To think It's not THAT odd to order a baked potato instead of chips, with a burger?

Went for a pub lunch with my friend on Sunday.
Ordered a burger and asked for baked potato instead of chips.
I just don't favour the chips in this particular pub, and it saves fat/calories.

When my lunch arrived my friend was aghast (not exaggerating) kept repeatedly telling me how odd it was, that 'burgers go with chips that's that!' and 'You can order a baked potato on the menu anyway, so that's like you've got TWO meals!'
I see the point there but, a baked potato has fewer calories than a portion of chips, so doesn't that sort of negate that point at least?

I had the same comment a few years ago on a work do too-although they just made one comment rather than repeated ones.

There's a pub near me that offers any side with a burger, including baked potatoes, whereas most places I have to ask for a swap.

I kind of proved my friends' point in this pub on Sunday though, because the burger came with guacamole and roast veg on it, and I couldn't fit it into my mouth so I used them as a topping for the potato so I suppose that DID make it into two meals in the end!

I love a baked potato. I’ve seen this offered in American style diners/ burger places. Choose between French fries, thick cut chips, baked potato or a salad. Baked potato is a normal side imo I also serve a baked potato as a side with steak!

A jacket potato is a meal. Imagine having a meal with a meal. This is wrong.

I would look to therapy.

Blimey, barely a week into the year and the award for 2025's Most Trivial AIBU appears to be already in the bag.

I'd look into therapy if my thinking was as illogical as yours.

A potato is not a meal. A potato with a substantial topping like chilli, beans and cheese or tuna mayonnaise is a meal, but a potato on it's own is a side whether it is baked and served whole or cut up into chips and fried.

I am afraid it would be void, given I posted this in July last year. The award for the most trivial reason to bring up a zombie thread may have eligibility though! Wink

Although I can see why one wouldn't want a mashed potato sandwich

You've clearly never had a vada pav, the Indian answer to a burger and one of my favourite ever food items.

I don't eat baked potatoes cooked by anyone except me because far too many pubs etc sell pre-made ones, which are usually disgusting, but if you want a baked potato with your burger, that's absolutely your choice. Plus I disagree with your friend that a potato in whole form with a burger is two meals, but if you cut that same potato into chips and fry them, that's just a side.

Edited

You've just reminded me of dashing around some town in Kerala in a tuktuk at night looking for somewhere DH remembered as doing the best vada pav ever. It was wild.

I hope you won! I'd love to have heard your acceptance speech. And, indeed, to have attended the after-party at Spud-U-Like.

(God, that dates me.)

Couldn't resist!

I have indeed ordered the same (albeit in a different place)since-I stand by its superiority in terms of health, flavour and to satiate!

Spectacularly missed my point! 😄

This thread reminds me of that joke that Joan Rivers used to tell about Liz Taylor. I am going to reproduce it here. Please don't take offence as I am just reporting what Joan used to say.

Joan: What does Liz Taylor have on her hotdog?
Answer: A hamburger!

I used to think this was a funny joke. Interesting how humour changes over time.

And I suppose some people on here are asking who the hell is Liz Taylor?

I really miss Spud-U-Like. It was my healthy(ish) takeaway of choice.

Yep odd, but each to their own!

I know who Liz Taylor is, but I don't understand that joke, please explain sorry if I am just being thick?

So, Liz Taylor put on a lot of weight and Joan was making a joke about her eating habits. When you're asked what you want on your hotdog people usually say Ketchup or onions. Liz wants a whole hamburger. I didn't tell it right - which is why you didn't get it.

Also, the joke is very old. Perhaps these days it is seen as perfectly reasonable to have a hamburger on your hotdog.

Galdownunder · 10/01/2025 22:26

Far too many carbs for me but you do you (I’m on a diet).

KnightsTemplar00 · 10/01/2025 22:30

its different but then im a fan of eat what you prefer

@PointsSouth "Blimey, barely a week into the year and the award for 2025's Most Trivial AIBU appears to be already in the bag"

Actually, I think reviving a 6 month old thread to say "oh, I couldn't possibly eat all that!" is pure, classic Mumsnet!

CurlewKate · 11/01/2025 04:52

And if I wasn't going to have chips with a burger, I'd have a huge salad......

CouldItBeAnyMoreObvious · 11/01/2025 07:23

Why people double carb meals is beyond me. If you have a burger in a bun, you have carbs. No need for a potato-based side.
No Italian would eat lasagne and chips/garlic bread, no European feels the need to throw spuds at everything

I'm ticking off my Mumsnet bingo card.....

Bjorkdidit · 11/01/2025 08:46

You've clearly never been to Germany, who are huge fans of the potato. Probably other countries too.

Does Chips with a curry and rice count?
Curry, rice , naan AND chips?

When did Ireland leave Europe?

CurlewKate · 11/01/2025 19:27

The French are partial to a potato.
