The post person entered my house.

I've just seen it on my Ring doorbell.

17yr old DD had left the door unlocked for her friend so she didn't have to come down to let them in. Not uncommon.

Post arrived, including a parcel, during this time. When no one answered the door, the post person tried the handle, opened up the door and came into my home.

Granted, DD shouldn't have left the door unlocked, but it doesn't make what the post person did ok.

Just me who thinks it was completely unreasonable for them to have even tried the handle?!

But what if you have a house cat or puppy that escapes in that moment. It has happened to me.

Lock your door?

My dog (and one of my cats) can open doors.

diddl · 30/06/2024 20:06

Do people always know when parcels are going to be delivered so are waiting?

For me the point is that the postie had no need at all to try the door whether or not the Op was in.

HulaChick · 30/06/2024 20:09

My Mum's postman often brings tge post to her kitchen table when she's having breakfast! He's honest, reliable & a bloody good postman

I've explained this one repeatedly.

From my understanding of RM employees @Ifyouhavetoask99 & @worriedconfused 's posts, my thinking is in line with RM policy on this. They opened my front door uninvited. This appears to be a likely dismissal action for that employee.

They are just trying to earn a living. I know in the run up to Christmas they had to prioritise parcels. So our post was arriving weeks later. I don't think they have the time to be making another trip to your house when it can be left.

Sparkysmum · 30/06/2024 20:16

My door is open with a chain (cat comes and goes), and often the post or packages are chucked in. I am just glad that I get it all, though I do wish they would ring the bell to let me know the package has arrived. Lol

willWillSmithsmith · 30/06/2024 20:17

It’s normal for a postie to enter your actual house (judging by the number of posts saying meh, it’s normal round here). I’m shocked! Of course it’s not ok (unless specifically told they can).

Surely if that's the case you either keep the door locked or stick a note on the outside saying please don't open young puppy/cat may escape...

diddl · 30/06/2024 20:33

They are just trying to earn a living.

They don't need to open the door to do this.

Susuwatariandkodama · 30/06/2024 20:41

I had this happen to me!
I was in my garden and my children were playing in the living room.
Delivery man knocked on the door and the dog started barking so I rushed indoors, just about to walk into my hallway and I see them open my front door, he took a step into my hall to put the parcel down and left. It was super quick but I felt it was a step too far, he could have just left it outside my door and I was shocked he’d even try and see my door was unlocked!

Blondiebeachbabe · 30/06/2024 17:32

This is NOT ON! I have multiple dogs in my house (I’m a home boarder), and if a postie opened my door some would escape. I always lock the door just in case.

BUT YOU LOCK THE DOOR!!!! Moot point.

EmberAsh · 30/06/2024 20:46

The people telling OP that she's being dramatic and it's totally normal are the same people who clearly need further understanding of consent.
No, it's not ok. Just because the door is unlocked, the postman cannot let himself in.

Lancrelady80 · 30/06/2024 21:03

How does that work then in rural communities where its normal practice?

It's the same as "we don't prioritize parcels." That's the official line and they stick to it, even though knowing damn well that's exactly what's happening.

Managers know full well that rural posties will often save their customers a 20 minute drive to the local delivery office by popping parcels around the door. It works for them as it means that mail is delivered rather than being returned to the delivery office, where it then gets classified as "failed delivery" and pulls down their targets.

But the minute anyone complains about it, they will be shocked and disgusted at such gross misconduct and invasion of privacy, and the individual postie will be hauled over the coals.

Long story short - you wouldn't be telling the manager anything they don't know, just causing trouble for a postie trying to help you out.

What's a post person? We have a postman where I live. Sometimes the postman is female (xx chromosomes), but she seems okay being called a postman.

childfreebychoice · 30/06/2024 21:20

I don't see the issue here at all. Delivery people often open the door and leave things in our porch if I'm on a Teams call and can't answer the door. I'm just pleased I don't have to go out and collect the parcel.

If you don't want anyone opening your front door, lock it.
What if was a burglar chancing his luck? Do think they'd worry about consent?
What a stupid comment.

But the OP doesn't have a porch. He went inside her house.

What an absolute fuss about nothing. Trusted professional person does their job and ensures parcel is safe causing zero harm or inconvenience to anyone.

This sums it up beautifully

You're absolutely right. Most criminals don't ask for consent before committing a crime. It tends to go with the territory. Alongside murder and the like. But I would've thought a professional postman should ask consent before entering someone's home.

dawngreen · 30/06/2024 21:47

How do you all entice all these posties into your house lol. They hear my dog bark, and they run for the hills!

123dogdog · 30/06/2024 21:53

I wouldn’t be thrilled tbh, we have 2 house cats and a dog (1 cat + dog are sneaky wee bastards and will take an opportunity 😂) though to be fair I always lock the doors to the outside unless I’m going in and out at that point.

sometimes our living room window in open a bit (on restrictor so kitty’s don’t sneak out 😂) and I don’t mind if they put a package in that fits through the window 😂

what annoys me a bit though is if they take a parcel that is allowed to be left, back to the delivery office. We have a storage box round the side that has been there for 7 years or so. It’s my preference in the app, and various other delivery companies. Some of the posties leave it in there. Others badly hide them behind plant pots on the front step, others drop them over our gate (other side to where the storage box is).

at least Royal Mail are better than yodel who abandon stuff on the doorstep without ringing the bell, or knocking. Or the twits that put them in one of the wheelie bins 😂

Mnk711 · 30/06/2024 21:54

YABU. Our postie often opens the door and pops the mail in as sometimes that's easiest eg in the rain (for him and us). It may be that that is the rules but I think you're being melodramatic- often postmen 'break the rules' to help you.

DuckDuck1234 · 30/06/2024 22:10

You are being very, very unreasonable.
