Voting labour for the first time. Anyone else?

Labour are far from perfect, but I like Keir Starmer and I think they are the best party to turn things around from the awful mess the incumbents have got us into.

He’s not glossy or witty or funny, but he seems decent - (he clearly has a wonderful wife and that only reflects well on him!)

Anyway, just curious - anyone else voting Labour for the first time? I’m 40 by the way and in the south east.

Rayner has her eyes firmly on the prize. She will let Starmer do the heavy lifting and then the dark horses in the positions of power will remove the fig leaf that is Starmer. I have no doubt we could end up with our first hard left government in a few months from now.

Very carefully planned.
Just like the strikes. They know exactly what they are doing.

are you referring to the NHS and rail strikes that the Tories appear to be incapable of resolving?

Labour and the unions coordinated those strikes deliberately to undermine the conservative government. Everyone knows that. Most of them have been resolved, not surprising - what a coincidence.

Most people can see through what is happening thank goodness.

No, no - it’s only you.

GasPanic · 04/07/2024 11:24

No.

I predict within 12 months people will be begging for the Tories back due to the huge tax rises incoming.

I voted Labour in 1997 then moved somewhere they didn’t stand a chance. Moved again recently and current constituency has never voted Labour, been Tory all but twice in 100 years but is currently a tight race with Tories so will vote Labour along with first time voting DC.

Stepmum is a first time Labour voter this morning though won’t make a difference where she is .

You've been reading The Telegraph?

eyeblob · 04/07/2024 11:30

I'm a Labour voter anyway. Have asked my candidate about women's safe spaces and happy with their reply. Interestingly some are not voting for the Labour candidate because of their stance on trans rights! Pretty safe tory seat but interesting times so who knows.

Hummingbird75 · 04/07/2024 11:11

We will still be here, thanks. Just as we have been for the last decade.

The conservatives for all of their faults are incredibly trustworthy when it comes to the economy, women's rights, national security and whilst the whole world seems to be moving to the right for all of the reasons we know, we have fought for democracy tooth and nail. Labour are just about to take that all away from us IF they get in.

😂

You've overplayed your hand there. They're so trusted with the economy why did they cause all of our mortgages to shoot through the roof?

Agree - mortgage rates have probably had the single biggest impact on my quality of life in the last few years.

This happening under the Tories.

Some posters seem to be living in a crazy looking glass world where all that the Tories have done in the last 14 years is actually the fault of Labour.

Jesus. Where is the sensible conversation on this issue? When did it all become so aggressive and hate-filled (on both sides)?

I have more balanced, informed discussions about gender identity with my 15yo niece. For the record, I'm a feminist. But this kind of vitriol is why we'll never make any progress.

Molojo · 04/07/2024 11:43

As a disabled woman I find it sad that people are still willing to vote Tory and to suggest it's down to them knowing what a women is and expecting them to protect single sex spaces. When they already have a proven track record they don't care about the more vulnerable in society, the disabled and worse will use them as scapegoats, encouraging public demonisation.

'The UN committee said the UK government had “failed to take all appropriate measures to address grave and systematic violations” of disabled people’s human rights and had “failed to eliminate the root causes of inequality and discrimination” since November 2016'. 7yrs and UN review found Tories had failed to improve anything and even regressed in some areas.

There was also EHRC investigation raised to examine concerns that successive secretaries of state may have broken the Equality Act in the way their department has carried out benefit assessments. The work capability assessment (WCA) and personal independence payment (PIP)It will focus on failures to make reasonable adjustments for people with mental distress and learning difficulties. The commission will also be assessing whether DWP breached its obligations under the Equality Act’s public sector equality duty.

A long line of national flags in two rows leading up to a cream coloured stone building which says United Nations

Seven years on and no progress on disability rights by UK government, says UN

The UK government has made “no significant progress” in the more than seven years since it was found guilty of “grave and systematic” violations of the UN disability convention, it has been told by…

I voted Labour anyway, so I'm not being critical - just interested.

Was about protecting women's space and making 3rd spaces, woman's sports for natel women and that women should be free to raise these concerns without fear of being abused or intimidated. I was plesently surprised!

Just went with my Nan to vote. Both voted Lib Dem, me tactically. Nan as that's who she wants to vote for, she's a life long Tory.

The mysterious "They".....

Presumably identified by the Mail, or the Torygraph.

I swear some of the poster in this thread are living in some sort of psychosis-induced alternate reality.

"The Hard Left", supposedly hiding inside the Labour party, despite the fact there's been hardly anything you could describe as remotely left-leaning at all about the Labour Party for years.

It's almost as if people are reading right-wing shitrags and actually believing the utter tripe printed in them, but nobody could be that utterly dense and still find their way onto the internet, so it's clearly a wind-up.

Well if they're doing it now, then it's the Tories that did it not labour.

As a female leftie of a certain age, I took particular offence at being described “the bearded lefties”.

The mysterious Hard Left.... AKA Momentum... inside the Labour party... describe themselves as Socialists... don't be fooled they haven't gone away

It's time for real change
