Voting labour for the first time. Anyone else?

Labour are far from perfect, but I like Keir Starmer and I think they are the best party to turn things around from the awful mess the incumbents have got us into.

He’s not glossy or witty or funny, but he seems decent - (he clearly has a wonderful wife and that only reflects well on him!)

Anyway, just curious - anyone else voting Labour for the first time? I’m 40 by the way and in the south east.

As a parent of autistic children, it’s absolutely not ridiculous. Along with those who have suffered severe abuse in childhood, they are most likely to be groomed by gender ideology and Labour as a party backs it fully.

Of course it's ridiculous to say anyone voting Labour is voting to abuse children. Ridiculous and hyperbolic.

This is a history lesson for everyone on MN on what Labour did to our country not so long ago:

https://www.historyhit.com/when-the-lights-went-out-in-britain-the-story-of-the-three-day-working-week/

We are in deep shit if they get in again.

This did not happen under Labour.

Aye, "Labour" did that. Nothing at all to do with the UK being utterly doomed as soon as the bills for WWII became due, living on the never never for decades beforehand, through mainly Conservative governments that totally failed to address the impending collapse of UK industries. Nope, it was ALL Labour's fault, despite being at the controls for five bloody minutes compared to the Tories 😆

Labour was in power in the winter of discontent when we barely survived (1979) People have very short memories.

All the things that happened in the last 14 years is far, far more relevant than something that happened 45 years ago. Can't believe this needs pointing out.

Rayner is the very pin up girl of the hard left and could be deputy PM or did you expect us not to notice??

Absolutely. An ally of Corbyn, who was so far to the left, he was off the scale. Do we think Rayner isn’t already in discussions with her far lefty friends hiding on the fringes of the party? Also strong ties with the Unionists? Between them they
will destroy what’s left of our country. Awful woman, but far stronger than Starmer.

They hate our country but let it all come to fruition
the strikes the bankruptcy, cutting defence
more wokery … biologically born females nervous of predatory men taking advantage of the “licence “ to invade our safe spaces.
The country suffering more with the NHS as more and more and more illegal immigrants are sent over here from France because they will be sending them here with their far right party soon to be .
People wjll just have to see for themselves what past labour governments have inflicted on UK … Many too young and not lived through the dark days of Labour socialism and utopian ideals that are all very wonderful but just don’t work in the real world

All of that has been happening and will continue to happen under the tories.

Hothotdamage · 04/07/2024 12:20

Not so long ago , it was 50 years ago!

What scale is this then? The same batshit one inside your head that places Momentum on the "Hard Left"?

It’s embarrassing for @Hummingbird75 but he/she has no shame in lying about something so easily face checked.

Yes 3 day weeks and no electricity and an IMF bailout to keep the country afloat was Labour's 'gift' to us all.

The 3 day week was under Ted Heath. A Tory.
Ffs.

Only same as Labour holding the Tories to blame years after Thatcher. In fact there are still members of Labour who hold her to account for things happening today. During their periods of being in charge, everything that went wrong was because of Thatcher according to some in the Labour Party.

Storing ties with the Unionists? Is that the same Unionists who believe were better as a United Kingdom? Or the Ulster Unionists who were the tail who wagged the dog during Brexit? Or did you actually mean to say the unions? What I know is that things worked better, people had better healthcare, life chances and food banks weren’t a thing under the last Labour government. What have we got now? Brexit, the debacle of HS2, billions wasted by Sunak, people dying prematurely because of poor healthcare, housing costs unaffordable for our youngsters and higher education funding that doesn’t work for the taxpayer, the institution or the individual. But sure, let’s be frightened by Labour.

Jeez. Answer the question. Where would you put Momentum? Centre left, soft left? Read up on anything to do with momentum - all state that they are far/hard left.

Well, to be fair, Thatcher is your original Neoliberal, so she absolutely is accountable for things still going on in the UK today. As is Blair, and every other PM since and between the two who has tried to pander to the UK's ridiculous expectation of world-leading public service, but low-to non-existent taxation.

If there is anything to be said for the past five years, at least the Tories had the decency to not to even pretend to give a shit about the state of public sector service while ramping taxes ever upwards. There's a fundamental honesty there.

Racheltension1 · 04/07/2024 12:28

Haha I love the way people go back to that 'winter of discontent' bollocks. It was almost half a bloody century ago!!! As if its all the same people in the Labour party today, the country's the same, the world is the same....absolutely desperate stuff 🥱

Meant Unions. Auto corrected. Unions are good to have to protect employees. But when given too much power, as given by Labour in the past, we then get our economy coming to a stand still and employers held to ransom by unrealistic demands. Will be interesting to see how they handle the ongoing junior doctors’ strikes. That will be the bench mark to how things are going to go with other workers, and how far they can push for above inflation pay rises.

RosaRoja · 04/07/2024 12:31

Desperate stuff. Then you say Partygate and it’s like “who even cares anymore”? Mumsnet will be better without these threads from tomorrow onwards, one hopes.

Racheltension1 · 04/07/2024 12:32

'Shat on by Tories, shovelled up by Labour' as the great Uncle Monty said....and that's all it is, over and over and over again. Depressing.

But that’s rubbish. Thatcher was last in power 34 years ago. There have been both Labour and Tory governments since then, who have had the chance to change her ‘legacy’. Subsequent governments left things in place, because they realised she was right.

Or we could talk about the brink of bankruptcy during the last Labour government which was a mere 14 years ago.
