The post person entered my house.

I've just seen it on my Ring doorbell.

17yr old DD had left the door unlocked for her friend so she didn't have to come down to let them in. Not uncommon.

Post arrived, including a parcel, during this time. When no one answered the door, the post person tried the handle, opened up the door and came into my home.

Granted, DD shouldn't have left the door unlocked, but it doesn't make what the post person did ok.

Just me who thinks it was completely unreasonable for them to have even tried the handle?!

@Globules , I agree they shouldn't enter a house , for their protection as well as your own .
I had the same with an Amazon driver who was very indignant when I asked what the hell he was doing in my house , he told me that the lady of the house had screamed at him to bring the parcel inside which was a lie . I keep my front door locked at all times now because I have 2 dogs and I'd hate them to injure a stranger walking in uninvited onto my home .

beckybarefoot · 30/06/2024 17:28

did they actually come right into the house, is there a porch? where did the parcel get left?

what kind of house it is? terrace? or do you have a garden gate and a path?

my hubby used to be a postie.. and they absolutely would never do this with prior arrangement?

interesting

fieldsofbutterflies · 30/06/2024 17:30

If the shed is the safe place then why would they even try the door handle.

Because it's easier to just pop a parcel in through the door you're already right next to?

DaughterNo2 · 30/06/2024 17:30

Globules · 30/06/2024 17:21

Like I've said, I don't see either scenario.as acceptable. Both are someone coming into my house uninvited after trying the handle to see if they could.

So basically they’ve opened the door, put the parcel inside and closed the door again. Hardly ‘been in your house’
Lesson to be learnt for your daughter

Blondiebeachbabe · 30/06/2024 17:32

This is NOT ON! I have multiple dogs in my house (I’m a home boarder), and if a postie opened my door some would escape. I always lock the door just in case.

I'm not going to complain, as a relative worked for RM for years. Hence being trained to use post person.

There is never a reason to try to open someone's front door unless you think a person inside is in desperate medical need imo. Doesn't matter if they walked in, dropped it in or made themselves lunch. They shouldn't invite themselves into my property without my prior permission.

Especially when the shed right next to them is set up as the safe place to leave parcels.

DD is aware that she can't leave the door open for her friend again. Which makes me really sad, but it's the outcome of yesterday.

Trained to use Post Person

My DH worked for RM until last year for 34 years and has never used post person.

Maybe they thought the front door was a porch door.
It’s really annoyed you so why aren’t you going to report it. They might have form for doing this.

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 30/06/2024 17:34

You’re sad because DD can’t leave the door open for her friend? 😂. Tell the lazy lump to haul her arse out of bed and open the door.

Then it wouldn’t have happened to you…

plimbow · 30/06/2024 17:35

I never knew you could open some street doors from the outside until I came on MN. Even our side gate needs a key.

You should be locking the doors as a home boarder anyway, surely, so this would never be an issue for you Confused

MounjaroUser · 30/06/2024 17:38

That's really scary. Can you see from your doorbell how long he was in the house? Where did he leave the parcel?

listsandbudgets · 30/06/2024 17:38

What did he do OP -

a) Open the door a bit - pop the parcel inside and close it again

b) Open the door walked in put parcel on side and left

c) Opened door, walked in, went through your drawers and cupboards and danced the cancan naked in your hallway for a few minutes?

A and B fine - C not so good.

I'd far rather the posty left it inside my house than I had to fiddle about collecting from a neighbour or getting the bus to the deliver office. Quite likely to get nicked if they leave it outside.

They did you a favour

You’d lock them anyway as a home boarder for the security of the dogs anyway wouldn’t you? Nothing to do with your postie.

Well yeah, you lock the door so people can't open the door and therefore the dogs are kept safe. So posties won't be opening your door. And if the OP doesn't want posties (or anyone else for that matter) opening her door she should also lock her door as you do.

AlisonDonut · 30/06/2024 17:39

Would it not just be easier to teach your family to open the door if it rings?

Daisylookslost · 30/06/2024 17:40

This reminds me of when a post person asked for water, while I got it he came into house and shut the front door. Then afterward drinking water he declared he would not leave until he had fed the dog a treat 🤔 so I got the said treat, handed to him and he fed the dog.
I did complain to powers that be and he then came round with some Elizabeth mints 😅
So imo you’re worrying over nothing.

People aren't perfect, there will undoubtedly be one time where she forgets and that shouldn't result in her dogs escaping because delivery people have inappropriate boundaries and try door handles thinking they're doing you a favour because it's been positively received by others.

Yep, and if she forgets and the dogs escape, that would 100% be on her as the home owner.

I would hope that all home boarders would operate a double door/safety system anyway.

Bellie710 · 30/06/2024 17:41

Our postie does this all the time and also signs for parcels if no one is there, not something I could get upset about and saves us a lot of hassle.
There is a massive difference between opening the door and dropping in a parcel to opening the door and walking round the house to put the parcel on the kitchen table!

I would assume anyone leaving their front door unlocked is not that concerned about people opening it.

tresales · 30/06/2024 17:43

@fieldsofbutterflies yes legally, but it's clear from the result of the poll that 1/3 of people are uncomfortable with this behaviour and it could be easily averted by delivery people staying out of people's homes :/

Spirallingdownwards · 30/06/2024 17:43

I guess you real issue is with your daughter who is leaving your home unsecured rather than a postie who was trying to do you a favour.

ZoeyBartlett · 30/06/2024 17:44

Lokshen · 30/06/2024 16:15

Ours always leaves the parcels inside and then closes the door again. Love it.

A third of Mnetters also don't open the door if someone knocks on it so that's the not the valid argument you thought it was.

Well, if I were OP, I would put up with a bit of discomfort and be bloody grateful that it was "just" the postman who came in, and not a burglar (or worse).

The easiest solution is a door that locks as soon as you close it behind you.
