To think It's not THAT odd to order a baked potato instead of chips, with a burger?

Marygoround22 · 02/07/2024 12:55

Went for a pub lunch with my friend on Sunday.
Ordered a burger and asked for baked potato instead of chips.
I just don't favour the chips in this particular pub, and it saves fat/calories.

When my lunch arrived my friend was aghast (not exaggerating) kept repeatedly telling me how odd it was, that 'burgers go with chips that's that!' and 'You can order a baked potato on the menu anyway, so that's like you've got TWO meals!'
I see the point there but, a baked potato has fewer calories than a portion of chips, so doesn't that sort of negate that point at least?

I had the same comment a few years ago on a work do too-although they just made one comment rather than repeated ones.

There's a pub near me that offers any side with a burger, including baked potatoes, whereas most places I have to ask for a swap.

I kind of proved my friends' point in this pub on Sunday though, because the burger came with guacamole and roast veg on it, and I couldn't fit it into my mouth so I used them as a topping for the potato so I suppose that DID make it into two meals in the end!

YANBU to like it
You YABU to think that it isn't odd/unusual.

New combo for me!

TheUnknownsMum · 02/07/2024 14:47

Okay it was kind of weird to start with, but now you’re saying it had no topping? Nothing? That is beyond.

CalmaLlamaDown · 02/07/2024 14:50

Marygoround22 · 02/07/2024 13:23

Grin they called it a 'Festival Burger'!

To be fair, gross as it may be, I scraped the guac and veg from the burger (well, some of it, most of it had already fallen out!) and used that on the potato as a topping which was quite nice. So I can deal with that.

Wetherspoons do a Fiesta Burger with guacamole and roasted red peppers. I didn’t like it (or the chips), although it was a beyond burger, not beef.

YABU - jacket potato and burger is an odd combo. But your friend was also unreasonable to be going on and on about it.

Roast potatoes aren’t a main meal

Reported.

One of the only things I could eat when pregnant with my son was a plate of roast potatoes covered in dominos’ vegan garlic mayo, it was great !

CactusMactus · 02/07/2024 14:51

I feel like we are not seeing the real issue here...

"burger came with guacamole and roast veg on it" WTF?

Marygoround22 · 02/07/2024 14:53

Mrsjayy · 02/07/2024 13:26

Oh I don't think I'd be able to eat that texturely it be too weird for me my brain would see it as 2 different meals. I wouldn't go on about it though but it is weird. 😀

I am beginning to see that now-as a burger and chips you could eat with your hands? But a burger you pick up-and then you need a fork for your potato?

😂😂😂😂😂😂

Fair point. Roast potatoes are the principal reason for a roast dinner, but other things are apparently required.

maw1681 · 02/07/2024 14:54

Sorry but it is a bit weird! You can eat what you want though it's nobody else's business. (I would have probably asked for extra salad or just the burger on its own)

Marygoround22 · 02/07/2024 14:54

amusedbush · 02/07/2024 13:21

I don't know. I can't even put it into words but it just feels wrong!

Even the thought makes me queasy. My brother agreed with me at the time, so I feel validated in my ridiculousness 😅

I would say that's wrong, too although I'd never comment on it or think much of it. Is it that egg and potato doesn't go together? It isn't the cold aspect of it as I'd think coleslaw was fine? I have confused my brain now.

crostini · 02/07/2024 14:56

Yeah it's a odd choice but whatever. I would let you crack on.

But a jacket needs a filling/topping or at least butter and cheddar. You surely can't just eat a potato dry? So you'd be negating the save in calories the moment you put anything on it.
Yes to me it's two separate meals. But then I think a burger and salad is enough and doesn't really need chips. 9/10 chips are not cooked how I want and are just a waste of time.

CarolinaInTheMorning · 02/07/2024 14:57

DappledThings · 02/07/2024 12:57

Nah, that's weird! But in the UK a jacket potato is considered a meal by itself. In the US it's a side dish. So less weird there.

I often have a baked potato with a hamburger, but I'm American. A baked potato is definitely not considered a meal here in the US. But when I do this, I usually order the burger without the bun to save on the carbs (and calories).

Missgucci · 02/07/2024 14:57

Funderthighs · 02/07/2024 12:59

It’s an odd choice but it doesn’t offend me.

Its not an odd choice. It's no different to having wedges.. it's just a baked potato not a side of custard 🙄

Fgfgfg · 02/07/2024 14:57

@Marygoround22 Although I can see why one wouldn't want a mashed potato sandwich, or to put a baked potato in one although chip sandwiches are widely acceptable.

I'm shocked. You have never had a mashed potato butty! Why not? They're wonderful and very common up north where we do like our carbs with added carbs. Try one. With brown sauce. It'll be a revelation.

MysticCT · 02/07/2024 14:59

I always change chips to a jacket potato as a side, I'm not overly keen on chips and love jacket potatoes.
I think I might be quite unusual though as I prefer mashed potatoes to roast ones.

RainbowZebraWarrior · 02/07/2024 12:58

I can honestly say that in all my 53 years, I've never seen burger and jacket potato on the same plate anywhere.

you need to come to my house. DH and i sometimes have a burger with a baked potato and coleslaw

Moveoverdarlin · 02/07/2024 15:05

Love jacket potatos and would order one over chips, HOWEVER not with a burger. Burger needs chips.

LSTMS30555 · 02/07/2024 15:06

AngelDelightButNotStrawberry · 02/07/2024 13:05

I used to have some friends who had baked potato as a side to lasagne. Which I thought was weird.

Oh that sounds nice 👌🏼
I like putting heinz spaghetti bolognaise on my jacket potatoes; I'm in Turkey 🇹🇷 at the moment not enjoying the food at all 😩
When I'm back home I'm gonna try that 😋

FirconeTheCat · 02/07/2024 15:10

AInamechange · 02/07/2024 13:06

I've done it before

2 points on the thing about a Jacket being it's own meal:

1 They generally do smaller ones for sides rather than it's own thing (obvs don't know if that's the case in this particular pub
2 As a side you just have it with butter, as a meal you'd have it loaded with something else!

I think this is what it’s all about, a side or a meal in its own right.

LakeTiticaca · 02/07/2024 15:10

Can't see a problem here. I do like chips with a burger but a jacket spud will be quite acceptable 😋 😏

Needamagicfairy · 02/07/2024 15:12

I'd think it was a bit unusual but I have enough manners not to comment on others choice of food so wouldn't say anything

Koko83 · 02/07/2024 15:13

Pizzaland used to serve a dish that was pizza and a baked potato that my sister used to get.

LlynTegid · 02/07/2024 15:14

Unusual does not mean weird in my opinion.

Marygoround22 · 02/07/2024 15:15

Funnywonder · 02/07/2024 13:58

It's unusual. But there's nothing wrong with it. People should mind their own business about what other people eat. I love spuds in any form, but chips/fries would usually be last on my list of preferences, so I can definitely see myself preferring a baked potato. I would eat a plate of just boiled potatoes with a bit of salt as a dinner, if I didn't feel stupidly guilty for not having a bit of variety😆 Or champ. A big bucket of champ. I'm bloody starving now!

Go on, you have to tell me what 'champ' is (assuming it isn't short for champagne, I could get on board with that if it is)!

Fries are the more conventional option but a baked potato is perfectly fine. Tbh if you wanted spaghetti or ice cream on the side that would be fine too as it's what you want. I wouldn't have thought a baked potato would generate more than a raised eyebrow ...

Sometimes friends can be judgmental when you pick a healthier option. One friend used to constantly do this to me saying "you've got to live" when I did that. Special meals kind of became a battle ground. Eventually, I pulled her up on it and she admitted it was because she felt me having the healthier option was showing up her less healthy choice. I don't know if that could be the case with your friend?

Enjoy whatever side you like. It's by experimenting with food that new dishes and recipes are created. See yourself as a burger and baked potato pioneer! You never know, you might be starting the next trend. :)

I do find that happens a lot in other situations in my life. I put on a bit of weight last year and worked hard to lose it. My friend had also put on weight and was constantly trying to encourage me to eat more, even if we weren't together but I mentioned that I was counting the calories/choosing healthier options etc.

I grew up in SA. We have baked potatoes, and they are absolutely a popular side dish. In fact jacket potatoes, as a main meal, has taken me quite a long time to get my head around.

I personally would not swap chips for a jacket/baked potato with a burger, but I don't think it's that weird. At home I would regularly swap chips for a baked potato with a steak though. My favourite. Very American actually I think. Here, if available, I have to swap to new potatoes.
