Voting labour for the first time. Anyone else?

Labour are far from perfect, but I like Keir Starmer and I think they are the best party to turn things around from the awful mess the incumbents have got us into.

He’s not glossy or witty or funny, but he seems decent - (he clearly has a wonderful wife and that only reflects well on him!)

Anyway, just curious - anyone else voting Labour for the first time? I’m 40 by the way and in the south east.

What's funny is the utter moral outrage and panic from some people about some thing that isn't even anything to do with labour.

As a female leftie of a certain age, I took particular offence at being described “the bearded lefties”.

Edited

I have pcos so I'm a proud bearded lefty woman 😂

Ridiculous.

As a parent of autistic children, it’s absolutely not ridiculous. Along with those who have suffered severe abuse in childhood, they are most likely to be groomed by gender ideology and Labour as a party backs it fully.

The mysterious Hard Left.... AKA Momentum... inside the Labour party... describe themselves as Socialists... don't be fooled they haven't gone away

There's absolutely nothing "Hard Left" about Momentum ffs

All that daily tweezering I do, honestly. I need to find a more permanent solution. I’ll be on Style & Beauty soon.

I’m middle England. Under Tories my mortgage has gone up, my energy bills have gone up, my food bills have gone up, the beaches I used to go are no longer safe to swim in because they’re full of shit. I can’t get a GP appointment, I dread any time my kids might need to go to A&E. I had to move my daughter from state to private school because her state school was completely unable to manage disruptive behaviour - too few teachers/teaching assistants for the class sizes and no funding for PRUs or SEND provisions.

Oh, and my taxes have gone up to the highest level they’ve ever been.

The Tories have allowed the top 1% to get richer and richer. The number of billionaires in this country under this government fas risen exponentially. Their policies have always benefitted the super-rich and to hell with the rest of us.

I’ll take my chances with Labour.

And like I said, the Tories have been crap, and I agreed - let Labour have a chance. Let’s see what they do to turn it around. I will be the first to hold my hands up if things improve under their leadership, but I sense people already making excuses for them ‘…well it’s not gonna be sorted for a loooong while, as will take time (years!?) to repair the mess…’. Nope. We will expect some improvement in the next four years. And definitely not a downward turn. And if not - out they go. I’m being fair here. Happy to let them have a go….

No. I usually vote Labour/lib Dem but am voting for party of women to register my discontent with all of the parties in protecting women's rights. If that wasn't sn option I'd spoil my ballot. I can't understand a single woman voting for labour.

100% agree
I hope it makes massive dent in the votes if more women realise what fear and anxiety they have caused to all involved and affected by the safe spaces debacle.

dont trust them one jot

NasiDagang · 04/07/2024 12:04

You are talking about it like it is a football team, let them have a go?!
You do know Labour will bankrupt the country potentially for generations, it is not a party game where everyone gets their turn. It has deadly serious consequences for everyone.

Of course Momentum represent the (very) far left of Labour. How would you describe them?? (Ffs)

Momentum are very hard left. Some pp are batshit. Are they even further left - communists.

cavalier · 04/07/2024 12:08

Fightthepower · 04/07/2024 11:17

are you referring to the NHS and rail strikes that the Tories appear to be incapable of resolving?

That’s ok .. Labour will bow down and the whole country will be on strike like in tbe late 70s .. “winter of discontent “ it’s all on Google wiki

Hummingbird75 · 04/07/2024 12:09

Yes 3 day weeks and no electricity and an IMF bailout to keep the country afloat was Labour's 'gift' to us all.

What's left of Socialist Labour, and a pale imitation of what used to actually pass as socialist.

If they're your "hard left", then presumably in your head the likes of Braverman is a moderate centrist.

I agree. But we know that it’s going to be a Labour landslide here. Considering only two years ago that it was widely said that Labour would never get into power again, just shows how far the Tories have gone downwards. I’m pissed of with Sunak as he did nothing to avoid this. In fact he did nothing full stop. And here we are. On the precipice of God knows what. I know Labour are shit, as do you, but to get others to realise that, especially the newer generation of voters (who don’t remember what it’s really like under Labour), we have to let them have this one. Too late to accept anything else. I was saying that I’m prepared to see if ‘old’ lefty Labour have gone, as I have little choice. I know deep down that they will drag us down the road of old, but just stating that this is their chance. If they don’t deliver in the next four years, the new generation of voters will know what we know.

Yes 3 day weeks and no electricity and an IMF bailout to keep the country afloat was Labour's 'gift' to us all.

It was Edward Heath, a Conservative PM who introduced the three day week.

Rayner is the very pin up girl of the hard left and could be deputy PM or did you expect us not to notice??

Just cannot believe that Momentum can be anything other that hard left. Again, I repeat, how would you describe them, bearing in mind the other options are centre, or soft left?

This is a history lesson for everyone on MN on what Labour did to our country not so long ago:

https://www.historyhit.com/when-the-lights-went-out-in-britain-the-story-of-the-three-day-working-week/

We are in deep shit if they get in again.

Wasn’t Edward heath conservative?

Hummingbird75 · 04/07/2024 12:16

Labour was in power in the winter of discontent when we barely survived (1979) People have very short memories.

Boltonb · 04/07/2024 12:16

Yes, me. Not completely comfortable voting for Labour, as I do have some concerns. But on balance, I believe I did the right thing.

Certainly don’t agree with their policies on everything, but on the majority of issues that concern me the most, we’re generally aligned

cavalier · 04/07/2024 12:17

Hummingbird75 · 04/07/2024 10:24

Because they keep us safely in a dangerous world, and are willing to invest in defence. The bearded lefties will be dismantling that in no time.

Because the conservatives recognise women and girls

The conservatives are traditionally and notoriously pro business and good for the economy.

Conservatives can be trusted.

Labour is massive leap into the unknown, and it is what is not being said that is worrying people, and the prospect of a hard left government in less than 12 months time...

They hate our country but let it all come to fruition
the strikes the bankruptcy, cutting defence
more wokery … biologically born females nervous of predatory men taking advantage of the “licence “ to invade our safe spaces.
The country suffering more with the NHS as more and more and more illegal immigrants are sent over here from France because they will be sending them here with their far right party soon to be .
People wjll just have to see for themselves what past labour governments have inflicted on UK … Many too young and not lived through the dark days of Labour socialism and utopian ideals that are all very wonderful but just don’t work in the real world
