Voting labour for the first time. Anyone else?

Labour are far from perfect, but I like Keir Starmer and I think they are the best party to turn things around from the awful mess the incumbents have got us into.

He’s not glossy or witty or funny, but he seems decent - (he clearly has a wonderful wife and that only reflects well on him!)

Anyway, just curious - anyone else voting Labour for the first time? I’m 40 by the way and in the south east.

You’re being ridiculous.
I assume you’re a Tory bot so I’m not going to engage beyond this.

I wish he would look to rejoin Europe (although he’s been crystal clear he won’t). The vast majority of people regret brexit and want to rejoin, so it would be a popular policy decision.

Let’s not forget that brexit is costing this country billions every year.

That old chestnut when you have no arguement! I have been here for 15 years pal, I am in no way a 'bot' thanks!

You won't engage, because every single thing I have said is the truth, and the one thing Labour voters don't seem to like is the truth.

Starmer has confirmed everything I have said, in their own manifesto and Starmer has covered this multiple times in the debates.

I’m middle England. Under Tories my mortgage has gone up, my energy bills have gone up, my food bills have gone up, the beaches I used to go are no longer safe to swim in because they’re full of shit. I can’t get a GP appointment, I dread any time my kids might need to go to A&E. I had to move my daughter from state to private school because her state school was completely unable to manage disruptive behaviour - too few teachers/teaching assistants for the class sizes and no funding for PRUs or SEND provisions.

Oh, and my taxes have gone up to the highest level they’ve ever been.

The Tories have allowed the top 1% to get richer and richer. The number of billionaires in this country under this government fas risen exponentially. Their policies have always benefitted the super-rich and to hell with the rest of us.

I’ll take my chances with Labour.

Yes, we are the same, we are on a good combined salary but it doesn’t feel like it under the Tories! However, it isn’t about personal interest for me it is about my Children’s future and the huge inequality in wealth statistically akin to Victorian times!

If you think the conservatives have been doing a good job of running the NHS then there really is no hope for you

The NHS has more than enough money, they just can't handle the finances, employ people they don't need and refuse to sack a single manager. It is a very poorly run organisation.

Hothotdamage · 04/07/2024 08:05

Pensioners already pay taxes , hardly a gotcha.

wippandzipp · 04/07/2024 08:06

We need economic growth, under the Tories, that has stagnated, we are so behind. The worst economic growth for nearly 100 years. They've had their chance. I am voting Labour. I don't agree on all policies but more than others.

Hummingbird75 · 04/07/2024 08:06

And 17.4 million people do NOT regret voting leave. It would lead the war to a civil war in this country if Starmer dares to take us back into the EU.

Please open your eyes, and see what people are voting for in Europe now! Please expand your world vision beyond your own echo chamber and see what is happening in Italy, Sweden, France, the Netherlands. The people in Europe have had enough! We are going to be the outlier, not the other way around.

Barms155 · 04/07/2024 08:07

All this stuff about women's rights. In the year to December 2021, there were 67,125 rape offences recorded – an all-time high. Yet the number of completed rape prosecutions plummeted from 5,190 in 2016-17 to just 2,409.
If I had daughters I couldn't in good consciousness vote for a party that allowed this to happen.

Hothotdamage · 04/07/2024 08:07

Have you asked all 17.4 million ?

amymel2016 · 04/07/2024 08:08

Missgucci · 04/07/2024 06:58

There's a big headline today about labour. If they win, dont own a home , car , pension or try to save. And don't even think of trying to leave your kids anything (of older kids don't expect any inheritance) because labour will see to it that they bleed you dry.

Yeah, in the Daily Mail 😂

FriedGold · 04/07/2024 07:43

Don’t used a biased source to prove your argument. I’m not disagreeing with you, but the Guardian is centre left and will never come out with “facts” which are positive about the Tories. Just saying

Here's another for you @FriedGold.

What source would you like me to use? I'd search for the Daily Fail but I've blocked the site.

To be fair I'll give you that The Guardian is centre left, but most sources are biased. I'd suggest the Guardian is less biased than some (but then I would say that, wouldn't I 🤷‍♀️)

"The verdict
It’s true that Conservative governments have presided over the NHS for the majority of its life.

But for most of the years since the NHS was founded, it’s clear that Labour have out-spent the Conservatives."

I suspect the people voting leave would be even higher now. After all they had a campaign of terror to try and keep us in, the country apparently would fall apart and we would all be eating gruel. It just didn't happen did it.

Everywhere in Europe is changing. People do not want to be governed by a bunch of corrupt, faceless gangsters in Brussels. Starmer is so behind the times already.

Jifmicroliquid · 04/07/2024 08:10

Not a chance. I genuinely believe Starmer in power would be a disaster.

anotherside · 04/07/2024 08:10

If Farage wasn’t splitting the right wing vote, Starmer would probably only be on course to a minority government/leading a coalition at best. Finally - Nigel Farage does something useful for the country!

equisetum · 04/07/2024 08:10

Not a chance.
A man who believes a woman can have a penis spells absolute disaster for our country. What fucking planet is he on. Does his wife have a penis?

amymel2016 · 04/07/2024 08:10

LibDem here, we’re in a Tory stronghold so very unlikely they’ll be gone but tactical voting is the only option. In another constituency it would be Labour, first time not voting Tory (I used to be a fully paid up member of the party 😬)

As at May 2024, 55% of people consider brexit was a bad idea, compared to just 31% who still support it.

‘Civil war’?! Talk about hyperbole, British people having the impetus to engage in a civil war and the money, how would those who want civil war pay for their weapons. The places that voted heavily to leave are statistically the poorest places in the country, that ironically received big EU subsidies so how the hell would this ridiculous notion be pulled off! When was the last time we saw civil war? Completely ridiculous! We aren’t the French or even the Americans!

Not would be - will be. Labour is on course for the greatest, most emphatic victory of a British Political Party in 200 years! Hopefully the Tories will be out of power for a couple of decades at the very least.

I imagine they know you are a human though and require housing, food, healthcare, education etc. Which would go a fair way towards an improved quality of life whoever you are.
When a country is deteriorating there is always a focus for the "problem" so you can be more angry at that group than at the people in power who are causing the problem. In the past they have had women, Jews, Muslims. Now its transwomen. They aren't the problem. The country being ground into the dirt is the problem.

Oh they know you're human-they just think you're a second class one.

The study was sponsored by Europe no doubt. Look around you - you can you see what is happening in Europe right now? Or do you have your eyes covered and your fingers in your ears?

We need to get back to democracy, accountability on a much smaller scale, we need to deliver for real people in Europe. The elite are running amok and quite frankly we should be glad we had the foresight to get out as quickly as we did when you see what is coming down the track.

Starmer seems stuck in 1970s politics. It is deeply frightening when we consider Russia seem to be genuinely delighted at the prospect of having a very weak Labour government. What does that tell you?

Hothotdamage · 04/07/2024 08:14

Then you suspect wrong. 31% of people in the UK think Brexit was the right decision. 55% think it was the wrong decision.
