Voting labour for the first time. Anyone else?

Labour are far from perfect, but I like Keir Starmer and I think they are the best party to turn things around from the awful mess the incumbents have got us into.

He’s not glossy or witty or funny, but he seems decent - (he clearly has a wonderful wife and that only reflects well on him!)

Anyway, just curious - anyone else voting Labour for the first time? I’m 40 by the way and in the south east.

No promised myself I’d never vote Labour again after Tony Blair, Iraq war. Dreadful time!

Defining moment in the breakdown of society for me. Every issue we have today leads back to this point.

I won’t vote Labour. They don’t represent middle England, of which I’m one. Historically they go for the rich and tax them to the hilt. But there’s only so many times they can go to well on that one, then they will come after the middle earners. Also I don’t think the majority of the party think Starmer is enough to the left, and I have a feeling they might be using him to get into power, before easing him out for a more left leaning leader. They are obviously going to get in - let them have their four years and see what they do, then we can always get them out the next time if they don’t deliver, or start to deliver.

I’m middle England. Under Tories my mortgage has gone up, my energy bills have gone up, my food bills have gone up, the beaches I used to go are no longer safe to swim in because they’re full of shit. I can’t get a GP appointment, I dread any time my kids might need to go to A&E. I had to move my daughter from state to private school because her state school was completely unable to manage disruptive behaviour - too few teachers/teaching assistants for the class sizes and no funding for PRUs or SEND provisions.

Oh, and my taxes have gone up to the highest level they’ve ever been.

The Tories have allowed the top 1% to get richer and richer. The number of billionaires in this country under this government fas risen exponentially. Their policies have always benefitted the super-rich and to hell with the rest of us.

I’ll take my chances with Labour.

There's a big headline today about labour. If they win, dont own a home , car , pension or try to save. And don't even think of trying to leave your kids anything (of older kids don't expect any inheritance) because labour will see to it that they bleed you dry.

Doesn’t sound like propaganda at all……

Anyway, if the Conservatives get in again; don’t even attempt to afford a home due to sky high interest rates, kids being taught by unqualified teachers, can’t get a dentist appointment for love nor money, huge queues in A&E because the system has broken down, Covid cover ups and lie after lie, housing crisis. I could go on.

I am genuinely baffled as to how anyone can vote them in again.

Well if you think your taxes are high now, just you wait!!! Labour have many more up their sleeve. They are going to tax everything - literally the shirt on your back. So buckle up.

I saw the headline. It’s the top story in the Daily Mail. The primary tory propaganda machine has been getting increasingly hysterical over the last couple of weeks, culminating in this bullshit.

Trouble is, people like the poster you’re replying to read it and actually believe it 🙄

cariadlet · 04/07/2024 07:54

I've always voted Labour, LibDem or Green.

I'm reluctant to vote for any of those this time as they can't define what a woman is and would let men in our spaces.

Kemi Badenoch has been great on safeguarding women and children but I don't like her economic policies. Would never vote Tory. The last 14 years have been disastrous for public services and for the poorest and most vulnerable in society.

UKIP and Reform are obsessed with refugees and migrants. Some of their candidates are racist and some are conspiracy theorists.

Some of the SDP manifesto seems ok and some seems good but I don't have a candidate in my constituency.

I'm voting Party of Women as a protest vote.

Those people will still exist with Labour, I am afraid. Do you seriously believe it will change? It won't. Labour have already said they don't have the money to invest in the infrastructure or increase benefits. We are fortunate to live in a society where we have foodbanks, and clothes banks and even people that do not work for a living can live comfortably.

The housing crisis is expected to worsen, because Labour have no immigration policy at all, so there will be more people in temp or no accommodation in the future not less.

Food banks are not a good thing 😭 many many people who don't work for what ever reason do not live comfortably as I said some people can't feed their children afford gas/electric. Etc that's not comfortably

Andthereitis · 04/07/2024 07:54

The shirt on your back has already been taxed. It’s called VAT.

And actually, I don’t mind paying more tax if it goes to improving public services. What I object to is paying high amounts of tax so the likes of Michelle Mone can get billions of public funds from get mates.

Aussieland · 04/07/2024 07:57

Theweepywillow · 04/07/2024 07:40

It’s the opposite though isn’t it, we will all pay more tax, the low and high earners alike, even pensioners.

You are all already paying more tax (oh except the rich) and getting less. The problem is that the Tories are taxing heavily but not giving you anything for it. Labour would tax more, leaning that towards higher earners but spend it on public services. Very different

Moonshiners · 04/07/2024 07:58

I always vote anyone that gets rid of the Tories. Can't believe people think they care about women. 14 fucking years they had to sort this out and they failed.

Well it is the truth.

Starmer intends to raise taxes across the board and significantly, he has said so himself.

Starmer intends to reopen the brexit wars, he has said so himself, so that is a potential civil war in the making

Starmer intends to flood the education system with thousands of unfunded private school kids, there is no plan as to how the schools will cope, he has said so himself.

Starmer does not recognise women, he has said so himself, he intends to get the GRC through the backdoor and we will be back to the dark days of being silenced for daring to voice our fears about men invading womens spaces.

Starmer said Labour intend to tax pensioners, he has said so himself.

All of these things he has said himself, it is the truth, Starmer has said so repeatedly and it is not propaganda at all, it is based on the Labour manifesto and policy.

I voted Green in my recent local elections, but it's got to be Labour for this big one, and boy have the Conservatives left them a mess to sort out!

Well surely this shouldn’t bother you @Hummingbird75. With your magical powers to predict the future, you can surely insulate yourself by picking the winning lottery numbers, making lucrative sporting bets, picking the best tech unicorn to invest in….

No, but I am voting Conservative for the first time and because I live in a seat tipped to go red after 100 blue years my vote could actually make a difference.

While I hated what they did win Iraq, this is a totally different group of people with different policies etc. You are cutting off your nose to give a message about something most of them had no hand in and may have not agreed with! And saying its better that the Tories are destroying lives now than someone who is long retired did something awful.

It is not magic, I just listened to Sir Keir Starmer tell us all during the debates. I listened to every word he said, and he absolutely intends to raise taxes, yes. Much more than you think. So buckle up, as I said before.

You’re being ridiculous.
I assume you’re a Tory bot so I’m not going to engage beyond this.

I wish he would look to rejoin Europe (although he’s been crystal clear he won’t). The vast majority of people regret brexit and want to rejoin, so it would be a popular policy decision.

Let’s not forget that brexit is costing this country billions every year.

Noshowlomo · 04/07/2024 08:02

I won’t be voting labour for the first time in my life (I’m 43) because they don’t know what a woman is, let alone know how to protect us.
Many GC people feel this way.
However, instagram is full of trans rights posts about how awful labour are and how LGBTQ+ could never trust a labour government. Labour seem to want to take a middle ground and it hasn’t helped with either view

daisychain01 · 04/07/2024 08:02

A quick google will detail they have proven they cannot run a budget.

Who's "they"? How can a new Labour Government who haven't run a budget yet have already proven they can't run a budget? Makes zero sense.

the last thing people should do is Google anything. That's like saying "Go onto X/Twitter to form your political view" no flippin way.

Aussieland · 04/07/2024 08:04

Hummingbird75 · 04/07/2024 07:59

So how do you think Labour will help you if they can't even see you are a 'woman' my friend?

I imagine they know you are a human though and require housing, food, healthcare, education etc. Which would go a fair way towards an improved quality of life whoever you are.
When a country is deteriorating there is always a focus for the "problem" so you can be more angry at that group than at the people in power who are causing the problem. In the past they have had women, Jews, Muslims. Now its transwomen. They aren't the problem. The country being ground into the dirt is the problem.
