To think there's going to be a Civil War in America

I mean, they're fucked aren't they

Now that Trump isn't getting prosecuted after today for the January 6th atrocities

And Biden 🤦‍♀️ - they might replace him

It's so awful - so terribly polarised

I think it's a real possibility

I don't think a cognitively impaired POTUS is OK when he is Commander in Chief. There are some jobs which it's just not possible to delegate.

So you don't think that the POTUS takes advice from anyone else ? From the leaders of the armed services etc ? They are just sitting there googling 'codes for the biggly weapons' ?

Why would Biden receiving advice from anyone be reassuring? He's been advised to step down as democrat nominee but he's refused and no one can make him. The buck stops with him and if he's not fit to run again, he's not fit for office now. So who is running the executive branch of government?

You should look up what Commander in Chief means. Also Google "nuclear football" whilst you're at it.

Sounds like you're just fine with a cognitively impaired Biden because at least he's not Trump.

At least Biden would ASK someone. he follows rules and processes. Not just decide to hand them over to his mate Putin in a bathroom. I know who I would trust more with nuclear codes.

yeah ok …

He barely knows what day of the week it is nevermind what rules and processes are.

It's already going to pot in California... you can basically walk I to any shop and walk out with $900 worth of free stuff!

Why $900 exactly? Just curious, not planning anything 😂

Aussieland · 01/07/2024 23:21

Well aware what these mean and the processes of command involved.

And I think it is pretty clear while Biden is not quite as with it as he was, he is a clever man and is not quite ready for a nursing home yet 🙄
I am not sure people on here understand the difference between the confused behaviour of the 2 men (as trump is also clearly cognitively impaired) and why it might have different results.

I mean to be fair he doesn’t know about sharks and boats and electrics… but I’m ok with that

Oh the mumsnet Schrödinger's age…where being over 50 has you a doddering old dear not capable of anything at the same time 81 and clearly out of it is spry enough to run one of the most influential countries in the world 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

There are no checks and balances

Trump states he wants out of NATO - he is happy for Russian aggression. He thinks the only threat is China

He will get rid of all abortion, trample human rights into the gutter and make as much money for his family as he can in 5 years

Plus he will rig the courts for decades

And he has said he's going to have his enemies arrested

Literally NONE of that is democracy at work

I'm appalled anyone thinks the US actually acts in a democratic way

If he wins it will be horrific

Hmmm I’m not sure it will lead to civil war, as such.

I know many people have raised concerns ever since Trump’s first term that a civil war might be on the cards, and that has also crossed my mind at times, but I don’t feel we’re closer to a civil war at this point.

In fact, I think the news about Trump’s immunity will help to de-escalate things. I don’t agree at all that he should be immune, but I think the courts must have had good reason to make that decision, and I think it will help to calm some of his supporters.

I agree with you that there’s a very, very strong possibility he will become president in November, helped by Biden’s poor debate performance the other day (although I realise that lots of things can still happen and change between now and November!)

If Trump does become president in November, I agree with your predictions about what he’ll do. I’m not sure they will necessarily lead to civil war though. I think they will take time to put in place - so hopefully they won’t happen at all - but if they do, I think it will make the USA much more like Russia. That would put the USA in a terrible situation, and will probably threaten global stability even more than now, but I don’t think it will lead to civil war.

These are just my thoughts though, and I am in no way academically or professionally qualified to make a properly informed assessment of this - I’m very much just an interested observer/armchair analyst!

KillerTomato7 · 01/07/2024 23:27

You are unreasonable to think there will be a civil war like their first civil war involving front lines, massive conventional battles etc.

But you are not at all unreasonable to to think there will be something like the troubles in Northern Ireland, with chronic political violence and people attacking “soft targets” like cafes, public transit etc. but it would be on a far larger and more destructive scale than anything that happened then.

I thought Trump is 78- hardly a spring chicken, if you are going to argue about age. Why can’t the Americans find someone dynamic like Trudeau.

Are you British- funny take on the Northern Ireland situation. The troubles weren’t small!

Buttoneyed · 01/07/2024 23:37

I can’t understand why the only options are who they are. I would hate to live in America.

I can’t believe that Trump will likely be back. I don’t know enough about American politics and so I really thought he was gone. Dread to think what the country will be like under him again.

MariaLuna · 01/07/2024 23:38

Fact is, US can't afford a civil war if they want to be continuous as a world power.

Who would you rather have, US, or North Korea/Putin as a ruler over the world?

I do think it's a possibility though OP.

Scary times. And I'm talking as someone whose parents went through WW2. In Europe.

same shit, different day

"Not quite as with it as he was.."

That's quite the understatement.

Do people realise that his debate performance was as good as it gets? He would have been medicated to the eyeballs to get him on that stage.

The concern about Trump is fascinating.

The US is playing a role in 2 areas of conflict and 1 area of tension which could escalate. And November seems a long way away in that context.

Meanwhile.....

Joe Biden is clearly not fit to run the country so who is making presidential decisions?

Answer: nobody the American people elected.

You should start a new thread with that question. It is so much more important yet no one wants to discuss it. Why not?

Don't be ridiculous. That's how democracy works.

America cannot be a democratic country because it has a constitution.

Always annoys me when people don't understand this very basic fact of politics.

Gormenghastly · 02/07/2024 00:35

Most in the west are too soporific via internet and mass consumption to begin a civil war. Only if food was truly scarce would an authentic rising up take place. History pan out.

Most people are addicted to trends, consumption, property obsession and self serving interests to begin a revolution - and that never ended all that well, since most people who chair a revolution are political game players, too.

The US is it's own thing. Not sure I agree with many of the Trump enablers on this thread, one wonders if I have stumbled into the comments section of a shit tabloid, but hey ho.

Neither party have a good contender. They are stuck with that. There is a huge drive to wards regressive politics in general, and that's a whole new thread!

I agree that he is a worrying character, who would subvert democracy if he could.

But just because he threatens to do things (like arresting his political opponents) does not mean he will be able to. US presedents don't actually have that much autonomy.

He threatened Hillary Clinton with jail before his last term, if you remember. Most of his utterances are BS and his main priorities are making money and attention seeking.

ll09sm · 01/07/2024 19:46

OP, you seem incredibly naive. As though western ‘democracy’ is some sacred concept.

Democracies are bought and paid for lobbyists and interest groups.

Political corruption is rampant. Iraq, the financial crash, Covid to name just a few in the last few years.

Trump is not some outsider or villain or a hero, for that matter. He’s just part of the system, like all other western politicians.

Name one thing that Trump did that led to instability in the US. Or one thing that Biden has done that is any better. Outside of the usual culture wars.

Absolutely this..

USAParis2024 · 02/07/2024 01:04

Name changing for this.

Was at the White House today. This was the only protest I saw. And the family were stood in silence.

Thought it might be of interest.

i was fully expecting a protest about the court decision.

To think there's going to be a Civil War in America
CKL987 · 02/07/2024 01:06

DinnaeFashYersel · 01/07/2024 19:25

Exactly. It's a well established democracy with a robust justice system and checks and balances.

Actually the checks and balances aren't great. There was a lot of stuff done on Gentlemens agreements back in the day. They didn't expect such twats in power.

KillerTomato7 · 02/07/2024 01:34

Goldenbear · 01/07/2024 23:33

Are you British- funny take on the Northern Ireland situation. The troubles weren’t small!

The Troubles were relatively small, as civil wars go — about 3,000 killed and another 50k injured over about 35 years. They were big for a place the size of Northern Ireland.

A country the size of the United States, with a populace as well-armed as Americans are, could produce much bigger problems. And the spillover effects in terms of the global economy and political order would be incalculably larger.

Youneverevencallmebymyname · 02/07/2024 01:37

Maybe someone should have threatened the Clinton’s with jail. There is a very long list of reasons they should be investigated.

However, the current administration is very obviously using the justice department in an attempt to prevent Trump from running. The “37 felonies” are a joke.

I think the man is pretty odious, but prosecuting a political opponent is far worse for democracy than anything he’s done.

Youneverevencallmebymyname · 02/07/2024 01:41

With respect to the justice department being misused, they also ransacked Trump’s residences to find documents that were not returned and made hay over that. Sounds bad on his part, until you learn they’ve found endless classified documents in Biden’s garage from when when we was VP but that was overlooked.

I wonder when the American people will become tired of being treated like idiots by these hypocrites?
