To think It's not THAT odd to order a baked potato instead of chips, with a burger?

Went for a pub lunch with my friend on Sunday.
Ordered a burger and asked for baked potato instead of chips.
I just don't favour the chips in this particular pub, and it saves fat/calories.

When my lunch arrived my friend was aghast (not exaggerating) kept repeatedly telling me how odd it was, that 'burgers go with chips that's that!' and 'You can order a baked potato on the menu anyway, so that's like you've got TWO meals!'
I see the point there but, a baked potato has fewer calories than a portion of chips, so doesn't that sort of negate that point at least?

I had the same comment a few years ago on a work do too-although they just made one comment rather than repeated ones.

There's a pub near me that offers any side with a burger, including baked potatoes, whereas most places I have to ask for a swap.

I kind of proved my friends' point in this pub on Sunday though, because the burger came with guacamole and roast veg on it, and I couldn't fit it into my mouth so I used them as a topping for the potato so I suppose that DID make it into two meals in the end!

Nah, I wouldn’t blink at that, but I do know an American that thinks it’s weird to have an omelette for lunch, as that’s strictly breakfast food 🤷‍♀️

I guess it's just a bit surprising because it's an unusual combo and most people would have probably just ordered something other than a burger if calorie-watching. It's not a particularly healthy food!

But yeah, your friend shouldn't have been so judgemental. It's a bit weird but not a big deal. And it's really off putting when someone repeatedly makes comments about what you are eating.

My parents did this to me once when I had pancakes with bacon and maple syrup, they said about 5 times how awful it was and they would never eat it, to the point I was just like "OK. Can we move on now please?!" and it kind of spoiled the meal.

It is very annoying isn't it?! Just shut up and let me eat my bloody lunch-talk about something else! I can't think of the right word for it but just, why? It's not that interesting a subject, and why does it matter what YOU think of what I want to eat? I am not forcing you to eat it!

yes, it’s weird. But it’s just a potato side. You’re not eating “more” than if you’d had chips.

For me personally, eating a dry jacket potato is grim, I’d need butter at the very least, if not mayo, coleslaw etc. So it’s really no healthier to opt for a jacket.

All the posters saying it's weird, please inform the food establishments who think it's OK to offer it to coeliacs! It's quite common for chips to be fried with gluten containing foods and so you get offered a gluten free burger with a jacket potato.

You have reminded me that they do a vegan burger at a pub near me, and I know that they remind anyone ordering it that the chips are cooked in the same fat as meat products, and do they want a jacket potato instead.

I don't find this odd at all. When I lived in Canada, a lot of restaurants offer a choice of fries, salad or soup with a burger. I regularly had soup with my burger because... Why the hell not! You are the one eating it at the end of the day, I wouldn't care what anyone else ordered. You don't need to justify your choices. There is a chain of pubs near me where I live now that offers fries, jacket potato or salad as a side to a burger, so clearly that chain thinks it's acceptable to have a jacket potato

Previousreligion · 02/07/2024 15:26

I don't think it's weird at all. If I make burgers at home I'll often do it with a small jacket potato and salad.

MiddleAgedKirin · 02/07/2024 15:28

That sounds very, very weird, OP but not in a way I can justify. Just like chip butties make no sense to me but a common snack where I grew up is yakisoba pan (fried noodies in a hot dog bun) now that blows my English DH's mind 😆

Conniebygaslight · 02/07/2024 15:29

I'd personally eat a jacket potato with anything as long as it was drenched in butter, which would probably defeat the object. I probably wouldn't have the burger bun with it though, but each to their own and I REALLY hate it when other people make a song & dance about people's food choices. It's bloody rude.

Abitlosttoday · 02/07/2024 15:31

Breathmiller · 02/07/2024 13:03

This reminds me of my mum amd step dad who used to have a baked potato as a side dish to a pizza !!

To be honest, neither her pizza or your burger should be odd, its just potato after all. But its not for me. But enjoy

That's outrageous! A potato with a pizza? I think pizza and chips is weird too.

Wouldn't comment or care though, on any of these combinations. It's rude.

Flatulence · 02/07/2024 15:32

If that's what you wanted then fine. It's quite an unusual combo though (most people would probably just ask for salad or nothing at all if they didn't want the chips). I've never seen anyone have a burger with a jacket potato as a side, but you do you!

PoppyCherryDog · 02/07/2024 15:33

I’d think it odd. But doesn’t really matter what others think as long as you like the food.

ASimpleLampoon · 02/07/2024 15:35

I did exactly this with my autistic child and his anxiety is now much improved and attendance almost 100 %.

HarpieDuJour · 02/07/2024 15:36

Where I work, we have a customer who regularly orders a sausage and marmalade roll. That's odd! A jacket potato with a burger is maybe not a common choice, but it's not like you asked for custard on your burger!

However, repeatedly commenting on someone else's food choices is both rude and strange.

crispyeggs · 02/07/2024 15:37

I really don't think this is weird? It's way healthier plus it's just potato. At BBQs I often have a burger and a jacket potato. People are nuts getting their knickers in a twist about this

The current phrase to respond to this is 'don't yuck my yum', which I agree with as a concept but think I hate as a collection of words.

Dotjones · 02/07/2024 15:40

Yes a jacket potato with a burger is weird in Britain at least. If you go to America it might be more acceptable, I had a burger with macaroni cheese instead of chips the last time I was there. Different country, different rules.

StoneColdAlibi · 02/07/2024 15:41

Tinylittleunicorn · 02/07/2024 14:23

It's unusual but not suspicious

😂

Whowahway123 · 02/07/2024 15:50

Oooh I must fall into the weird category!!

i live in the land of the
spud - Ireland and it’s definitely a standard side. In cafe type places it can be a lunch meal sometimes.

Do you never do baked potatoes with BBQs ie hot dog, burger, steak, chop AND and baked potato can all be seen on the ONE plate here!!

User364837 · 02/07/2024 15:51

It’s unusual but crack on

I do find that happens a lot in other situations in my life. I put on a bit of weight last year and worked hard to lose it. My friend had also put on weight and was constantly trying to encourage me to eat more, even if we weren't together but I mentioned that I was counting the calories/choosing healthier options etc.

Well done on your weight loss! :)

I got some good advice from someone who said not to mention to people why you are making the choices that you are. Just make them, and if they say anything, just say that's what I'd really enjoy eating/fancy. When I started doing it, I found it doesn't always work, but it's harder for someone to say that you are deprived or whatever if you say it's what you want to eat. If they want to say it's weird, then just smile and say that you are cool being weird. Takes the resistance out of it ...

Conniecoconut · 02/07/2024 15:51

I've had a burger and a potato as a side, it's common on gluten free menus (chips are often coated or fried in same oil as other foods) so doesn't seem weird at all. Your friend mentioning more than once, is a bit weird though.

Whatwhat123 · 02/07/2024 15:52

Haha it is a bit unusual but not that much of a big deal. I'd say as well it depends on the size of the jacket, surely there's a similar amount of calories if you add butter?

PToosher · 02/07/2024 15:55

I hate jacket potatoes, and I mean HATE them.
Back in the 80s on a Friday night in the winter my mum would dish up burger and jacket potato for dinner, I assume as some sort of nod to a Bonfire Night 'treat'. Beefburger was tiny on a jumbo bap with a massive jacket potato beside it. I'd sit there for about an hour trying to grind my way through it.
To this day even the smell of jacket potatoes turns me over.

willWillSmithsmith · 02/07/2024 15:55

Bjorkdidit · 02/07/2024 13:29

I don't fancy that either. I don't think beans or coleslaw go with baked potatoes either.

Cottage cheese (Longley Farm full fat), grated cheese, butter and loads of salt and pepper for me. Or maybe tuna mayonnaise.

I don’t like baked beans but they’re perfect with jacket potatoes (with grated cheese on top).

I love sour cream on them, but I could eat sour cream out the pot.
I would say steak and jacket potato seem like a good combination. I suppose it’s the bun and potato (of any type) that would seem too much for me.

StoneColdAlibi · 02/07/2024 16:02

How about next time cutting the baked potato in half and using them as the bun? That would really fuck with her.
