Voting labour for the first time. Anyone else?

Labour are far from perfect, but I like Keir Starmer and I think they are the best party to turn things around from the awful mess the incumbents have got us into.

He’s not glossy or witty or funny, but he seems decent - (he clearly has a wonderful wife and that only reflects well on him!)

Anyway, just curious - anyone else voting Labour for the first time? I’m 40 by the way and in the south east.

Well that was what I was going to do begrudgingly. We need to get the tories out.

But then last night I saw David Lammy post. Which has just been deleted. Was that true what he said on radio 5?

We can’t have that man in a prime cabinet position. Absolutely outrageous behaviour and this is supposed to be him on his best behaviour. That’s terrifying!

I didn't see. What was it?

Enjoy your celebration, truly. But those of us who are not voting Labour can see what’s about to happen. Our disappointment tomorrow will be nothing compared to the disappointment people will feel in 5 years time when little has changed. A short Labour term will just cement another long Tory government in future, where they will win on the bases of ‘told you so’. And the cycle continues…

Well those of us who voted anything but Tory for the last three elections and the Brexit referendum have been proved 100% correct that the Tory’s would be a disaster. So if it’s the Tory’s voters turn to be right, for a change, enjoy yourself! (Though I doubt you are)

WinnieWimbledon · 04/07/2024 09:29

I wouldn’t vote Labour if my arse was on fire 😂

I quite like our Conservative MP. I’ve had several written exchanges with him and been impressed with his thoughtful, considered replies. Hope he gets re-elected.

slippingdowntheabyss · 04/07/2024 09:30

You will be a fool to vote for them.
But you need to learn a lesson.
People want they rights back. They want to go to their doctors this week not in 6 months time. We want to see medical people now. Do you think anything will change under labour. Nothing will change it will cost you more. A couple more years under the new lot will change how you feel.

Scifiiscompletebollocks · 04/07/2024 09:31

I’ve always voted Labour and live in a safe Labour seat.id never vote Tory but due to Labour's position on women’s single sex spaces I’ll hold my nose and vote SDP. I’d vote for party of women if there was a candidate .

This is a genuine question and I’m interested in your response - do you not think your DDs’ lives will be far more impacted overall by things like a functional healthcare and education system? If the issue is trans women entering women’s toilets and changing rooms, I am honestly struggling to think of a time I’ve noticed this - and under the Equality Act, whatever people’s views on this, trans people do in fact already have the right to do that. On the other hand, I have been personally affected by an incompetent NHS and the cost of living and other issues, which IMO are far more impactful on daily life. I’m not sure what age your DDs are, but are they/are you bringing them up to be LGBT+ allies?

Our healthcare and education works very well here (SW) so I have no issues with that, although I am extremely concerned the private schools here will close down and we will be overrun. We have small schools here and could not absorb an exodus of that size and magnitude.

I have seen men in the ladies loo on more than occasion, and teen boys in our changing areas, and it freaked out my young dds. They felt unsafe and did not want to toilet alone. So yes it is an issue.

I am raising my dds to understand how many thousands of years it has taken for women to earn their right to be independent, and how precious it is. I am raising my girls to understand biology and how we are uniquely different. We can give birth for instance, but that comes with responsibility. My girls will respect trans people and call them whatever name they wish to be called, and have no issue with that but will stop short of offering them all of our single sex spaces due to safety and privacy concerns. Moreover, I am raising girls to be assertive and to understand their needs and rights are just as important as those of boys and men. They do not have to give way to men all of the time. They can choose to live full lives.

Hopebridge · 04/07/2024 09:32

I just voted and it was very quiet. Always had to queue before.

Didimum · 04/07/2024 09:33

MaGueule · 04/07/2024 09:27

Same here. But there’s a chance Labour might take the seat away from our current dreadful Conservative MP and I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to lend them a hand.

I am still very much keeping my fingers crossed for our neighbouring constituency, which might well go to the Lib Dems.

Same here! Maybe we are in the same constituency 😂 did you also change boundaries?

Drfosters · 04/07/2024 09:34

Absolutely not.i am actually naturally quite left leaning so should be easily persuaded to vote of then. But So many bad policies telling anyone who remotely works hard at school or isn’t worth bothering as labour will applaud you for getting the good school results then hate you when you earn a decent salary because of those grades , then vilify you for being privileged and strip anything off you you have amassed to donate to those who don’t do as well as you and don’t take personal responsibility for their life choices.

but ultimately it is the women’s rights piece that means I could never bring myself to vote for them. And David lammy ‘men can grow a cervix’ tells me the quality of education of the candidates is lacking.

apart from Rosie Duffield who rocks.

Growlybear83 · 04/07/2024 09:35

I was a member of the Labour Party for several years and have voted labour for most of the last 48 years, but resigned a couple of weeks ago and have voted for the Green Party instead. I've been wavering about leaving the party for some time now, initially because I was concerned with how the party treated Jeremy Corbyn and more recently Diane Abbott, and I don't really have much confidence in Keir Starmer as leader. I was very dismayed by the labour party's stance (or lack of) on Gaza, but the final straw for me came a couple of weeks ago with a local issue when it became very clear that the Labour Party don't give a shit about ordinary people any more.

Georgieporgypud · 04/07/2024 09:35

Gilbertwasawuss · 04/07/2024 09:12

Wouldn't vote Labour if you paid me.

The way they speak about women's rights is disgusting, slimy and evasive.

We are on the precipice of the rights we have fought for, being taken away in favour of men once again.

I would like to remind everyone that marital rape was legal until the 90's and women couldn't get business loans without their husband until the 80's.

We couldn't have a fucking bank account until 1975.

It wasn't that long ago that we were truly second class citizens (and we are not far off that now).

Brave, brave women fought to give us all the option to vote and we each have a responsibility to protect the rights of women in the next generations.

Across the western world, women's rights are being stripped away in numerous areas. It is literally happening before our eyes.

Whether you are accepting of trans ideology or not, anyone with eyeballs can see that these biological men are being favoured over women.

Women are being called misogynistic words, they are being spat at, bullied and fired from their jobs, all because they want to ensure that women's spaces are for women.

The damage that can be done on places like rape crisis centre's is playing out in real time... take a look at Scotland.

Honestly, I feel like so many women are either asleep at the wheel or are terrified to speak out.

And the very fact that women are being harassed and disciplined in jobs should tell everyone exactly what is coming.

Play along, or we will punish you.

Stay sweet and silent and accept whatever we want to do with your rights and spaces.... or else.

Those things are happening under the tories.

There's a big headline today about labour. If they win, dont own a home , car , pension or try to save. And don't even think of trying to leave your kids anything (of older kids don't expect any inheritance) because labour will see to it that they bleed you dry.

As a home owner, that’s worrying. Can you share the link to the headline you saw?

I know this isn’t directed at me so I hope you don’t mind me answering.

Labour have no intention of making healthcare functional for women’s specific health. There’s nothing to show this, no plan to focus on how dismissed women are as a group when looking at female based care.

Their education plan is extremely poor. Utterly unworkable. There is no focus on why current education is failing as a system, and absolutely nothing on making education accessible and workable for those with SEN.

Trans women shouldn’t be in female toilets. Even Starmer has said this (though he’s flip flopping so much on the issue it’s probably just an outright lie for some last minute women appeasing votes).

As for ‘LGBT Allies’, that’s just ‘be kind’ under a different guise. As a bi woman, I’d hope that poster is raising her daughters to understand that self protection for women is far more important that being an ally to another social group.

Wheresthebeach · 04/07/2024 09:39

Women’s rights too big an issue for me to be able to vote Labour

The Labour Wealth Tax is being warmed up right now.

We are in for a shock as Labour have kept quiet. They intend to tax bedrooms, square footage of people's gardens, cars, put up the council tax bands, a one off tax for anyone with a property over 500k. So minimum 25k for instance.

And that is just the start I believe.

Hummingbird75 · 04/07/2024 09:41

That is a very weak and untrue reply.

Thoughtful2355 · 04/07/2024 09:42

We're all voting green. I won't be the reason our country won't change.

sleepyscientist · 04/07/2024 09:42

5475878237NC · 04/07/2024 06:45

No. I usually vote Labour/lib Dem but am voting for party of women to register my discontent with all of the parties in protecting women's rights. If that wasn't sn option I'd spoil my ballot. I can't understand a single woman voting for labour.

Because a large majority of women don't feel threatened by the drama of a few XY individuals in a changing room maybe. I'm politically homeless right now going to vote later and can't face voting for a party wanting to tax education so will likely vote Lib Dem but the tight rains on public spending and tax cut of the conservatives also appeal.

Hummingbird75 · 04/07/2024 09:43

Women voting for Labour are literally turkeys voting for Christmas. It is astonishing to me, that someone would vote away their own rights, even worse that they are also doing that to their own children if they are girls.

Thoughtful2355 · 04/07/2024 09:43

Also met my local lib dem . M and he was a really horrible person with shocking views. Can't vote him no matter what.

Hummingbird75 · 04/07/2024 09:44

Thoughtful2355 · 04/07/2024 09:42

We're all voting green. I won't be the reason our country won't change.

What do you think Greens will do to improve the quality of your life given they only recognise the men and boys in your family?

Thoughtful2355 · 04/07/2024 09:44

Also remember, even if he party you vote for doesn't win this year. Your vote counts. The stats count year on year

Not at all - interested in all views. I am absolutely a feminist and fairly well-read on women’s healthcare issues and how these have historically (and currently) been overlooked (even down to the different symptoms of heart attack not previously being recognised etc), but I didn’t realise the Tories had a specific plan to deal with this - is that the case? FWIW, I don’t feel I currently align with any party but the Tories have made such a shambles of things I think they have to go.

BlowDryRat · 04/07/2024 09:45

I voted Labour for the first time ever this morning. I swore I wouldn't after Iraq, but that was 20 years ago. We need a change of government and Reform etc. are far worse. My local Labour MP is GC so I didn't feel so bad voting for her. I just hope a Labour government doesn't take it as a mandate to trample women's rights into the dust.
