The post person entered my house.

I've just seen it on my Ring doorbell.

17yr old DD had left the door unlocked for her friend so she didn't have to come down to let them in. Not uncommon.

Post arrived, including a parcel, during this time. When no one answered the door, the post person tried the handle, opened up the door and came into my home.

Granted, DD shouldn't have left the door unlocked, but it doesn't make what the post person did ok.

Just me who thinks it was completely unreasonable for them to have even tried the handle?!

Trying the handle (and there’s a ring camera), instant loss of job. I’m not sure i believe this sorry!

I work for RM, you’d be surprised… but you’re right, it would be GM and likely dismissal.

What is with people who see an open or unlocked door and think it's OK just to walk in?! A couple of years ago,I had my front door re-painted,so I had to leave it open for 4 hours for the top coat to dry. I live on the second floor of a block of flats,so I didn't see it as issue. I was sitting on my bed looking at my phone when I heard someone coming up the stairs. I assumed it was one of my neighbours. The next thing I knew a man's voice called out 'Hello?' . I went into the hallway to be greeted by a man I'd never seen before standing INSIDE my front door, and a woman standing behind him outside. They were JW. I said a few choice words to them about just walking in and said I hope you didn't touch the front door? They seemed rather put out! Bloody cheek.

No words really

theDudesmummy · 30/06/2024 18:52

I live in rural Ireland. The postie does this nearly every day. Both our front door and back door are hardly ever locked in the day time, whether we are here or not. When we are on holiday we do lock the doors but not the garage, so he puts everything in the garage. (I used to live in central London where obviously you could never do this, I so appreciate the different way of life!).

I'm not going to put someone out of a job. The footage is clear as to what they've done though.

On this basis, RM clearly think IANBU. That's enough for me.

You don't HAVE to open a door just because someone asks you to

Normal people look and see who’s at the door, and would open it if it’s the postman.

If a post person entered someone’s house; uninvited, and left a parcel.. it’s breaching all kinds of policies and would 1000% be investigated as gross misconduct.

Ive not read the whole thread so apologies if I’ve missed an update

How does that work then in rural communities where its normal practice?

Our farm doesn't even have a letter box - depending on which postie it is they either chuck it through the kitchen door or at this time of year when every door and window is left wide open they will come in and pop it on the table.

yes
bur bugger all proof i suspect beyond that scrap of red t shirt

and certainly nothing showing him inside the property as confirmed by the op

BobbyBiscuits · 30/06/2024 18:58

If they simply walked in and placed the parcel on the floor/table nearest door then that seems normal. Did they start walking round inside the house? If not they are just doing their job.
It's better to put it inside than leave out front for someone to pinch it.
Presuming they rung the bell and nobody answered, despite being in?
If you don't want them to open the door keep it locked.
I guess where I live front doors are always locked, regardless of who's in or out.

how is it clear?

You hear the click of the door

why don’t you post this video?

Tell daughter don’t be lazy and keep the door locked or be invaded by a post person

I suspect, given how often it happens, that in reality a postie is in no way going to get fired for simply putting a parcel inside someone's hallway. Maybe if they have the most jobsworthy prick of a boss, but nah.

As you say, in rural villages it's completely the norm, in my experience.

Wontletmeusemynormalname · 30/06/2024 19:00

It may be gross misconduct, however let's put another spin on it.

The op has fallen down the stairs, smashed her head and is unconscious. Or let's pretend it's someone elderly with no family, that one bit of "doing a good deed" could save a life.

But no in true MN fashion it's a violation (to the minority thankfully in this case)

This is why they take pictures surely.

In all my MN years I haven't read a post saying something has gone missing from the house and the only person could have been the postie. It's usually the cleaner.

Because you'd probably see his t-shirt disappear for about 3 seconds and watch him take a picture of said parcel 🤐

Mynaddmawr · 30/06/2024 19:06

Our postie does this all the time. I don't mind- would you rather have to go and collect your parcel from the sorting office? Its not like he popped in for a poo or riffled through your knicker drawer, who cares

Why would Op have to collect het parcel when she has informed them of a place where it can be left?

Because they theen have to write the note saying left in safe place. It's time, and time is money.

It's threads like this which are likely to be picked up by the press, then RM,evri, dpd will stipulate safe place only if no answer. That then puts pressure on the sorting offices/depots and they'll stop putting them in logical places like bins and over fences, which used to be a hot topic.

Fgs with the amount of cameras on people's houses or can see another house, it's not worth their job to steal.

Wentie · 30/06/2024 19:16

Another rural dweller where it’s normal. Unfortunately I have a massive and very territorial dog - our usual postman knows not to come in the house but a short term evri driver once opened the door and started striding down the hallway - then had 50kg of German shepherd charging at him.

diddl · 30/06/2024 19:17

I get that.

My point is that there was a designated place it could be left so there should be no need for it to go back to the depot had the door not be tried.

You could perhaps argue that the postie was wasting time by trying the door!

What an absolute fuss about nothing. Trusted professional person does their job and ensures parcel is safe causing zero harm or inconvenience to anyone.
