Voting labour for the first time. Anyone else?

Labour are far from perfect, but I like Keir Starmer and I think they are the best party to turn things around from the awful mess the incumbents have got us into.

He’s not glossy or witty or funny, but he seems decent - (he clearly has a wonderful wife and that only reflects well on him!)

Anyway, just curious - anyone else voting Labour for the first time? I’m 40 by the way and in the south east.

I’ve not read the manifesto cover to cover, but surely a 25k one-off tax would have made headlines..? Literally millions of people own homes worth over 500k. I would love to see your source for this.

It is in the telegraph today

Voting Tory for the first time ever, for Women's rights. Am quite terrified what Labour will do to Women and I have 2x DD.
I fully expect labour to win and sadly expect to have womens rights stripped away quite quickly after, until they wake up and start panicking and it'll be too late.

Labour are going to allow all sorts of fetishism in men to ID into women and I fear for my DD future. Lucky I hold citizenship to another country also and can leave if need be.

Do send a postcard.

The NHS has had tens of billions poured into it for heavens sake. It is a failed model and can not possibly serve the health need of 70 million that are ageing so rapidly.

People need to wise up.
The NHS is set to fail under any party. It needs to be overhauled urgently.

This government has put more money into the NHS than Tony Blair did.

The issue is it's inefficient, and the costs of obesity and diabetes are crippling it.

No government seems able or willing to take on the food manufacturers, tax junk food or make people take more responsibility for their health.

Which bit of what i said was a lie? Males are being allowed into female spaces now. Women are being bullied and harassed for being gender critical now. Under the tories. The Tories let this happen. In some cases they've actually done it themselves. They let males into female spaces, they let males into female wards, rape crisis centres, changing rooms, toilets. They created this.

It beggars belief that anyone thinks that the tories will suddenly do something about it now when they've failed to do so for 14 years. All they've said now is they'll look at the equality act - with no actual firm promise of how it what they will do, or how that will change anything in the real world. In reality, they will continue to do nothing, as they have done for 14 years.

At least labour have said they intend to protect safe spaces and keir has openly agreed with the biological definition of women. Keir had to agree that some women have penises, because legally they do, under the fallacy that is a GRC. No party has committed to repealing the GRC.

That is untrue, legally every school and company etc have to provide a single sex toilet. This was introduced under the conservatives.

This will be abolished under Labour.

I think this claim has been debunked in another thread if not this one. If I find it I will share it. Another claim to try and scare people into thinking taxes are bad. I mean they are bad if they are focused on the lowest earners and then given to your mates but luckily that is not what Labour are suggesting

Drfosters · 04/07/2024 10:09

Also I forgot one of the other reasons I would never vote labour is because he said ‘on the side of working people’ but he didn’t mean me. Am I not a worker because I earn a higher salary (and even then it isn’t super high)? After studying professional exams until my mid twenties often going to classes after work, not being able to afford to take more than 4 months maternity leave, having had to work several jobs (used to work on the day and do another after kids in bed) he now deems me so privileged that I am no longer a ‘working person’ and he wants to tax my wealth which I saved by not going on holidays or buying expensive things. I finally am at the place where we can go it was worth the sacrifice but now I’m privileged so wants to strip my pensions and make me pay more tax on my house etc. Made my blood boil!

Where's the line in the Labour manifesto that says they are going to abolish this in schools?

If you think the conservatives have been doing a good job of running the NHS then there really is no hope for you

And if you think Labour can turn the NHS around then there really is no hope for you! 🤦‍♀️

Labour don't believe women even exist, so how can we keep anything single sex? They are going to force GRC through the back door, meaning MORE men not less will be insisting it is their right.

How can you not know this? It beggars belief.

I found this really interesting and may change your views somewhat. I thought he was fairly boring but was actually pleasantly surprised that he is through and through a believer in things like the NHS and unions and all the other things that true socialism involves (which is NOT far left as some up thread said)

The enigma of Keir Starmer - podcast

By the end of the week, Keir Starmer could be the UK’s next prime minister. Why do voters in the UK general election feel they don’t know him?

listsandbudgets · 04/07/2024 09:19

Also I want a ceasefire in Gaza and Starmer wants a "humanitarian pause" .. in other words feed them, tend their wounds and THEN kill them.

I want my dd to have female only spaces

I want my DS not to be indoctrinated with left wing twaddle in schools where everyone is pulled dow. To the level of the least academic.. and yes it happens.

I want investors to have an incentive to invest in the UK

I want my mum not to pay extra tax on her pension ..

I fully accept it will be a resounding victory for Labour tonight but whether it will be a victory for your families and your future remai s to be seen

You do know that the extra tax on pensions is entirely the result of Sunak’s decision to not allow personal allowances to rise?
And I expect investment in the UK to increase as Labour are, rightly or wrongly, less likely to let struggling businesses fail.

Exactly. And if you read the article the language is all 'could', 'may', 'might'. In other words, it's another made-up bollocks, scaremongering article. I'm amazed the Torygraph and the DM haven't learned a thing since Brexit – the Leave campaign's Project Fear backfired spectacularly, as theirs will today. The public sees through it now.

Lupina12 · 04/07/2024 10:14

wickerpram · 04/07/2024 09:09

I'm voting Labour today. And for those who don't because of the women's rights issue and just want you to consider the fact that Tory's also do not give a shiny shit about women's rights. It's just they hate Trans people more. I have met many backbench tories in my life and I can say, hand on heart they are some of the most arrogant self interested bigoted men (mostly men). I had a conversation with one about teenage pregnancies back when it was an issue and the vile stuff he was coming out with (that they are just slags etc).
Yes, of course women's rights are important. But to say that the tories care about women is utter BS. Their austerity measures impact WOMEN the most. It is WOMEN that turn to food banks to feed their families. It is WOMEN that have to give up their careers because of crippling childcare costs. It is WOMEN who are least likely to get on the property ladder.

Yes, yes, Labour isn't perfect. But if you actually give a shit about real women's day to day lives then GET THE TORIES OUT.

Well said!

Nope. Womens’s rights, I.D, ULEZ, NHS ,taxes & more.

I won’t vote CP either as they hate animals.

I won’t waste my vote though. I will get my DD to choose a box.

Me too, fully holding my nose doing so but the choice where I am is between the two. It’s not just women’s rights (and that’s far more than just the trans ideology) that Labour are obviously failing to address, their plan for education is piss poor and that’s a huge issue for me. I have no issue with our current conservative MP so not worth spoiling my ballot.

Me too too!

Id rather stick with the tories than let muppet Starmer and crazy Rayner do an even worse job of things.

Cant understand any woman voting for Labour. Terrifying.
