The post person entered my house.

I've just seen it on my Ring doorbell.

17yr old DD had left the door unlocked for her friend so she didn't have to come down to let them in. Not uncommon.

Post arrived, including a parcel, during this time. When no one answered the door, the post person tried the handle, opened up the door and came into my home.

Granted, DD shouldn't have left the door unlocked, but it doesn't make what the post person did ok.

Just me who thinks it was completely unreasonable for them to have even tried the handle?!

We have a new Evri courier and I was just walking to the door to answer and she had opened the front door and was putting the parcel into the house. She didn't put her feet inside.

I was really shocked as it's never happened before. Door is usually locked though.

I guess you real issue is with your daughter who is leaving your home unsecured rather than a postie who was trying to do you a favour.

I totally agree. This wouldn't have happened had the door been locked in the first place.

That's really scary. Can you see from your doorbell how long he was in the house? Where did he leave the parcel?

It's not scary.

Clearly the guy opened the door, tucked the parcel a few feet inside, then closed it and went on his way, having done his job.

The OP doesn't want to say so, because it would make her ridiculous stance even more laughable.

fieldsofbutterflies · 30/06/2024 17:41

Yep, and if she forgets and the dogs escape, that would 100% be on her as the home owner.

I would hope that all home boarders would operate a double door/safety system anyway.

Edited

I imagine the postie would be more to blame, what with opening someone's door when they shouldn't.

MrOscar · 30/06/2024 17:49

You're over reacting, hugely.

Epicaricacy · 30/06/2024 17:49

Globules · 30/06/2024 17:16

Both are uninvited scenarios.

A no different to B.

You are being ridiculous.

A postman probably shouldn't open the front door, even if to drop a parcel because there's always the risk of facing a dog, letting the cat escape so it's not great.

Let's not pretend he trespassed and went to check your underwear drawer and help himself to the last slice of cake in the fridge.

MasterBeth · 30/06/2024 17:50

Ridiculous post.

Who keeps cake in the fridge?

FOJN · 30/06/2024 17:52

I'm always surprised when people are outraged about a postie dropping a parcel just inside the door rather than thinking thank god that wasn't someone more sinister.

I wouldn't like anyone just opening my door so I keep it locked at all times.

Ridiculous post.

Who keeps cake in the fridge?

DD and friend practically cleared the fridge, so the post person was lucky to get in there early 🤣

Well quite, how the hell does it last long enough for anyone to worry about keeping it fresh.

No, the responsibility lies with the person who is taking care of (and being paid for it) the animals.

Nope.

Legally speaking, a home boarder has a duty to ensure that dogs remain safe on their property - leaving an external door unlocked goes against that completely.

Youcantellalotofthingsabouttheflowers · 30/06/2024 17:58

Mine dies it and very glad for it I am too.

Abra1t · 30/06/2024 17:59

I would have no problem with the postie doing this.

IamMoodyBlue · 30/06/2024 17:59

Absolutely unacceptable!
Shouldn't ever try the door.
The postie has no idea why their knock was unanswered. Householder In the garden/bathroom/just walking out of the shower?
They have no idea if you have pets which would bolt out of the open door, or a dog that would take offence at a stranger reaching in. Poor dog then blamed for being aggressive.

If you have made a prior arrangement with a delivery person that leaving a parcel just inside the door is ok if their knock isn't answered, fine. Otherwise most definitely not.

AhBiscuits · 30/06/2024 18:00

Did he actually go inside your house or just put the parcel inside your house?

YouJustDoYou · 30/06/2024 18:03

Heah I had that once. Foreign guy just opened my door as I was walking by, stepped right in. Scared the absolute soul out of me, like, what the actual fuck.

damebarbaracartlandsbiggestfan · 30/06/2024 18:04

I think this is a big no no without prior agreement. Doesn't matter how helpful they thought they were being or whether or not a door is locked, they really shouldn't be trying the front or back door to a property. (I think a porch with the main, inner door visibly closed is more likely to be absolutely fine with the majority of people)
Imagine a scenario where someone has accidently left their front door unlocked and comes out of their downstairs shower wearing a too-small towel to find a postman grinning at them 😬
Or you have a puppy/kitten that shoots past the postman onto the busy road out front 😬

Americano75 · 30/06/2024 18:05

No, sorry I don't think this is OK. You don't enter anyone's house without being asked.

Everyone saying about animals bolting out - I have a dog who would 100% bolt out of the door, so I would never dream of leaving it unlocked just in case.

I would have thought that's just common sense?

Wishiwas24again · 30/06/2024 18:09

This happened to me but it was Amazon , I was in and would have answered the door but I obviously wasn’t fast enough so they decided to open my door and put the parcel inside , I had kittens ( real ones ) so was really cross that they could have escaped ! I don’t think that an unlocked door means they can open it especially if there are other safe place’s available, I complained ,in your shoes I would complain too , just to discourage a repeat , I don’t think you should have to keep locking your door just to prevent someone who doesn’t have your permission to open it

CosFuckThatGuy · 30/06/2024 18:11

Real kittens?! Wow!

What is happening 🤣
