To think It's not THAT odd to order a baked potato instead of chips, with a burger?

Marygoround22 · 02/07/2024 12:55

Went for a pub lunch with my friend on Sunday.
Ordered a burger and asked for baked potato instead of chips.
I just don't favour the chips in this particular pub, and it saves fat/calories.

When my lunch arrived my friend was aghast (not exaggerating) kept repeatedly telling me how odd it was, that 'burgers go with chips that's that!' and 'You can order a baked potato on the menu anyway, so that's like you've got TWO meals!'
I see the point there but, a baked potato has fewer calories than a portion of chips, so doesn't that sort of negate that point at least?

I had the same comment a few years ago on a work do too-although they just made one comment rather than repeated ones.

There's a pub near me that offers any side with a burger, including baked potatoes, whereas most places I have to ask for a swap.

I kind of proved my friends' point in this pub on Sunday though, because the burger came with guacamole and roast veg on it, and I couldn't fit it into my mouth so I used them as a topping for the potato so I suppose that DID make it into two meals in the end!

That sounds very, very weird, OP but not in a way I can justify. Just like chip butties make no sense to me but a common snack where I grew up is yakisoba pan (fried noodies in a hot dog bun) now that blows my English DH's mind 😆

Chip butties make perfect sense. Hot chips melting the butter, neatly packaged in bread, it’s heavenly.

I put ramen noodles in a bun or heaped on buttered bread, that’s also heavenly. 🙂

MysticCT · 02/07/2024 14:59

I always change chips to a jacket potato as a side, I'm not overly keen on chips and love jacket potatoes.
I think I might be quite unusual though as I prefer mashed potatoes to roast ones.

Oh so do I. Mashed potato and gravy is one of my favourite things to eat, nothing else just that.

Miyagi99 · 02/07/2024 16:16

It’s just a different way of serving potato surely? Can’t say I would bat an eyelid.

Februaryfeels · 02/07/2024 16:24

I think I've read most of the replies so a massive thank you to everyone for NOT writing "Jkt pots"

🤣

Reallyquitejaded · 02/07/2024 16:27

I’m surprised at the fuss here! It’s still a potato. You have made a healthier choice which matches what you would prefer. If the world is so used to seeing and ordering fast food you’re seen as odd for having a healthier option - that is the scary part in your post.

buttnut · 02/07/2024 16:27

I would think it was a bit unusual (but harmless) and I wouldn’t go on about it out loud, I hate it when people comment on what others are eating

SpongeBob2022 · 02/07/2024 16:28

Restaurants often allow you to swap fries for a jacket to be healthier so I don't think that in itself is weird. I wouldn't bat an eyelid if someone did it with steak, for example.

Maybe its the double carb thing (with the bun) that makes it feel slightly odd. Although chips are also carbs, obviously!

I agree with a pp maybe it's also something to do with eating a burger with your hands and then potato with a knife and fork.

Whatever....I wouldn't judge you!

I might have a jacket potato with toppings as a lunch but it's not a main meal for me. To be part of a main meal I'd have it with some meat and veg (as an alternative to mash, roasts) etc. A potato is a potato.

ETA: I'm actually genuinely curious now. Are there people out there that only have jacket potatoes as a meal in themselves and never as the potato option of a standard dinner?!

Shantayyoustaysashayaway · 02/07/2024 16:34

Marygoround22 · 02/07/2024 13:09

I didn't have anything on it! I wouldn't order a baked potato with topping AND a burger. It was just a side baked potato. Some pubs/restaurants offer a choice of chips/baked potato/mash do they not? And they're on a lot of menu's side orders.

If I am weird I am weird. I don't usually mind eating junk food or calorific foods if I am out for a meal but the difference with chips and jacket potatoes is a LOT so if I don't particularly fancy chips I do this. I don't really like fried food generally speaking so to me it makes sense, but if I am weird I am weird Smile

My friend honestly must've made at least five comments sounding very shocked. If I was ever surprised at something someone had ordered to eat I don't think I'd comment at all, or if I was it would be 'ooh that's different' and then that's that-I am sure there are more interesting things to talk about!

And yes, both potatoes! Although I can see why one wouldn't want a mashed potato sandwich, or to put a baked potato in one although chip sandwiches are widely acceptable.

Op, do you at least have butter on your jp? I couldn't eat one without but my dgd (16) never has butter on hers.
As for mashed potato sandwiches, my dh loves them. When I do mash I always do extra to put in a bowl to go in, the fridge ready for him for the next day.!

Emmerald · 02/07/2024 16:35

I've been out with friends who have ordered baked potato, chips and garlic bread. Triple carbs. Suppose it goes well with the lager! 😂

TheChippendenSpook · 02/07/2024 16:38

Bloom15 · 02/07/2024 13:35

You. Are. A. Monster

😂

🤣 they're amazing! Especially if you use Kerry Gold or Country life butter on the bread!

thefamous5 · 02/07/2024 16:38

It's not a combination I would personally choose but I wouldn't bat an eyelid at someone else's choice.

Like you said, it's just potato in another form. I'm personally a little 😧 at eating it without at least butter, but if I was eating with someone and they chose that, cool. I'd be too busy shoving the chips into my gob to notice

Marygoround22 · 02/07/2024 16:43

Parrotcoop · 02/07/2024 14:26

Is it actually fewer calories, by the time you've put butter or whatever on it? I don't know the answer, but it often seems to me that the healthy/low calorie options aren't much different.

a quick google (and I know there are a lot of variables) tells me a medium potato is 161 cals (I find that a bit hard to believe, I think more like 230) and a portion of chips is 608.

Even with the calories from the butter, you're still ingesting a LOT of saturated fat and all the other things that come from fried food, with the chips, too.

I don’t think this weird at all. I’m quite surprised at the amount of people who do.

Im not a big fan of chips as they are terribly unhealthy and a baked potato is much better choice. Most peoples diets are complete garbage though so I generally don’t listen to people who comment on my food. It’s strange that your friend went on and about it, are they very unhealthy? Sometimes people like that don’t understand why people make different choices with food

my friend is quite unhealthy, to be fair. Just isn't something she ever thinks about. If I am eating out, either nice food, or cheap and cheerful like today, that's my one treat of the week and I am very careful with health the rest of the time. She just eats whatever, whenever and seldom even considers her health. And yes, chips can be so tasty but they're VERY bad for you!

I feel like we are not seeing the real issue here...

"burger came with guacamole and roast veg on it" WTF?

Is that especially bad? 😂Wetherspoons do something similar according to a PP?!

Yes it is VERY odd.

HTH.

Minikievs · 02/07/2024 17:02

Breathmiller · 02/07/2024 13:03

This reminds me of my mum amd step dad who used to have a baked potato as a side dish to a pizza !!

To be honest, neither her pizza or your burger should be odd, its just potato after all. But its not for me. But enjoy

My mum and dad do this too!!
And have garlic bread with it.
They had a San Marco pizza as well, so a proper BREADY pizza. Carb overload.

I realise it isn't the healthiest option to have a burger, chips or no chips! But chips have a lot of fat-I still think overall, it is much healthier to have a baked potato and a burger, than it is to have a burger and chips-obviously if you smother said potato in cheese or butter then that negates it somewhat!

@Fgfgfg I am in Yorkshire! Am I letting the side down?

@MysticCT I am not keen on roast potatoes either runs to hide

@StoneColdAlibi I agree-good sentiment but what an awful sentence!

@StoneColdAlibi haha I thnk that might be carb overload if in the same mouthful! I am thinking that next time I might leave out the bun though. All they do is go soggy!

I need to know the logistics of making a mashed potato sandwich now.

And no, I never use butter. I will salt and pepper a potato, sometimes olive oil if the table has any. On Sunday though it was handy to have guacamole and roast veg for it. Flavoured with the burger that was rather nice.

Lasagne and chips is another double carb, isn't' it? Triple with garlic bread which seems quite common.

@thefamous5 us 'd be too busy shoving the chips into my gob to notice😂

It used to be normal to have baked potatoes cooked in the coals when having a bbq, and so people would eat baked potatoes with hotdogs and burgers.

MrsMonzo · 02/07/2024 17:28

It is a bit odd, but I wouldn't be mad at it!

Burger - gooooood
Jacket potato - gooooood

I wouldn't make any particular comment or fuss over it, it's all potato at the end of the day!

VeryHappyBunny · 02/07/2024 17:47

Don't worry about weird food combos till you've been in a care home for a while. They have just brought me a jacket potato with a few bits of vegan cheese on and a small salad. So far so good you might think - WRONG. The skin was black/incinerated and the flesh was a brownish grey and inedible, it looked like it had been in a bin for a few days. The salad was lettuce, tomato, cucumber and raw red onion. All raw onion gives me a sick headache and in the 18 months I have been here I have told them every single time NOT to give me any raw onion. I love cooked onions but have never had a boiled onion in all this time. It took the best part of 10 minutes to remove all the onion from the salad. Lunch was fusilli with some boiled mixed veg and no sauce, very underwhelming.

A properly cooked jacket potato with just a burger, sans bun plus salad or veg would be fine. The chips here are usually cold and always soggy. I have had curry with rice AND chips! Some food isn't even identifiable either for what it is or even as food. Piss poor would be an accurate description. One day last week I had some mash and peas for lunch and for tea a sandwich (singular).

At least I am leaving next week and then I can get my own food. Crispy chips, edible jacket potatoes (crunchy on the outside and fluffy - and white - inside). Sandwich fillings of choice include: mature cheese and golden syrup, crisps and salad cream and sometimes soft brown sugar on quality granary.

It doesn't matter if people think your choices are weird, they are your choices and you're not forcing them on to anyone else. Its a bad state of affairs if you can't eat what you want without rude comments.

BebbanburgIsMine · 02/07/2024 18:18

@crostini

I eat dry baked tatties! With just a wee bit of salt, I don't like cheese, tuna or baked beans ir any other filling, only thing that goes with tatties (baby or roast) is gravy!

It's not weird to me, doesn't affect anyone else, why ruin a perfectly nice food with butter or fillings.

Funnywonder · 02/07/2024 18:47

Marygoround22 · 02/07/2024 15:15

Go on, you have to tell me what 'champ' is (assuming it isn't short for champagne, I could get on board with that if it is)!

Oh you haven’t lived until you eat champ😀It’s popular here in NI. It’s basically just mash with spring onions (scallions). You just boil your spuds in the usual way, heat some milk in a saucepan with chopped scallions. I usually add the butter to the mix as well, rather than adding it separately to the potatoes. Then just mash the mixture into the spuds. Bit of salt (pepper if you’re very exotic) and that’s it. Some people use cream as well as milk for a heart attack special - even more delicious though.

I fancy the thought of champagne though, to be fair.

MartinsSpareCalculator · 02/07/2024 18:49

I don't like chips so I'd choose pretty much any other form of potato over them. I think a jacket potato with food you eat with your hands is a bit odd but I also think people should eat whatever they want and others should have enough manners not to comment on it.

CarolinaInTheMorning · 02/07/2024 19:14

I agree with a pp maybe it's also something to do with eating a burger with your hands and then potato with a knife and fork.

Why would it be this? Quite a few side dishes that go with burgers require a fork. Cole slaw comes to mind as well as baked beans.
