The post person entered my house.

I've just seen it on my Ring doorbell.

17yr old DD had left the door unlocked for her friend so she didn't have to come down to let them in. Not uncommon.

Post arrived, including a parcel, during this time. When no one answered the door, the post person tried the handle, opened up the door and came into my home.

Granted, DD shouldn't have left the door unlocked, but it doesn't make what the post person did ok.

Just me who thinks it was completely unreasonable for them to have even tried the handle?!

I had this happen to me!
I was in my garden and my children were playing in the living room.
Delivery man knocked on the door and the dog started barking so I rushed indoors, just about to walk into my hallway and I see them open my front door, he took a step into my hall to put the parcel down and left. It was super quick but I felt it was a step too far, he could have just left it outside my door and I was shocked he’d even try and see my door was unlocked!

You were in the garden while your children were in the house. Why didn't you lock your door. You do usually get a message to let you know when it will be delivered.

JudyWinagain · 30/06/2024 23:30

What do you mean he came into your house? Did he open the door put the parcel in the hall and close the door? Or did he actually wander round?
If he just put it in the hall that’s fine.

You obviously feel invaded. But it’s a bit of an over reaction. It’s quite common, lots do this. (Presumably where they think there isn’t a security issue. I couldn’t risk leaving my door unlocked). Make sure you and your family lock the door in future.

The people telling OP that she's being dramatic and it's totally normal are the same people who clearly need further understanding of consent.
No, it's not ok. Just because the door is unlocked, the postman cannot let himself in.

I understand consent just fine.

A man touches my hand without my permission. That's lack of consent.
A man has sex with me without my permission. That's lack of consent. Would you call it exactly the same?

Because one is a worse breach of boundaries than the other.

OP's postie clearly did no more than deliver her parcel once they entered the house.

Normallynumb · 01/07/2024 00:04

I actually think that's good of the post person
Mine actually walks in and hands me my post if I'm sat down.. Obviously he knows I'm fine with that

"Normal" people...

So are young adults with crippling anxiety not "normal"?

Well, no. It would be very sad if that was normal/typical

I've explained this one repeatedly.

From my understanding of RM employees @Ifyouhavetoask99 & @worriedconfused 's posts, my thinking is in line with RM policy on this. They opened my front door uninvited. This appears to be a likely dismissal action for that employee.

Going on this response and the fact you have refused to answer multiple times

He clearly just opened the door, put the parcel there and closed the door again

Our postie opens the door and pops it inside.

DumbassHamsterSitterPerson · 01/07/2024 04:09

My postie would quite possibly get a shock if he opened my door as I'm often naked/semi naked when it's hot.

Luckily for both of us you can't open my door from outside without a key so it wouldn't happen!

mondaytosunday · 01/07/2024 04:22

My sister live in the US (in a major city) and the mailman does this all the time.

27Bumblebees · 01/07/2024 04:25

The drip feed is where you've gone wrong OP. The postie definitely should have followed your assigned drop off location, being your shed, and gone on their way.

They either didn't check the details, or ignored them, which isn't great. Then they let themselves in, how far no one knows, but that's also not great. But, what could have gone wrong? You weren't wandering around half naked as your dd was expecting a friend over. And I imagine they popped your post inside the doorway.

So unless they came in and stole belongings etc, i think yabu to get this angry about it. Maybe leave a note on the door to remind the post person that your shed is the spot to leave parcels.

Lizzy1980 · 01/07/2024 04:36

This has happened to us on a couple of occasions. Our front door looks like it could lead to a porch when in fact it’s just a small hallway and if the next door is open you can see right into the house. On the very rare occasions it’s happened to us the delivery driver has looked really shocked and apologised profusely. I suppose it depends how far into your house they came???

skyandocean · 01/07/2024 04:45

Get over yourself op!! The postman opened your door and left ur package safely. It was probably an oversight, as they usually open porch doors to leave packages, YES I KNOW U DONT HAVE A PORCH.
N let's be honest, shed at the front of the house, he probably thought its being thrown away,

You've made a post about a non issue.

Wishiwas24again · 30/06/2024 18:15

When my mum who is no longer with us was worried she’d say she was having kittens , sorry maybe it’s just me

Perfectly normal expression. Nothing wrong with your original "had kittens (real ones)" post or your metaphorical kittens follow up.

On the app and can't see who was picking you up on it but they were unnecessarily rude. Don't take any notice of the dickhead.

It seems it's enough of an issue for RM to fire people on 😉 I was unaware of that.

I don't understand what you mean by thinking something is being thrown away because my shed is outside my front door. 🤷 What is going to be thrown away?

My dn is a postman.
He had a parcel to deliver and opened the door to leave it in a porch thinking it would be safer.
The front door was slightly open. He didn’t touch the front door. A dog heard the porch door opening and rushed out and bit his hand.
He not only ended up in hospital on an antibiotic drip he also was disciplined and lucky not to lose his job.

Katemax82 · 01/07/2024 06:58

As a former postie I did this if somone had a front porch

That’s rather risky considering how many people are armed and can shoot trespassers in the US.

I can’t understand how so many people are ok about an uninvited person walking into their home (not porch).

willWillSmithsmith · 01/07/2024 07:55

childfreebychoice · 30/06/2024 21:20

I don't see the issue here at all. Delivery people often open the door and leave things in our porch if I'm on a Teams call and can't answer the door. I'm just pleased I don't have to go out and collect the parcel.

What’s a porch got to do with this thread? OP doesn’t have a porch.

Most postie does this, just leaves it in the hall. Much better than it getting wet or stolen. If you don't want people to open your door then lock it

NigelHarmansNewWife · 01/07/2024 11:06

DerekFaker · 30/06/2024 18:20

She's 17 ffs!

Do people seriously lock their doors during the day when they are at home??

So what if she's 17? We leave the front door unlocked if we're in, but it can't be opened from outside without a key.

The same principle would apply wherever my front door opened to - hallway/living room/wherever. If I'd left the door unlocked then I'd be pleased if the parcel had been delivered to just inside the door.

Shefliesonherownwings · 01/07/2024 12:29

The responses on here are nuts. How is it ok for anyone to try the handle of the front door, open it and then enter the house, whether that be a foot inside or just reaching a hand in to leave something on the floor. I would absolutely not be ok with someone trying my handle and opening my front door unless I agreed they could. I don't think for a second its the DDs fault, no one should be trying that handle full stop. I can't believe everyone is giving you such a hard time OP. Especially as the person clearly didn't read or notice your instructions about leaving parcels in the shed. I'm with you on this.
