Voting labour for the first time. Anyone else?

Lupina12 · 04/07/2024 06:31

Labour are far from perfect, but I like Keir Starmer and I think they are the best party to turn things around from the awful mess the incumbents have got us into.

He’s not glossy or witty or funny, but he seems decent - (he clearly has a wonderful wife and that only reflects well on him!)

Anyway, just curious - anyone else voting Labour for the first time? I’m 40 by the way and in the south east.

Well that was what I was going to do begrudgingly. We need to get the tories out.

But then last night I saw David Lammy post. Which has just been deleted. Was that true what he said on radio 5?

We can’t have that man in a prime cabinet position. Absolutely outrageous behaviour and this is supposed to be him on his best behaviour. That’s terrifying!

I didn't see that thread but I do remember these:

Members of Tottenham Constituency Labour Party, including the Women’s Officer, Disability Officer, LGBT Officer and Secretary, have written to their MP David Lammy to express their outrage at his recent public statements equating women who campaign in support of the Party manifesto and Labour’s Equality Act’s sex-based rights with dinosaurs hoarding their rights. He has also claimed, which they refute, that this was not an issue raised with him, and is not one that is raised on the doorstep. Lammy also made the hugely ignorant claim that cervices can be created by surgery and hormones.

https://labourwomensdeclaration.org.uk/tottenham-dinosaurs-roar-their-dismay-at-the-words-of-their-mp-shadow-justice-secretary-david-lammy/

David Lammy fined £5,000 over 35,000 nuisance calls urging people to vote for him to be London Mayor.

This is a genuine question and I’m interested in your response - do you not think your DDs’ lives will be far more impacted overall by things like a functional healthcare and education system? If the issue is trans women entering women’s toilets and changing rooms, I am honestly struggling to think of a time I’ve noticed this - and under the Equality Act, whatever people’s views on this, trans people do in fact already have the right to do that. On the other hand, I have been personally affected by an incompetent NHS and the cost of living and other issues, which IMO are far more impactful on daily life. I’m not sure what age your DDs are, but are they/are you bringing them up to be LGBT+ allies?

Have you been into an NHS establishment recently and been subjected to the woke handling of gender diversity therein?
Chest feeders is just the tip of the iceberg. All of it for less than 1% of the population.
Being forced to share a ward with men identifying as women.
It’s all well and good criticising the GC until you find yourself in that situation.
There has been some reversal of the NHS gender policies but will Labour endorse them?

Billyballyboo · 04/07/2024 09:48

I won't be voting Labour because I support sex based rights, I don't want unlimited immigration, I hate anti-semitism, and I don't want to see any acceptance of sharia law.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 04/07/2024 09:49

I am voting Labour but have done every time except 2005, when I voted Green (after the Iraq war).

I didn’t like Corbyn but liked Johnson less, and decided to vote Labour last couple of time on the strength of my local MP being great (it’s Labour v Tories two horse race where I now live - didn’t live her until 2009).

Vote for whoever you like but don’t do it for a dishonest reason such as not voting Labour due to tax - Tories have given us the highest taxes for 70 years. Sunak’s figure about Labour putting up taxes has been shown to be based on a lie, so please don’t fall for that.

Sarah2891 · 04/07/2024 09:49

Yes I'm voting Labour too. Can't wait to see the back of the Tories

macaroniandcheeze · 04/07/2024 09:51

Yes but not the first time. 1. I’ve always been a proud Labour voter. And 2. it’s the most likely tactical vote in my area to get the tories out.
Unfortunately my Tory MP is very popular so it’s unlikely here.

I think Keir Starmer is a decent man, I’ve heard good stories about him off the record.

I have hated the last 14 years watching the rich get richer and the poor get poorer under the tories. I fear for ordinary children under their rule. I hope older teens who can vote now remember when the Tory algorithm unfairly gave rich kids better A level results.

But it’s going to a long time to right all the Tory wrongs and people are going to expect quick fixes. Labour will be under massive scrutiny.

I voted Lib Dem once and regretted it. I’d love to vote Green but it’s more important to get the tories out right now. Won’t vote “Reform” or whatever the BNP are calling themselves now because I am not a gullible racist.

The Labour Wealth Tax is being warmed up right now.

We are in for a shock as Labour have kept quiet. They intend to tax bedrooms, square footage of people's gardens, cars, put up the council tax bands, a one off tax for anyone with a property over 500k. So minimum 25k for instance.

And that is just the start I believe.

Edited

Do you have any evidence for these claims please?

Hparker1 · 04/07/2024 09:52

Nope. My Tory MP is brilliant and I want to keep him. There will be a Labour majority and we need some decent, sensible and hard working people in opposition.

thriftyhen · 04/07/2024 09:52

No. The way that Diane Abbott was treated speaks volumes on how they view women, and possibly ethnic minorities. The left of the party have been kept out of the media campaign and I suspect that once Keir Starmer has been leader for 18 months, the left will start jostling for position. Keir Starmer has already shown himself to be weak and has flip-flopped over various policies. I think he has been put forward as the acceptable face of socialism without the strength, conviction or charisma of Blair.

It is buried in their manifesto, or listen to Keir and Ange speak as an option. They are VERY keen to tax anything that moves. The hard left, the ones in the real seat of power in Labour would redistribute entirely. They will do so by stealth.

People should know what they are voting for.

WhotheDickens · 04/07/2024 09:56

I actually think KS is too old for the job.

For a man of 61 he looks unfit and I have fears as to how he would cope with the sheer hard work of international travel and 24/7 responsibility.

All former PMs age twice as fast as anyone else.

I can see him being challenged by the left in the party before long- the likes of Angela R and Rachel R.

ThePenguinIsDrunk · 04/07/2024 09:57

I'm spoiling my ballot this time. In the past I've always voted Green Party or Labour but I can't in all good conscience vote for either this time due to their stances on women's rights and single sex spaces.
I have not seen hide nor hair of any of our candidates so have not been able to find out if our lab candidate is a Rosie Duffield type and our Green Party candidate is full on TWAW and completely dismissed a friend who raised concerns.
I am aware that labour messaging on this has changed a little but I really cannot vote for them at the moment without more concrete assurances.

KS is too old, and more to the point too weak to stand up to the hard left still very much at the centre of 'his' party.

Surely May was older? It’s not like he’s Biden’s age!

if Johnson was deemed ‘fit’ to do the job then I can’t see how Sir Keir wouldn’t be. I mean he’s actually used to doing some actual work unlike Johnson!

Tiddlywinkly · 04/07/2024 10:00

I've spoilt my ballot due to Keir's lack of support for single biological sex spaces. I would have voted for him, I hate what the Tories have done to the NHS etc.

I don’t dismiss your points… but the NHS has been under the incumbent government for 14 years?! It’s hard to see how Labour can be blamed for that.

I agree.

I find it shocking that people don't actually seem to know what the fundamental principles of parties are.

Labour= socialism = re-distribution of wealth. tax the 'rich' [middle earners] and give to the poor (or the unions.)

They aren't about aspiration, personal responsibility, freedom, keeping more of your money, and choice.

I remember when tax was around 98% and all the multi- millionaires left for Switzerland or other countries. The same will happen with non-doms. Instead of living here and spending money which would go into the economy, and pay for benefits and the NHS they will live somewhere else.

Yes the source is @Hummingbird75’s overactive imagination. She said she’s going to leave the country anyway when Labour get in so I don’t know what she’s needlessly lying worrying about.

PerkingFaintly · 04/07/2024 10:04

I've already voted Labour.

I'm a floating voter, so don't always, but there's a real chance for change this time.

I don't expect a Labour government to fulfil all my wishes, but from what I've seen there's a much better chance that they will fulfil at least some of them.

Oh, and that they'll spend less time carpet-bagging the country for their mates.Hmm

Georgieporgypud · 04/07/2024 06:55

I'm voting Labour and I'm very excited to do so. They've got loads in their manifesto to help women, such as overhauling the process for prosecuting rapists, improving domestic violence policing, as well as lots of other stuff - close tax loopholes that big businesses take advantage of, improve education, the nhs, improve policing overall, tackle gangs that traffic people - and I'm looking forward to the grown ups being in charge.

Edited

I’d bet you can’t point to one policy in the manifesto about closing loopholes that big businesses take advantage of. Because there isn’t one.

I’ve not read the manifesto cover to cover, but surely a 25k one-off tax would have made headlines..? Literally millions of people own homes worth over 500k. I would love to see your source for this.

The NHS has had tens of billions poured into it for heavens sake. It is a failed model and can not possibly serve the health need of 70 million that are ageing so rapidly.

People need to wise up.
The NHS is set to fail under any party. It needs to be overhauled urgently.

Labour can't be blamed but they don't have a clear plan on who is a woman. And Harriet Harman is being set up to oversee GRC.
She believes any man (with a penis) who decides he is a woman can use women's spaces.

Georgieporgypud · 04/07/2024 10:07

Hummingbird75 · 04/07/2024 09:41

That is a very weak and untrue reply.

Which bit of what i said was a lie? Males are being allowed into female spaces now. Women are being bullied and harassed for being gender critical now. Under the tories. The Tories let this happen. In some cases they've actually done it themselves. They let males into female spaces, they let males into female wards, rape crisis centres, changing rooms, toilets. They created this.

It beggars belief that anyone thinks that the tories will suddenly do something about it now when they've failed to do so for 14 years. All they've said now is they'll look at the equality act - with no actual firm promise of how it what they will do, or how that will change anything in the real world. In reality, they will continue to do nothing, as they have done for 14 years.

At least labour have said they intend to protect safe spaces and keir has openly agreed with the biological definition of women. Keir had to agree that some women have penises, because legally they do, under the fallacy that is a GRC. No party has committed to repealing the GRC.
