I like Keir Starmer and I think they are the best party to turn things around from the awful mess the incumbents have got us into.

He’s not glossy or witty or funny, but he seems decent - (he clearly has a wonderful wife and that only reflects well on him!)

Anyway, just curious - anyone else voting Labour for the first time? I’m 40 by the way and in the south east.

You are quoting Wikipedia? Seriously? You know anyone can edit it?! He probably wrote that himself..even 'Boris Bikes' wasn't his idea, he just took credit for his predecessor who did the hard work.

And the London Olympics.

I am a socialist who has never voted Labour because I live in a Tory stronghold.
Even with tactical voting, I have never had an MP I voted for. Not once in 50 years.
Our current system is a nonsense and I would love to vote Labour for the first time.

The Lib Dems and Greens have more left wing manifestos than Labour at the moment. Currently Labour is centralist as the Tories have gone to the right into Reform territory.

It is shame you have no idea how much worse things will be.

Wait wait, hummingbirds got a crystal ball of the future..! I hope you predicted just how bad things would get under the Tories with it during the last election. The thing is, maybe you were ok under the Tories, but many weren't. Those people don't want any more of that. So that means something needs to change. The Tory party are not changing realistically it will just be more of the same shite. So the best defence they have is ohhh it will be even worse under labour. What kind of defence is that?! One from a party who hasn't got anything else to offer and knows it.

And the London Olympics.

Yes he tried to claim he delivered the Olympics too I forgot that! But actually the bid for London 2012 was put in under labour who persuaded the olympic committee led by Seb coe. The olympic delivery team run by Sir John Armitt were responsible for the stadiums, transport infrastructure upgrades, all delivered on time and to a sensible budget. Then

You know you can look at the bottom of the page for the reference;

YouGov
In hindsight, the majority of Londoners (52%) say [Johnson] has done a good job, while 29% say he hasn't performed well.

It takes 3 to 4 years … my husband was a governor at his old primary school a few years ago and also safe guarding checks police checks and not only that not everyone’s cut out for teaching … quality not quantity.

A PGCE can be be completed in one year. Safeguarding checks take weeks to come back. But you are correct that not everyone is cut out for teaching and the new government will have to do a lot to attract and retain quality candidates considering the dire state it's currently in.

Mountainhowl · 04/07/2024 20:41

I voted LD, it would have been Labour (always have in the past) but we have a LD mp currently who is decent and seems to be doing a good job, and she seems to want it unlike Labour, we've had absolutely no info through the door from Labour but plenty from the LD candidate, as well as a knock on the door asking for our vote so as a tactical vote I've gone with them

I'm GC but there are far bigger issues, and it's not like the cons have put their foot down against men in women's spaces. If gender stuff does get worse under Labour we can always march and make our feelings known later down the line, but right now it's about survival and having access to basic stuff like health care and half decent schooling

MadameMassiveSalad · 04/07/2024 20:47

Please just vote the tories out 🙏

Guess you live abroad if you think you will be unaffected.

MineIsALemonFanta · 04/07/2024 21:12

I couldn’t vote for them because they don’t want to protect women-only spaces and they bullied Rosie Duffield when she pointed out that you’re not a women if you have a penis.

I am a teacher, who did a PGCE in one year. You can fast track a DBS check and get it there in days.

All of this information is available online though I'm getting the impression you're not the kind of person that gets their information from reliable sources.

You are so privileged if that's the only issue you are concerned with particularly as the Tories only became interested in this after austerity.

Austerity that screwed up child services, youth services, state school education, public health, NHS, the courts, the criminal justice system...

Please don't be disingenuous.

I didn't say teacher training. I said a PGCE which is what Matronic said.

It's there in black and white for all to see. Its your own fault you misread/misunderstood.

Doubling down is very foolish when it's there in black and white for all to see.

Myself and other posters said a PGCE takes a year.

You wrongly said it didn't and then tried to deflect the argument. Dress it up however you want but you were wrong.

A PGCE does indeed take a year. The mature thing to do would be to admit you were wrong. I'll wait lol.
