Voting labour for the first time. Anyone else?

Labour are far from perfect, but I like Keir Starmer and I think they are the best party to turn things around from the awful mess the incumbents have got us into.

He’s not glossy or witty or funny, but he seems decent - (he clearly has a wonderful wife and that only reflects well on him!)

Anyway, just curious - anyone else voting Labour for the first time? I’m 40 by the way and in the south east.

No..so many reasons. Some being:
Tax
Women's rights
Schooling
Running of the NHS
A quick google will detail they have proven they cannot run a budget. Recent/current examples.

I'm interested to know who you are voting for @Fuzziduck?

Please tell me it's not the Tories if your list is what you care about?

Tax levels the highest ever and as for the NHS....

This is also interesting regarding your point about the budget. It talks about borrowing and repaying of the national debt.

"First, Labour borrows less than the Conservatives. The data shows that.

And second, Labour has always repaid debt more often than the Conservatives and has always repaid more debt, on average."

No. Unsure who I will be voting for but it will not be Labour.

AccidentallyWesAnderson · 04/07/2024 07:34

Not everyone on the Feminism board who cares about women's rights to sex based spaces and sports (not 'trans issues') automatically votes Tory! I could never vote for them and have more years of the shit show we have now. They are stating what a woman is to get votes, not because they give a shiny shite about any rights.

By no means a fan of Labour but it surely can't get any worse, especially here in Scotland. I hope the SNP get a pasting and we can work on the women's rights stuff.

What’s wrong with paying more tax?

Well exactly, I would happily pay more tax if it benefited the whole country.

Also, when you consider the waste of the Conservative government. Channeling money through contracting into the pockets of themselves and their friends. Appropriate use of funds on its own would allow Labour to bridge some of the gap in spending.

Not for the first time but as we don't have PR (what a missed chance that was, Mr Blair) they're effectively the only party en masse that can get this money minded vicious current bunch out where we live. If we lived in a lib dem area I'd hold my nose and vote for them.

Anyone who thinks the Tories are a. fiscally responsible or b. genuinely gives a monkey about working class women in particular after the majority of their wilfully cruel not to say sadistic policies of the last 14 years must have been living in a box.

Excatly. “Fiscally responsible” yet wasted about £50 billion on failed measures during Covid and still with among the worst outcomes in Europe. Fiscally responsible and yet the UK has the highest energy costs in Europe. Fiscally responsible and yet their Brexit has destroyed business investment in the economy. Fiscally responsible and yet many people under 40 can’t afford to buy homes. Fiscally responsible and yet the the bottom quarter of earners in the UK are among the worst off and with among the worst living standards in Europe.

Not a chance I would vote for Labour.
I am a woman, and do not have a penis. I have dds that require a full identity.
There is only one party that recognises women and girls, and that is the conservatives, so I will vote for them.

I am quite frankly extremely worried about Labour completely crashing the economy as they always do, and causing mass unemployment. Taxing us even more will mean people will give up working. The hard left are sitting handsomely out of sight but holding the reins, and still plan to flatten ambition, energy and drive with their socialism.

Anyone saying what is wrong with paying more and more tax clearly are not contributing very much to society in the first place. A mass exodus of professionals will be next...and capital flight.

There's a big headline today about labour. If they win, dont own a home , car , pension or try to save. And don't even think of trying to leave your kids anything (of older kids don't expect any inheritance) because labour will see to it that they bleed you dry.

Utterly depressing and why I’m voting conservative. I know they won’t win but they need seats to stop Labour wrecking the country for anyone who earns over 50K. .

Teeeens33 · 04/07/2024 07:37

I'm voting Labour in the hope they will lift people out of poverty.

Just as happened in 97 with the National Minimum Wage and Sure Start, to name but two policies.

We heard that all before. It didn't happen previously and it won't happen again.

Proudtobeanortherner · 04/07/2024 07:40

I’m voting Tory 🤮 to protect my daughters from the sc*mbags who want them pregnant, barefoot and tied to the kitchen sink and to protect everyone else from a party that has proven time and time again (historically) that it cannot be trusted with pocket money let alone a country’s economy.

It’s the opposite though isn’t it, we will all pay more tax, the low and high earners alike, even pensioners.

Voting Tory for the first time ever, for Women's rights. Am quite terrified what Labour will do to Women and I have 2x DD.
I fully expect labour to win and sadly expect to have womens rights stripped away quite quickly after, until they wake up and start panicking and it'll be too late.

Labour are going to allow all sorts of fetishism in men to ID into women and I fear for my DD future. Lucky I hold citizenship to another country also and can leave if need be.

Where are you getting this from though?

Goldenbear · 04/07/2024 07:42

Yes, DH and I - previously voted Green.

Don’t used a biased source to prove your argument. I’m not disagreeing with you, but the Guardian is centre left and will never come out with “facts” which are positive about the Tories. Just saying

Goldenbear · 04/07/2024 07:43

I tell a lie 97 was my first vote at 18 and I voted Labour then.

Didimum · 04/07/2024 07:44

And if I hear ‘highest taxes in 70yrs’ again I’m going to vomit. Society has more complex needs than 70yrs ago, than even 40yrs ago. Covid and Russia have added more complexities on top of that. Many systems need reforming – and you can’t do that without money to both fund the reform and keep adequate services running.

Combattingthemoaners · 04/07/2024 07:41

Starmer thinks we have penises and has very publicly said so, multiple times, he is very supportive of trans rights and has nothing to say about women's rights. That is where it is coming from, the horses mouth so to speak.

Theweepywillow · 04/07/2024 07:40

It’s the opposite though isn’t it, we will all pay more tax, the low and high earners alike, even pensioners.

We all have our reasons to vote that's my reason .

There are people that can't feed their kids. End up at food banks, going with out gas /electric familys on temporary accommodation. That matters to me

kirbykirby · 04/07/2024 07:46

Nope. They are going to disincentive working hard/saving/being financially prudent even more.

I expect the benefits bill will massively increase while the tax take collapses.

VestaTilley · 04/07/2024 07:46

No. After being a life long Labour voter, I stopped voting for them in 2017. I’ve been spoiling my ballot since and today will vote SDP.

DontBiteTheCat · 04/07/2024 07:46

They voted to cut taxes on champagne the same day they voted to cut funding to rebuild schools.

Rape convictions in 2022 stood at 459 out of 70,633 reported cases. 100,000 more children are living in poverty than this time last year, the average kid won’t be able to afford to go to University (but they can do national service instead!), mental health services, domestic abuse services, sure start centres have disappeared and yet people claim the Tory’s give a shit about women’s rights?! They know how to parrot the definition of a woman but they do not give a single fuck about any of us, or your daughters.

iamtheblcksheep · 04/07/2024 07:47

It would be a cold day in hell before I voted for labour.

I don’t want my daughter sharing a changing room with a man. That’s enough of an issue before I get to anything else they might do that I disagree with

Hummingbird75 · 04/07/2024 07:47

Teeeens33 · 04/07/2024 07:45

Those people will still exist with Labour, I am afraid. Do you seriously believe it will change? It won't. Labour have already said they don't have the money to invest in the infrastructure or increase benefits. We are fortunate to live in a society where we have foodbanks, and clothes banks and even people that do not work for a living can live comfortably.

The housing crisis is expected to worsen, because Labour have no immigration policy at all, so there will be more people in temp or no accommodation in the future not less.

Dontknowwhattodo2024 · 04/07/2024 07:48

No promised myself I’d never vote Labour again after Tony Blair, Iraq war. Dreadful time!
