Voting labour for the first time. Anyone else?

Labour are far from perfect, but I like Keir Starmer and I think they are the best party to turn things around from the awful mess the incumbents have got us into.

He’s not glossy or witty or funny, but he seems decent - (he clearly has a wonderful wife and that only reflects well on him!)

Anyway, just curious - anyone else voting Labour for the first time? I’m 40 by the way and in the south east.

We need economic growth, under the Tories, that has stagnated, we are so behind. The worst economic growth for nearly 100 years. They've had their chance. I am voting Labour. I don't agree on all policies but more than others.

Economic growth is not going to happen if you tax the small amount of people earning a high salary even more (who are already taxed to the hilt and get nothing in return). They will just change their behaviours and the tax take will drop, that is basic human psychology. Nobody is going to work more hours for a pay cut as well as being lectured that they are privileged for working hard and should be punished for doing so, so that those that don't work/work less can have more of their already over taxed money.

And all the super-rich will either leave or will find sophisticated ways to avoid any taxes so the tax take will rely solely on the diminishing middle classes who will decide there is no point in trying to do better, will either emigrate or take lower paid jobs with benefit top-ups and work less.

All the upset Tories on here is very entertaining. I expect carnage tonight when the exit poll hits.

I have my champagne and popcorn ready 😂

Can't wait!!! 😁

listsandbudgets · 04/07/2024 09:19

Also I want a ceasefire in Gaza and Starmer wants a "humanitarian pause" .. in other words feed them, tend their wounds and THEN kill them.

I want my dd to have female only spaces

I want my DS not to be indoctrinated with left wing twaddle in schools where everyone is pulled dow. To the level of the least academic.. and yes it happens.

I want investors to have an incentive to invest in the UK

I want my mum not to pay extra tax on her pension ..

I fully accept it will be a resounding victory for Labour tonight but whether it will be a victory for your families and your future remai s to be seen

We now have 30 hours a week of free childcare which is more than we have ever had before.

It's not free though, it's been badly funded by the current government to the extent that nurseries are closing down because they can no longer afford to run.

Anyway I am voting tactically for Lib Dem to hopefully oust our Tory MP.

It is massive help for so many of my friends to have 30 hours a week - so I don't agree and feel people just do not understand how we can't function at all, unless we are recognised as women!

Floorbard · 04/07/2024 09:20

Nope, they’re Tory lite at this point. I’m just fascinated that someone actually likes Kier Starmer!

VelvetBow · 04/07/2024 09:20

Nope. Labour have been running Wales for a long long time and it's progressively getting more shit.

I'll be voting Lib Dem.

And this is why I won't vote Labour

As I said upthread it’s a parody of Neil Kinnock in 1992. “I warn you not to be young under the Tories, I warn you not to get ill, I warn you not to get old”. It won’t work today because people know Kinnock was right.

aren't you embarrassed to be calling the election before people have even voted. It seems somewhat presumptuous to me.

errjql · 04/07/2024 09:22

No way. I’d rather be beaten than vote labour.

Their spending plans are going to be funded by undisclosed means or debt.

Does it really make a difference though? Our nursery, plus all the others in the borough, just increased fees so even with our 15 free hours we’re still paying the exact same monthly bill. Maybe unique to my area though?

Maybe the saying now would be:

'I warn you not to be a woman under Labour, I warn you not to work for a living under any circumstances as your money is no longer your own, I warn you life will never be the same again under socialism'

Because you read and believe the daily mail? You should probably get that looked at

Not read it in avout 10 years.. you should get yourself looked looked at.. jumping to assumptions without any thought is a dangerous trait.. do you read The Sun?

Fightthepower · 04/07/2024 09:23

I’m voting Lim Dem and hoping our long held Tory seat falls (SE true blue area & Labour will not win here) but very much hoping to wake up to a Labour victory ✌️

It might be her last bottle, everything else that moves going forward will be taxed including the bubbles in champagne!! 😂

tennesseewhiskey1 · 04/07/2024 09:24

No.

LizzieSiddal · 04/07/2024 09:25

I’ve always voted Lib Dem but will be voting Labour for the first time. I do have reservations re Women's Rights but have decided to put my trust in Labour. The last 14 years have been an utter disaster for the UK and for trust in politicians. I hope Labour don’t disappoint.

Enjoy your celebration, truly. But those of us who are not voting Labour can see what’s about to happen. Our disappointment tomorrow will be nothing compared to the disappointment people will feel in 5 years time when little has changed. A short Labour term will just cement another long Tory government in future, where they will win on the bases of ‘told you so’. And the cycle continues…

Type2whattodo · 04/07/2024 06:53

Voting Tory for the first time ever, for Women's rights. Am quite terrified what Labour will do to Women and I have 2x DD.
I fully expect labour to win and sadly expect to have womens rights stripped away quite quickly after, until they wake up and start panicking and it'll be too late.

Labour are going to allow all sorts of fetishism in men to ID into women and I fear for my DD future. Lucky I hold citizenship to another country also and can leave if need be.

This is a genuine question and I’m interested in your response - do you not think your DDs’ lives will be far more impacted overall by things like a functional healthcare and education system? If the issue is trans women entering women’s toilets and changing rooms, I am honestly struggling to think of a time I’ve noticed this - and under the Equality Act, whatever people’s views on this, trans people do in fact already have the right to do that. On the other hand, I have been personally affected by an incompetent NHS and the cost of living and other issues, which IMO are far more impactful on daily life. I’m not sure what age your DDs are, but are they/are you bringing them up to be LGBT+ allies?

Inlaw · 04/07/2024 09:27

Well that was what I was going to do begrudgingly. We need to get the tories out.

But then last night I saw David Lammy post. Which has just been deleted. Was that true what he said on radio 5?

We can’t have that man in a prime cabinet position. Absolutely outrageous behaviour and this is supposed to be him on his best behaviour. That’s terrifying!

KimberleyClark · 04/07/2024 09:27

VelvetBow · 04/07/2024 09:20

The Labour government in Wales has its hands tied because they’re dependent upon Westminster for their funding. For demographic and geographic reasons it costs more to deliver public services in Wales than England. The Welsh government needs more powers and a better funding formula - Barnett is useless. Plus a lot of Welsh people cut their noses off their faces by voting for Brexit and the Westminster government haven’t come close to making up for the lost funds from that.

MaGueule · 04/07/2024 09:27

Didimum · 04/07/2024 06:43

Yes, me. Have always voted Lib Dem.

Same here. But there’s a chance Labour might take the seat away from our current dreadful Conservative MP and I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to lend them a hand.

I am still very much keeping my fingers crossed for our neighbouring constituency, which might well go to the Lib Dems.

listsandbudgets · 04/07/2024 09:28
